    It’s like he picks his legs up and levitates over the jumps. Very cute.

    This kind of confirms my thoughts about Emporio's back end. He's still seems weak and tight in the back. The polls do help elongate his back stride which helps match his front.

      I think they needed to put more space in between the polls to help emporio to elongate his back and push with his hind legs more. You can kind of tell that he doesn’t push as much with his hind legs as he does with his front when he was just trotting but it was made more obvious when they went to the poles. They should definitely do more trot poles to help emporio push more. I use trot poles as a way to check if my horse is actually pushing or just faking the connection and it makes such a difference.

    Can we just appreciate how much trust has been built in this relationship? That horse is like “if you say so” and trusts that Matt will keep him safe. I love this relationship, I love that rider too. He’s a fancy TH-camr and he still has skill, heart, and care.

    Initially, he was just adjusting his trotting stride to go over the jump the same as over the bars on the ground! He thought that was the game until you raise the jump! He's a very thoughtful jumper trying to figure out ' the game' you presented.

    It doesn't look too bad! He's a stunning dressage horse with a funky jump but he does his best! Also I think pole work is great for any horse, it's a nice exercise that trains the horse's mind and attention too, they have to figure out their legs.

    I’ve taught many horses to jump and most were off the track tb. Most did the strangest things at first. A few got it quickly. You “ cannot” say he’s not a jumper based on his first session. I thought he was very willing and just did not really know what to do with his legs at times. Free jumping in a jumping lane helps a lot to let them figure it out on their own. If you had to keep him going and put up gymnastics etc he will soon start to work it out. Would be interesting to see. While he might not be a top show jumpers most horses can get over 3 foot 6”.

      I have also taught lots of ott thoroughbreds to jump and they are awesome. I prefer a thoroughbred.
      I also work for an online suicide chat. Guy was very doom and gloom. Then suddenly after an hour he says he is like an injured racehorse and had no future. I jumped all over that! Told him injured racehorses make great show horses. Suddenly he wanted to be a show horse and felt hopeful! ❤️

    He’s so used to working uphill on the bit that he didn’t get it at first. It was fun to see his ah-ha moment. There’s always a freedom on the other side of the jump and he seemed to discover that too. And yet he was a good boy and didn’t get wild and break on the other side. I had a horse who would always do a little woopdi-doo buck on the first jump because his feet where up in the air, his head a little down, and isn’t that fun wee?!

    He’s a natural! Having taught horses how to jump, the bigger the horse, the more you need to make something visually imposing for them to want to make the effort. When he trotted over it, I was like ‘perfect!’ Because he’s not afraid and he’s getting his confidence. But every time you said he wasn’t using his back, I had a giggle because I was like ‘at his size, he won’t use his back until 3ft’ :D What a clever horse!! I’ve had my big horses go over small logs-since they are more solid looking they give a better jump, but not until they have mastered jumps that fall down. Was fun to watch! Thank you :)

  • @belindastergaard5012

    Actually, you should always train your horse with ground poles, also as a dressage horse, and rider. So, its pretty weird to see, that he never tried that before...

    • @belindastergaard5012
      @belindastergaard5012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      @• Equestrian Edits • It has nothing to do with it - it is good for ALL horses to do pole work. they think a lot more, and use some completely different muscles. Otherwise, many horses get tired of walking in a dressage square all their lives. Just as forest walks should be done often
      Jumpers should also have like 3-4 days a week dressage only, as well as a dressage horse need some fun sometimes, and some pole work.

    • @belindastergaard5012
      @belindastergaard5012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @• Equestrian Edits • Nope, a jumper would you ruin completely if you jumping more than 4 times a week, i would say less. believe it or don't, a jumper NEED dressage, to control and relaxation in the jumping arena..

    @suzannehedderly1331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    In my (limited) experience horses are trained to jump, not just set over a fence the first time. So I think it's not fair to judge his jumping on his first time. He's so tall he went over the first jumps more like a cavaletti. Once it was higher he had to put some effort in. I think he did well. 🙂

      Some are naturals tho! We have a 3 yr old that just escapes the arena sometime by jumping over the side. Which is 1m60 ish. We haven’t taught him anything about jumping proper yet.

    • @LE123LE123
      @LE123LE123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what Matt is doing here. Introducing his horse to jumps. Most dressage horses of this caliber don’t work too much over fences, but it is nice for them if they like it. This is the proper way to start--poles and low jumps. It’s just that Emporio is very big, and little jumps are likely just too small for him to bother trying. But bigger fences are risky if he doesn’t know where to put his feet since it’s new to him, so it’s a process. Some horses over jump the little things, some under jump. Trained both and there’s no set way to respond. It’s just up to each horse.

That is so counter-intuitive. They need to try new things, they need to step away from the dressage ring and let their mane down...so to speak. And it's super cardio exercise!! I was blown away by his eagerness, he is game for anything. He doesn't need to be a GP champion, as long as he's having fun and super cool about new things. I would love to see you try him over a nice little gymnastics when he has some experience, they are such a great teaching tool and with the distances a bit tight, he'll learn to sit back and snap up his knees up! But honestly, you should be sooooo proud of your gorgeous super star!! He's all neck which we LOVE!!! Congrats!!

Hard work it is, right? Going from dressage to jumping and back again but I think it really helps open the horse up and give them something fun and new to focus upon. Good for you!.

    I think you should try this more often! He looked so happy when he got the hang of it and maybe you'll never be able to jump super high but it's a nice distraction from the dressage work and helps build balance

    My horse does jumping mostly, and I bought and rode in a dressage saddle for a bit. It was different for sure. He is built downhill so he feels very even in a jump saddle. I felt like I was going to go off the front in a dressage saddle!

    This is a great video for those who believe horses dont like jumping.
    His attitude was all try, and he seemed pleased with the exercise
    during the last jumps. Love how you laugh and praise him.

    I was watching another video on youtube of a middle aged english woman teaching her horses how to jump. She started with lunging the horse over the trotting poles, then increased it with some smaller jumps in both directions and then actually jumped her horse over the jumps and increased height over the year. I believe she did it this way to prevent injury to the rider and horse. I'm sure you would never hurt your horse but I thought id pass along this idea :) Beautiful horse!!

    This is something my trainer did with us ALOT. She refused to just let us stick to one thing because learning new things keeps the horses mentally engaged. If they have to mentally work to learn new tasks, they stay interested and listen better, they also show improvement in other areas... especially when it comes to handling new things they come across at other arenas/stables.

    We have the same taste in so many things you and Jesse agree on..ps:my dad's name was Jesse and so finding you too was like coming home in my mind..love you both.❤

    Had one of best instructors in US south. She was mostly dressage and eventing BUT ground work with poles was crucial. I spent lots and lots of time doing ground work. Whether you are into dressage or jumping the basic moves are like doing scales on piano or figure work in figureskating. I like eventing more than show jumping - in my opinion it attracts more horsemen than any other types. Besides it is more diverse - your horse and yourself have to be proficient in dressage, stadium jumping, cross country. Cavelletti - small series of jumps does wonders for timing and getting the horse engaged. Never had a push button horse. Spent months perfecting walk and stop. Boring but crucial. Lol used to get me 8 and 9s in scoring. Also helped me to become more balanced. There is no quick fix to perfection on way to Gran Prix or even doing decent second or third level test.. Anyone who thinks a horse will get them to Gran Prix without basics - in my opinion put the gold cart before the horse.

    "There is a first time for everything" (Matt to Jesse - April 2021). It's so true! Emporio is a big cute boy who always does his best to please you. In the beginning he doesn't jump at all but at the end, when the fence is higher, he does well. Good job Emporio! Love you 😍💙💙

    Matt, ❤️ This was fun to watch and then not quite as fun…..So I want to say that:
    You can give him the benefit of the athletic and wise horse he is And who is also green to jumping with a rider…and so therefore he would need to stretch his neck out and look at the space between the trot rails to keep his back up and maintain his usual good suspension in order to articulate his four quarters evenly and then to find his own stride for balance as he approaches the Jump…(and to be fair, with a ground rail for reference )…..
    Then and you can also let him have his head completely as he readies his body to take off over the jump and let him have the snaffle ( that’s why its there for this exercise…right? )….so as he gathers his legs he can round his back and so he still has his neck and head articulating harmoniously with his whole spine as he flies over and also as he’s ready to land…with the freedom to bring with haunches and his hind legs up and under himself for the safe landing and to enable him to get his front feet out of the ground and ahead of those hinds which now land and carry his momentum forward safely.
    This horse could, as the natural athlete he is…have figured this all out if he’d been loose or with you riding but on a giving rein contact just to keep him straight ( if he had needed it…which he really didn’t ) and also with you reaching forward and letting him stretch his neck for balance as he left the ground and sailed over to collect his hinds for the nimble landing and while elevating his forehand for a safe follow through with no injuries…..instead he hollowed his back and threw his head up to keep in anticipation of smacking a rail or…??? or a front leg with a hind hoof with all the concussion that comes from the absence of his normal great suspension and ease of elevation.
    Try free jumping him slowly in an easy track along the arena fence and you’ll have your test of whether or not he can jump. 😇 He can, of course.😍
    He’s a natural athlete and so are you plus you’re a talented rider and you have a feel for horses and especially this one. Your training and practice has made it possible for you to ride with any length of stirrups and you can adjust your position easily so with a mane hold with little rein contact you two could jump in a controlled space for simplicity and confidence building and you wouldn’t even be surprised because you know you’re a pair 💕and…..that…
    You Got This……and anything else you try…..So use a coach next time for safety and soundness and have fun with your horse who can “fly without wings” as the Arabs were quoted saying was why Allah made the horse. 🎆🌅😇❤️💚💜

    I've noticed consistently that front right ankle rolls up flailing outward before landing as the left tends to extend flat.
    It was there even during the purchase video.
    The left seems to be building strength and not collapsing..
    That's usually a tendon moment.
    Have they ever said anything about the right?
    Thanks for sharing..Incredible boy.
