Uuuuh, yes, the German Flak was used as anti infantry, and even anti tank/ anti vehicle extensively during the whole war, it was one of the most feared weapons to run into when attacking because it's ammunition fuses could be set to explode mid air at whatever distance, so the shells could be fired at infantry, just above the ground and they would explode mid air, turning anyone in the vicinity into mincemeat. Towards the first half of the war they were used successfully as anti-armour as well, until the allies got wise and thickened their armour.

Quick facts about Battle for Berlin:
Battle for Berlin was a part of Berlin strategic offensive, conducted from 16 April to 2nd May 1945.
    Forces for entire strategic offensive:
Red army + polish forces of Armija Ljudova - 2.35 mil men
    Wehrmacht + volksturm ~835 000 - 900 000
In battle of Berlin directly participated:
    Red army + polish units - 464 000+
    Wehrmacht, SS, Volksturm - 100 000 -200 000
Casualties suffered, non-recoverable for entire strategic operation from 16 April to 8th May
Red army and polish units - 84 000+ KIA
    Wehrmacht, SS, volksturm - from 100 000 to 400 000 (highest estimate) KIA, around 380 000 POWs.
Correct number of casualties for Germans is impossible to count for several reasons:
    1) no statistic documents for losses of volksturm, police, SS volunteers, other hastily formed civilian militia units
    2) most of the unit journals and documents were destroyed, captured by the Soviets
    3) in overall chaos casualty list were not kept
Biggest loss of life for the Soviets during strategic offensive - Battle of Seelow heights, between 20 000-27 000 KIA
Biggest loss of life for the Germans during strategic offensive - Halbe pocket or “Halbe massacre” - around 90 000 KIA + POW

Thanks for this animation. I visited Berlin several years ago and as I’m a fan of military history, when I visited the Reichstag Building I tried to see where fighting took place and using Wikipedia, I compared it to what I could see there. I walked this in chronological order. What blew my mind was this area is actually quite small in real life and how it took the Soviets days to get from the Moltkebrucke bridge to the Reichstag building, it looks just a few hundred metres in length and now takes seconds to walk the Soviets advance from the bridge.

I cant imagine how terrifying it must of been to be one of those Soviet troops storming the Reichstag.
Fighting in very close quarters with weapons more suited to open terrain, In the dark, not knowing your way around, with a highly trained opponent armed to the teeth with no wishes of surrendering. I mean that MG42 position at the top of the stairs was savage.
Not only all that, you're under pressure from your own commanders to get things done as quickly as possible. Not a great position to find yourself in.

A fun fact: if you can find an unedited version of the picture of the flag going up, you'll notice the man raising it has 4 or 5 watches on his arm. Watches were considered fair game as war loot at the time.

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Supposedly multiple watches were worn in case one broke you'd know one had stopped as the clock faces wouldn't match and soviet watches were not exactly that reliable. I saw that picture you can only see 2 watches on his wrist though later versions they crudely airbrushed out one of the watches.
Apparently the explanation of "soviet watches are unreliable" was a worse excuse than soviet soldiers looting watches. But soviets really depended on wristwatches due to the lack of radios the use of artillery depended on runners coming to tell of the exact time of a bombardment and you didn't want to mis-time it.

Can someone explain why it's supposedly wrong? I doubt these items would ever be returned to their families anyway.
But no, you are spreading misinformation, there were only two watches - one on each arm.

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@helgenlane Ehh, its something in the geneva convention about how "personal items" like rings, books, pendants, etc cannot be taken off either prisoners nor dead and by some VERY broad interpretation a wrist watch may be a personal item.
However its far far more likely wrist watches would be of practical use for war due to vital importance of precise timing of operations. Those items can be confiscated and used as they see fit, including wearing several watches so if one watch stops or goes slow you know which one is wrong and go by the other 2.
Not all "military issue" items are confiscated, explicitly POWs must be allowed to keep and continue wearing their uniform to distinguish them from "convicted criminals".
Its a sign of Soviet paranoia that they couldn't just explain that wearing several wrist watches was normal, they HAD to censor it and trying to hide it made it seem bad.

These are not my topdown figures this time, no need to mention me as an author of them.
Also, the lack of russian sources is highly noticeable in this research. By 1945, soviet infantry was probably the most experienced and well-equipped amongst the other warring nations and they knew how to assault such buildings better than anyone else on this planet. There were no such zerg rushes like in this video - the whole square with Reichstag itself was heavilly bombarded by all sorts of artillery and tanks before the assault, and each window of reichstag had at least one soviet machine gun or a couple or rifles watching over it. The majority of soviet casualties were inflicted inside the building - soldiers used grenades and TNT to flush out the germans in intense CQB. They even used burning petrol to flush out the germans out of the basements.
Again, these infantrymen endured Stalingrad and plethora of German "festungs" assaults. There were no human waves of any kind - Red Army divisions took heavy casualties during the whole war, and some rifle divisions had 5 thousand men under them. Men shortages were huge, even artillerymen were often sent on the front to fulfill infantryman duties. The shortage of men was compensated by impressive combat experience and overall firepower of the division. There were no huge waves or "red tides" assaulting the Reichstag, the building was taken by small, experienced and well-organised assault groups.
Also, some people here stating that it was pointless to assault this building and it wasn't worth it. Well, it's an urban warfare. Germans made a strongpoint out of this building and you can't ignore it. They even have some tanks in vicinity.
In other words, whenever you like this political regime or not, 1945 Red Army was the world`s finest military. You can't expect these men to do such stupid stereotypical frontal assaults with casualties they couldn't afford at the time. Learn russian sources for a change.
