    I think Matt is incredible with reading a horses movements and being insanely aware, but I will say this. Jesse has so much knowledge and advice just brimming in him, and it sounds like he wants to tell you. Not out of spite, not out of pettiness, out of just wanting to help. People get smarter and wiser learning from those who already have the skill and knowledge. Granted, Matt is still extremely smart and holding Chase very well, I just think it would be beneficial to take Jesse’s advice

    When I train a new jumpers over cavalettis, I will stride the poles out the same way I would do actual fences or a complete course design. This means I space one full canter stride between each pole which generally translates into to two full trotting strides. I like to do it this way because it prepares a green jumper for the stride count of an actual course with fences. Also, training with the cavalettisits is really nice because the poles are fairly easy to move, so you can adjust the distance between each pole to match your mount’s specific stride length. Obviously, in a true show jumping ring or cross-country course, nobody has the time nor the inclination to readjust the striding between fences to accommodate each individual horse, but for a horse like Chase who is inexperienced and therefore a little bit clunky over the poles (no shade, Chase, I promise…like I said, you’re still learning), it’s a great training tool!
    In my humble opinion, using cavalettis early on to teach a horse to become really in tune with his gait, so in his horsey way, he knows the relationship between gait and stride. The end goal is a horse who can intuitively adjust his stride count when going through any manner of course, with little to no influence from the rider. An inexperienced horse that learns to anticipate the number of strides between poles will, in turn, a home becomes comfortable and gain confidence as the poles get higher. A confident horse’s gait remains fluid and measured which inhibits the urge to hesitate. This probably goes without saying, but hesitation over cavalettis translates into refusals once a pole is replaced with a structure that has width, length, and girth like a fence. Again, it likely goes without saying that no show jumper, hunter jumper, three day event jumper, or any kind of jumper wants their pony to be comfortable with refusing and/or dodging fences. I can’t say enough about the importance of tons of training with poles and working on striding early on!
    You seem to be off to a great start! Keep up the good work! Also, apologies for yammering on…your video struck a chord with me and my training today!

  • @sirenserenades
    @sirenserenades 2 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    Chase is so good with correcting himself and finding a good stride in the middle of the "course" 😊 I got the feeling though that the distance was a little bit short once you put all the cavalettis up to max height. But it could've been the angle too

    He is improving a lot! He is *was* a dressage horse and he’s used to having a collected canter, but with ShowJumping I think for your approach to the jump I would have more of a forward canter. 😁😁
    I love how Jessie said “the blue one is heavy”. You, “I’ll take the yellow one!”😂😂

    • @emhoj97
      @emhoj97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes agreed, Chase is doing so well for being trained for dressage! He does need to be driven more forward, he's too dressage-collected so when he extends for the jump his striding gets messed up. It's also for Matt to be more confident and ask more of Chase, letting go of the dressage instincts for a bit. My instructor is always driving at me to speed up, ask more, be more active 😂

    • @larinvermont3271
      @larinvermont3271 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bettysback6560While I agree with you, I also have to defend Matt on that one. Chase is a very tall Thoroughbred, with a corresponding long stride. Plus, Chase can be VERY excitable, and he kept trying to speed up during the whole exercise, which at the most is meant for a very controlled canter. I was a flyer, and competed in both arena and open hunt (now called Cross Country) jumping events. Chase was continually trying to accelerate, and Matt was trying to calm him and slow him down. I would have done nothing different when I was training my hunter/arena jumpers.
      Plus, I give Matt a lot of credit for clearly stepping outside his comfort zone! When you start out the video with Matt's comment to Chase something to the effect, "You're not going to kill Dad now," you know he's not in his own zone. You didn't say if you jumped, but my trainers always told me that flyers were always a very different breed of rider (actually, I remember being told I was slightly 'touched' - I am) - and we'll see if Matt completes the evolution. With both an inexperienced rider and an untrained horse, this may be a task; I'm glad Matt is going to have help from what sounds to be a professional trainer 🏇🙏

      I agree that chase did as amazing as he could throughout the exercise. One thing I noticed a bit was he seemed to flatten out a bit in the middle and through the last few jumps. This is probably just a strength thing he needs to work on, but focusing on helping him stay more rounded throughout the entire exercise would benefit a larger horse like chase. Otherwise, he did so well adjusting to what you were asking of him.

    There are many ways to teach a big horse to pick up his feet, so don’t stress about that-enjoy the process of him learning-and he is a SMART horse-he’s picking things up fast and that’s what you want to see!

    There's nothing wrong with Chase as a jumper. He looks well built for it, he has good rhythm, and he doesn't look heavy at all, he actually figures out his feet really well after getting messed up at first. Dont expect that much when they are learning, he hasn't done it, so he's just not going to get it done like an experienced jumper. There's nothing to it other than that, he just has to learn. And remember you're not an experienced jumper, so you aren't going to help him as much, so he might look worse for you, but that's totally fine. Try not to take every mistake they make as a big indicator of their potential or not.

The only reason I say that is watching Chase's rear foot knocking over the same poll in both attempts. I'm a barefoot rider, and I think you should never nail iron on a horses feet. Their hooves flex, and pump blood to their feet and legs. It has been proven when you stock the hooves ability to flex, their feet go numb. Most of the Mounties in Texas quit showing their horses, and have had no lameness from doing so. After a short time, their feet are like concrete. We have a mustang mare who is now 25 years old. Never a nipper or shoe has ever touched her feet. They always look like the farrier just trimmed them. Shoes on a horse is the main reason for lameness. Have you ever watched after your horse has been barefoot for awhile, and you put shoes on them, they will stomp their feet. It's because they can't feel them. Their feet go to sleep, just like when you sit on your foot for awhile.
    Love your videos, and that's the only criticism I have.

    Awesome job, Chase got his left lead. You and Jesse make a great team. You made my day about Chase being goofy and heavy. My OTTB gelding is just 5 and lazy but explosive. I have the Equilab app but haven't used it. Now my goal starting today. Thank you 😊

    Matt it may be raining and dreary in the Netherlands but you and Jesse are like rays of sunshine 🌞. Love seeing Chase and you and Jesse are so funny. I was laughing so much at you taking out your frustration with the hammer.

    This was a fun video! Also I do love the app he’s talking about. It has so many great features it really helps you to see your progress. My only difficulty I had was riding in metal roofed indoor arenas. If you don’t have WiFi it won’t track you well. Other than that I love it!

    Part of him not picking his feet up is because you have to wake him up a bit, he’s cantering to the jumps like he’s a bit asleep, keep that excitement he had at the start of the video and he’s such a big horse he needs that power in his canter going into jumps

    Great video and congrats for that success.
    But for me it feels like you have to let him go on these poles, don't stop him so much cause he goes reeeealy slow. Good luck with this💖

    Good that Matt have decided to get more help, sure Jesse could probably help more if Matt just listened to him but yeah sometimes personal dynamics makes it hard to have friends or family be the teacher and it's just better to have an other trainer then.
    Yes Chase is a dressage horse but he figured it out really well anyway and I'm sure he's gonna get better at lifting his feet with a bit more training. Most importantlyis that he enjoysit and gets exited.
    The riding schoole where I ride had a 20+ year old mare that only had been ridden in dressage before being sold to a riding school (really to advanced for a riding school, but she had a some minor injuries and couldn't train at a high level anymore) well they started her really low and she was not lifting her feet and just stumbling over even slightly raised poles in the beginning, but after some months something just clicked and she became a pretty good jumping horse and was even in some local competitions.

    I found it helpful to jump over hay bales, one and then two stacked. It is something they know, and it is kindly if they clip it. Also the solidity gives them a good ground line. 🇦🇺

    (Oh Matt please be careful.) An accident waiting to happen I think, I don't like how the poles are permanently attached to the caveletti or how you suggested stacking them to make them higher. Even at a low height, if Chase clips one, it won't collapse or separate it will go with him, & I'm sure the clatter of the aluminium will frighten him, & if he runs out from the jumps he could get caught up in the caveletti.damage his foot/leg/worse. The old wood or plastic X ones are a more sensible caveletti. At least the pole will be knocked off if Chase clipps it.
