      Its educational for people to watch and learn construction techniques.
      Sometimes the biggest hurdle is the first attempt, people fear to make mistakes.
      If somebody is making a loudspeaker for the first time and they don't work 100% , rip em apart and tinker with the design.
      The finale cosmetic covering will hide the attempts and versions...

    A few things come to mind. 1. The Xmax of that speaker is likely not sufficient to handle the wavelength desired by such a port. 2. There will be all sorts of unusual resonant frequencies heard with this un-reinforced construction method: tubes, ports, cabinet. 3. The enclosure and the desired port tuning frequency do not appear to be well matched. 4. The port length and diameter do not appear to be well matched. 4. There are bound to be phase issues, here.

    I wonder what the theory is? Why do you need such a long duct? After all, we all know how the tube distorts any sound. If the emphasis is on amplifying low frequencies due to resonance in the pipe, then I would like to see a method for calculating the diameter of the pipe, its length and the number of elbows, which are highly undesirable in acoustics. Otherwise, there will be no amplification compared to a conventional phase inverter, but we will only get a distorted, colored sound that is very far from the sound engineer's idea.

    • @OronOfMontreal

      Similarly, I was wondering if you calculated the overall length of the ducts, to make sure that their output is perfectly in phase with the output of the woofer.

      I think after a certain amount of tube the gains are diminished. We use to build subwoofer boxes,use different diameter and length of pipe to tune the boxes.

    • @Michaelkaydee
      @Michaelkaydee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The size of box determined how many elbows he needed for the length of duct he wanted to produce his desired resonance...

  • @frankymino8773
    @frankymino8773 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    I believe you would need a crossover for the speaker to only drive the lower frequencies for it to actually be a dedicated subwoofer. Even then you still need a woofer (speaker) that is rated down to 20hz or at least down to 50hz for it to be classed as a subwoofer.

    I guess the theory is the PVC Tubes funnel the Bass, but the length distance the air travels causes a delay better Bass. In the 80's instead of baffles or tubes, I used two or four woofers in a car in 1982. Never made a box square but they had a few angles if not rounded backs so the bass does not just bounce against a flat area never sounded as good. Woofers that required a large box to perform correctly, I reverse the polarity some how worked great.

      Pulled the words right out of my mouth. Hoewever, simple sand will do. Finally, just using a long tube "waveforming" is not enough. The tube has to be tuned, if not, you get lower but smeared bass. Also, the ports need to be tapered, if not, it will also "chuff". Its easier to simply make a bass reflex enclosure, the bigger the box, the lower the bass. You can also add a passive radiator for additional extension.

    (I also would use a bit thicker cable, i am not sure about the power of this speaker, but it doesnt cost much)
    I also built speakers without any calculations when I was young, but propably its worth it.

    If you cut the MDF on a cnc machine, why do all the sanding and grinding? Why the last bend on the port? It only directs the opening chose to the front... Why not place the port openings on the front and not the back? Why make two ports and not just one? Did you do ANY calculations to the port and the length?
    I have NO suggesting as to what you should make next, but I would suggest anything else than a speaker enclosure!😝

    Have you never heard of pvc glue? Hot melt in not going to stand up to the vibration of a subwoofer. As far as shaping the porting of the speaker, it could have been achieved with wood panels that would have strengthened the cabinet and taken less time. And where is your baffling to stop those large panels from resonating? Sorry dude, but you have a lot to learn about speaker design.

      The bass is equivalent to that of a semi-open box in which the front sound waves stand out. Rear waves are attenuated by the ultra long ducts (acting as a very low pass filter), so not cancelling frontal ones. This is why most of the sound energy is delivered frontally and centered around the high bass (40 - 60 Hz), close to the natural resonance frequency of the speaker. In this frequency range the box behaves close to a big closed box. The ducts aimed at very deep bass (lower than 30Hz) have no main function in this system, neither the speaker is able to deliver it. All this is a waste of time and plumbing, in my view. And lack of knowledge of minimal speaker building principles either. I will not leave a like which is of course the main aim of this misleading video.

    It is far less expensive to simply buy two drivers, put them in an appropriately sized sealed box and equalize the bass response. You get a bass response that rolls off less than this design does below the port resonance and you get accurate bass with low group delay that a ported design can never have. Modern accurate hifi speaker designs don't use ports, open transmission lines or passive radiators.

    the downside of such a long bass pipe is that the sound out of the pipe is delayed in relation to the sound out of the bass speaker

    • @AmazonasBiotop
      @AmazonasBiotop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that is the downside with all pipes/ports. Everyone is used to that sound quality degradation when it is the norm when most of the speakers due to space constraints and the wish of having something small that should sound bigger..
      If we on the other side want no compromise and with sound quality. Then skip the ported enclosure go with open baffle and big driver!

  • @hksoundpro

    That's an enthusiastic build.
    The extremely long ports will create excessive planar drag. Group delay will be high.
    Get a copy of some good software and speak with someone who understands it. If you can model port velocity, mutual coupling, group delay & other easily overlooked parameters, your results will improve dramatically.

      There's a reason that deeply tuned sub boxes are big. The tuning on this is no doubt low, but at any volume, the ports will be noisy, and because of the multiple non-smooth curves, they won't be very effective... But hey, it looks cool.

  • @b.powell3480

    I hope you put some damping material around the tubing !!, it'll stop rattling and sonic vibration !, also the woofer is going to work into the enclosure before the sound wave exits through the labyrinth tubes ?, or are you going to add a compression chamber between the woofer and the beginning of the labyrinth tube? Good video, though

  • @lanedj801
    @lanedj801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I feel like you would want to separate the tube chamber from the speaker because the vibration would be on the outside of the tube and the inside therefore canceling out resonance.

    What is that subwoofer tuned to? I ask because it looks like quite long ports for a box that big, although in a small box you end up needing a really long port just to get a low tuning with adequate port area, which is why many use passive radiators. I've made boxes for 6 x 9 speakers and with 1.1 to 1.2 cubic feet each and 2 2.5" ports I think that were about 8 inches long, the tuning came out around 50 Hz which was low enough for a bass and mid woofer like a 6 x 9. I've also accidentally tuned a big PA speaker to 11 Hz when messing around with ports I had no idea of Helmholtz frequency calculations for (which means it wasn't providing significant boost in the useable range).

    • @jasonmelo1974
      @jasonmelo1974 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a port that long I assume it's tuned to 5 Hertz 🤣🤣🤣

    • @TimpBizkit
      @TimpBizkit 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jasonmelo1974 in this big a box, you don't need that long a port to get low, especially if it's not particularly wide.
      The "11 Hz" PA speaker was an H//H Pro 150. I added a piece of cardboard pallet wrap tube to the hole where the bullet tweeter was. Later I entered the paramaters in Hornresp, given the box was just over 100 litres (4 cubic feet). This enclosure will function as a large sealed box, although maybe in the single digits there might be some boost, although the displacement of this driver is likely not enough to take advantage of it. You'd get better SPL just tuning to 40 Hz.
      Edit: I just did the calculations for 4 cubic foot box with a 4" wide pipe 12" long and it comes to between 24 and 25 Hz in half space. Still too low though for the type of speaker I wanted, which was a party/PA speaker for maximum punch above 50 Hz. Quadrupling or maybe 5 or 6 x port area would have got me there.

    seems like its closer to a t-line concept than anything else. i was kicking around a similar idea but instead using 6 inch pvc pipe and fit a 6 inch sub in the end and run about 8 feet of the pipe. im pretty sure that if you have the ports firing the same direction as the sub yours will sound much better than it currently does. as it stands you have opposing waves cancelling each other out.
