So, worse than ANY WAR. Paper laid flat weighs a TON. VW suspension is rated for 2200lbs. Take out the front passenger-seat & stack telephone books to the ceiling.

Started my Postal career driving those 1/4 ton right hand drive jeeps! Was never so glad as the day they replaced them with the LLV’s! No power steering or brakes and little to no heat shielding made these a beast in the summer. You would burn your hand if you placed it on the floor and during the winter the heater/defroster was of little use. They were maneuverable but that was about it. Thanks for sparking a few memories!

You ain't lived until you've driven an old 4x4 with half a turn of slack in the steering box at speed! I still think he could have fitted a BMW straight 6 turbo diesel under the hood. (Get one from an E36, it's got a tractor fuel injector, so no confuser or angry pixie wrangling required).

The sheet metal actually prevents you from dying in a diesely fireball. In the event of a rollover, the sheet metal slits your throat before the fire could even have a chance.
I had a VW diesel of that era. Standard procedure for any standing start was to put the accelerator to the floor and wait until it was time to shift, put it in second and floor it again. Then again, it had enough torque that a standing start in second was no big deal. I taught my daughter to drive in a tdi, it was nice that she could learn clutch control without having to coordinate it with the accelerator -- enough torque that it would easily start moving at idle.
A surprisingly smooth ride. A bit like atmospheric re-entry.

My first Jeep was an '86 Scrambler CJ-8. Went anywhere I wanted, hauled anything I needed. I really miss that Jeep!
