Totally agree on the apes question. My Indian Springfield stock bars were just too low for me (I'm 6'2" tall). I had apes installed that brought my hands to shoulder level, and the change was incredible. More comfortable to ride, but I also had much better control in low-speed turns.
I just switched to apes (14") after being skeptical about them for years and I absolutely love them. I think the majority of people who hate on them have not actually ridden with them, as I said I was skeptical but ultimately I didn't have to ride someone else's bike who had them so didn't really bother me. Sitting on a bike and feeling the position is not enough, you need to ride with them to really see how they feel. It's a little different and there is an adjustment period, but I think that's probably true of any handlebar change.
Very valid points, I will say this though about Jerry. He is one of the people that put the motorcycle courses on the map and has been doing this for 40 plus years . His Pro Rider schools are very good and he does know his stuff. You should check out some of his demonstrations for sure. I agree with you 100% though, you find what works for you and some bikes I want to ride a certain way and other bikes I might want something different. Either way, like you said, spend your time on your bike and not the internet ;)
Oh his content is great, and I see he has tremendous skills, there's no doubt. This wasn't an attack or anything. Just giving people the side of stuff. Hats off to Jerry.
only problem I got with him is he does train motrcycle gang members. Yeah thats right, he trains cops and cops are douchebags and thats the only "motorcycle gang" in the world is motorcycle douchebags, I mean cops. lmao @@dannydlowbikertv
So many things hit with me while listening. Stock bars kill my back!! When I got my first bike and I put 12” on and I could not believe the relief and I felt like I had way better control of my bike. I also believe in riding my own ride. What I do to my bike works for me. I’ll ride my ride you ride yours.
After two back surgery's all, I can ride with is ape hangers. No more back pain. And you are so right about the trade-in. Thank you for all you do keep up the good work.
I agree. I saw that video and thought it was B.S. Thank you for pointing out his needing to get out of the parking lot. This video of yours (my first) just made me a subscriber.
That would be quite the YT mashup, DLOW and Jerry riding together. Former moto cop and former MC member. Now that would be some content!! Good stuff as always DLOW.
One of the first things I did after getting my 2022 road king was change my bars. The stock bars were uncomfortable as hell. Like you said, to each their own when it comes to your bike and riding style.
Back in cali in the late 70 early 80s ape hangers were a 1% thing, cali made a law that if your handle bars were above your shoulder it was against the law. So only 1% had them with dental mirror mounted as their rear view mirror and if they got stopped they would pull them forward to lower them when they got checked.
Interesting story and concept. I have heard guys doing that at the police harassment events such as Sturgis or Daytona. Guys would keep their clamps lose so they could pull their apes down.
I had an 08 UC that has stock bars. I traded it in for a 13 RK with 16" apes that at first I was worried about getting use to. After about 5 miles they felt like I've been riding with them forever. You are right... everyone needs to ride their own ride. Peace
Great stuff Danny! I respect Jerry, but disagreed with him also. Stock bars kill my neck. And glad you made this video to confirm my thoughts. Being that I’m a novice compared to you and Jerry, I value your opinion greatly. Thank you for the video!
Hi, thanks for the video. I wanted to make sure I heard you correctly. At around the 3:30 you sit on your bike. Did you say those are 12” bars on your Road Glide? I would have guess those were 14”s. I’m having a hard time deciding what to put on my bike. Also, do you mind me asking how tall you are? Thanks for the help.
@@dannydlowbikertv yeah me too brother. When I twist on mine she likes to stretch her legs a little. Keep it safe out there. You got a new sub on that one line tho, just sayin.
I think most people just assume ape hangers are just for aesthetics but they definitely serve a purpose for taller people. I’m 6 foot and there’s no way I could ride more than an hour with drag bars
The stock bars on the Roadglide are the worst! I have the BUNGKING bars. What a difference. I did an install video on my channel. Warning I’m low budget channel lol.
@@dannydlowbikertv I’ve put down miles and blasted curves in them. I find them the better option even when getting on and off the bike. Some apes can get in the seating area and hinder getting on the bike. Apes are also in my observation most susceptible to rolling and needing adjustment, my set up hasn’t needed to be touched.
Kinda hard to explain. Basically, when you push left you go left, push right you go right. I call it cross bar steering for some dumb reason lol but yes it's counter steering.
@@dannydlowbikertv ah right, I know all about counter steering, just never heard it called cross bar steering before - everyday a school day. When are you planning on doing a live with just you and your viewers?
@vidvid7769 yeah I probably said it wrong to be honest. I've just always called it that. Far as lives, some time soon I will be. When it gets colder out. Lol
Ive always lobed people lookin at my bike and being intimidated by my apes. I offer to let them take it for a short ride to see how comfortable and "right" they feel. Id say 9 out of 10 people are sold neqrly as soon as they sit on the bike. Ive had all combinations of bars and risers. And ya sometimes on long rides a arm or 2may get tired and i drop it down. A tired arm is way better than a sore back and a knotted up neck and shoulders. Good to see you Danny. Its always good to see you in good spirits.
I'm 5'8... I prefer 14 inch bars personally but I like my bar a little taller. 12s, put me about should height which most people want to be about there.
Thank you for this. I'm a short rider with short arms and I struggle to turn a heavy bike with wide bars. Apes give me much better leverage and buckhorns suit my weakish hands and wrists. Once you get used to them, they're peachy😊
jerry is the KING of slow riding and 80% of riders can only ride fast well you're bike don't even need you on it at fast speed Jerry is a Beast that is what his channel is about and he's right really high bars and huge wheels are not good for slow riding i have 12 inch FBI bars on my street glide and i learned how to slow speed ride with his channel..
Cool story. Lol but 98% of bikers want to ride their bikes, not sit in parking lots. The only ones that do the slow bs are cops, ever notice that? And saying at fast speeds the bike rides itself tell me how much you haven't learned about riding. Lol just saying.
Everybody has their own style, that's what makes it fun
Absolutely agree

Good video as always. I have 14's on my Roadglide ST with a Saddleman seat. My back killed me before I made the changes. Thanks for keeping it real. 💯

Great video, I didn’t know this and I love the ape-hanger look. Sweet bike bro!

Lol that could be something for sure.
I have 14inch bars, no more back pain, no more hand numbness. So apes for me were a good fit
Yessir. Same here. I look at bars like a sleep number bed. My number is 14 as well. Lol
So many great points apes no back pain no neck pain and head up vision to each there own apes for life for me
Agreed. Thank you.
I run 14 s on my sg 18 s on my ol softy

Ape hangers look gangster cool especially the way the mongos mc dress up there bikes .

Great topic I hate stock bars. Got to have apes. Awesome video have a good one Danny D.
Thank you. And I agree. 💯
my favorite part is the handicapped canes in the thumbnail of the video lmao

12 inch bars. I'm 5.8
Bars are the first things to get swapped.. Before pipes before seats, bars..
I normally try to do all three at the same time. But yes, I'm doing my bars first
He said "Awesome rider..... For riding in parking lots". Lol, shit got real off the top.
🤣 to each their own but I like riding my bike on the streets. Lol

Drag bars for me. Awesome video.
Thank you. I remember drag bars on my old shovels and soft tails. They were cool till I ran apes.
The stock bars on the Roadglide are the worst! I have the BUNGKING bars. What a difference. I did an install video on my channel. Warning I’m low budget channel lol.
T-bars for the win!
I still haven't road a bagger with them. But I everyone I've seen with them swear by them now.
T bars or risers with straight bars for the win 100%

Good video. 12" apes are perfect for me. What is cross bar steering? Never heard of it. Is it another name for counter steering?

I've owned several Harleys and I've put apes on every one of them from 12 in to 18 in apes and have a Great riding position
Same here. Loved them all. But 14 seems to my number.
