And as Mark said at the end of the video, today you can still see some damage in the building from the fighting that occurred during the battle for the Reichstag. If possible I recommend everyone to go and see the Reichstag for yourself! It truly is a remarkable building.

House of History , That is a very good and relevant observation . Any combatants at this point and this place would have to be shell shocked beyond comprehension. . It amazes me that for the most part there were more non Germans than Germans making this hopeless stand . Many Waffen SS units that were Frenchmen , Norwegian, Danes etc knew that they probably would not make it . I cannot imagine that ANY ideology would be so strong , it boggles the mind these were people of modern Western Civilization yet they were willing to kill and die for one man . The fanatical SS swore a loyalty not to the Father land but Adolf Hitler. These are conversations that are no longer made , it is good we can have one here !

@@oceanhome2023 The vast majority of the European Waffen-SS men were fighting to repel Bolshevism and communism, not fighting "for one man." The Waffen-SS was seen as the first truly pan-European elite fighting force that united all peoples of Europe, not as some wacky Hitler-obsessed group of goose-steppers. Sure, their oath was to Hitler and the German military under his command, but as Dr. Robert Citino would say, "there's an oath, and there's an oath."

This was utterly fascinating to see, my mum is 94 and was in the WRAF and this just adds to all the history and really brings that era to life! Thank you so much! I am going to watch it again! Just watched it and to see it almost now, is such a transformation from what it had become back then! Wow!!

WOW great work. My in laws were kids during the fall of Berlin and this was such a stark reminder of what they lived through. They (understandably) don't talk about the war and the suffering but mention of steeling potato peeling from compost heaps to make soup indicate the suffering of the Germans people at the time. Here in the UK my family did not fight as they were coal miners and at the time the war industry ran on coal.
Keep up the great work :)

Just a point Mark. As an Englishman, please say " Guard of Honour " NOT the American "Honor Guard". I love your series. They all bring out facts which most people, despite knowing their war history, are enlightened. The one on Goering's yacht is a good example.

To be a good soldier, one must love the army. To be a good commander one must send what he loves the most to it's death and do it willingly. We accept the empty chair at the table, we just don't want to get them all killed.
