Hello everyone, welcome to the first of the Dev Diary & Stream overviews for Ways of War! If you'd like to jump right in to Luis' Dev Diary, the Oathsworn details begin at 1:10; if you'd like to jump in to the very long stream breakdown, the screenshot parade begins at 16:51. The devs cooked with the Tiger Patch accompanying the DLC, and the main dish is the overhaul to the Hero Skill Trees, which you can find at 35:02 and 56:42. I'm incredibly pleased with what I've seen so far but I do have a slight concern over the ever-escalating power creep, perhaps that's simply inevitable? Feel free to let me know what you think, and I'll see you next week -- thanks for watching!
Nice, I think you got most of the details from the stream. On the Discord the devs mentioned they didn't have enough time to revisit feudal. So for now the feudal lord skills are removed and feudal just grants -20% army upkeep.
I really need to pay attention to the Discord, but thanks for letting me know! I hope Feudal gets the next rework treatment because I love my Feudal Lords. 😊
New hero skill tree based on specialization, hero ambitions and removal of sliders in character creation all are great additions that will be available to everyone.
@@Star_dragon8 if by friendship you mean repeatedly loading a save so that you can have a princess Celestia themed no casualty challenge run then yes. The magic of friendship and save files .oh and may that meme builds be with you.
I thought the game is pretty much dead, but this is a very welcome surprise. I hope they will break the PDX bad streak and will continue this game for years.
R.I.P. to all of the hero mods, you will be missed. Thanks for the coverage, Fabe, I missed a lot of stuff even though I watched the dev stream. One thing to add - it looks like this new "give your unit a extra turn" ability is a replacer for Spur to Action. Which is good imo, 'cause Spur is almost a must pick, it's so powerful. Also, hey, no more summoning on all of the heroes.
Yeah, I'm expecting most of the mods I use to be broken but fingers crossed! The Hero changes almost make me more excited than the actual DLC, and I'm incredibly curious to see a Ritualist skill tree. Every Hero having summons or mandatory support stuff was boring, but I still want to be able to create the ultimate support.
Agreed. Specialization adds uniqueness to gameplay. I always went for specific hero upgrades, and they all eventually became the exact same. Essentially the "when everyone is super" meme. I am super excited for the hero rework.
I was thinking of NOT buying the season pass and just buying them as they release. However, AFTER listening to your video and seeing all the changes that the dev's have been working on, I am more convinced that they deserve my money upfront. They have earned my confidence about their willingness to continue to make a GREAT game even GREATER. Thank you for your review,
The update is cracked, holy hell, I love everything about it. Down with the same heroes every game! It was mind-numbingly dull to always pick summons and support tree after playing for hundreds of hours. Oni and the Asian-inspired culture and mythology are like custom-made for me, hope that we get to make a dragon ruler an eastern wingless type.
Unfortunately, they weren't able to change the body type of the Dragons. The Dragon Lords are getting two new Eastern-styled heads, their own special skill tree (where Mortal Champion is from the stream), and are getting revamps to their claw/breath weapons.
It's funny that the free update has kind of overshadowed the actual expansion. Good on the devs for doing something so dramatic without charging extra for it.
Skirmishers got buffed, rally the dragoons! I can now shoot someone in the face and run away without getting stabbed in the back! Rangers with the sword and magelock leading a full stack of dragoons are going to be a glorious nightmare.
calamity dragon target one village or city: city is reduced to rubble and land is turned into desolate. I think it has to be a city YOU OWN, soo spicy.
@@chrispaul7595 As far as I can find, none of the Transformations or Tomes benefit from Desolate terrain, but the Desolate Adaptation Society trait and the Primal Ash Sabertooth Culture can benefit from Desolate (Ashland) terrain. I wonder if I can squeeze that in to something. 🤔 I suppose it's also worth mentioning that Restore the Land from the Tome of Fertility is specifically designed to terraform Desolate terrain, so it would be possible to go for some yin-yang/natural cycle roleplay.
39:33 Yeah I just want to point out that a whole army moving a hexagon formation with means that a ranged unit in the center of the formation will *always* crit before any unit buffs which seems kind of insane And now that I've thought this through you can also leave one side of the Hexagon 'open' and let a melee unit in the middle of the formation do the same thing.
Hmm, that's a good question! I think it should all interact together because Cleansing Flame is a terrain effect and not an actual debuff just that it's being triggered off Ghostfire and not Burning. Definitely something to ask about and/or test in the future!
I wouldn't be surprised if they remove the offensive and defensive tactics culture traits since they just added it to the class tree. It also makes more sense for tactics to be based on the general rather than culture.
Okay, Next AOW playthrough: Teclis, High Loremaster As seen in gotrek and felix, on an adventure through Lustria (tropical) Have kroq gar Teclis leads a faction of dwarves Have a skaven clan Blint, Ect
I am conflicted about Character/Pantheon Breaking update, can't create new characters, because shortly after will have to go back to them, to make sure they have proper class, also my existing characters will also need fixing. Was happy with some characters, made them clous enough, now they feel flawed and incomplete, need DLC to fix them, my poor babies.
The Hero class changes and character creator are part of the Tiger Patch, so you don't need the new DLC to fix them. I'm just worried about all of the mods breaking and my customized characters becoming a walking void of missing textures. 😅
@@Fableheim DLC fixing is for my Oni and those who need to be of Japanese/Chinese culture. I am also curious about giant Rulers, some gods in movies/games are portrayed as Giants (size not race), also idea of creating Giant Mommy.
@@Erligan Ahh, I gotcha. I'm also quite excited about the Giant Ruler type and I hope they let them be affected by the Tome of Creator's Ancient of Earth. I was robbed of a giga dragon but I refuse to be robbed of a giga mommy!
It depends how you're comparing them. I'd say that TW:WH is more enjoyable for people who like RTS and army management, while AOW4 is more for enjoyers of turn-based tactical combat with a mind on overworld economy. It's also worth mentioning that TW:WH *is* its setting. The characters, world map, and story is all set in stone, and you're playing that setting out as you desire. AOW4 is more of a true sandbox where the limitation is your imagination and the rules set by the game, unless you're playing a story realm.
They didn't address it in the stream, so I'm not sure. My guess would be no because the "Alliance" is made prior to entering the game? If it does just give you -30 Devotion, then meeting a non-Team member should count as declaring war and automatically restore it. Definitely something to try and ask in the AOW4 Discord or next stream, though!
@@giacomomasi8718 well the oath of strife is evil it doesn't sound cool as oathbreaker but personally I've have never been crazy over the whole oathbreaker thing
The true evil path in this case is just Strife declaring War on everyone, but I was a little sad that Oathbreaker wasn't explored. It's just a hefty penalty for not playing to the Subculture. 😥

Triumph Studios never ceases to amaze me with the work they put into their expansions. The new hero stuff looks sick.
