    Selena's movie was on point mainly because the family was behind the project. Jennifer Lopez had access to Selena's home videos, her costumes (she wore them in the movie) and she met and spent time with the family. Once Aaliyah's family said no, The producers of Lifetime and Wendy Williams should have backed off!

    • @jayLanette90
      @jayLanette90 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I believe I saw in a clip that they even let her sleep in her bedroom when she came to visit the family so she could get to know who Selena was as a person

    • @Selena101
      @Selena101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes. However the costumes we re made by selena's seamstresses because Jennifer was an inch smaller than Selena. Jennifer however had it harder than the rest of the cast because she was the only one who didnt have Selena to spend time with. However, with the help,of the family, the whole movie was a success and i wish Aaliyahs could of been the same. lifetime should have stopped producing the movie after the family had disapproved

    Also wanted to say that in an interview Alexandra Shipp admitted that she didn't have a lot of time to research for the part of Aaliyah because the movie started filming right after Drum Line: A New Beat wrapped up smh. It seems like she just wanted the job whether it be for the money or the attention. Why would you accept a role to play a real person without doing the proper research? J.Lo actually met with Selena's family and slept in Selena's room when she played her in the Selena movie. She even wore some of Selena's costumes in the movie. Family consent is better than none at all.

      Its like JLo became Selena and the movie was damn good the Aaliyah movie went from her being in elementary school for about 5 mins then it went to commercial and BAM she was in High School what kind of shit is that who were her playmates what was her favorite tv show games none of that just like NORTORIOUS (biggie smalls) he went to the big screen and the movie was a hit as well I hope the parent take the real story to the big screen

    • @kourtneym431
      @kourtneym431 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Alexandra she did heavily researched everything about Aaliyah. The dances, interviews, music videos etc but she ended up underperforming which is odd it could be partially from the project being rushed so she couldn’t fully develop the character but then again she did so much research but it failed to show in the movie.

    I side eye any biopic that doesn't have the artist's greatest hits. Once I heard that permission was denied for them to use the music, I already knew the movie could only go down hill from there...and it did.

  • @Tristan11406
    @Tristan11406 9 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    Wendy Williams is by far the messiest person I have ever seen. She doesn't give a shit about Aaliyah, she just wanted to exposed the scandal behind the R. Kelly situation; which many people were privy to. The movie barely covered Aaliyah's career and the impact she had on music during the time she was alive. During the mid 90's to early 2000's Aaliyah was one of the biggest young female artist around; Along with Brandy and Monica. All three started around the same time and they all had successful multi-platinum albums. Wendy is getting dragged to HELL all over social media.

    Zendaya is probably like 'Thank goodness I quit'. She knew it was gonna be a disaster and didn't want to be involved. Way to go girl! And haha Wendy Williams as an executive producer...it's sad some people just want to profit of a dead person. RIP I'm out (mic drop)

    I believe if it was Missy and Timbaland was producing the biopic. Aaliyah's family would have given the green light because they know them personality and vice versa. Where as Wendy Williams is the queen of controversy she based the movie on "facts". In which we all know most of her facts are wrong, and what rubs me the wrong way is she's boasting about the movie as if she created a masterpiece. Smh

    It was just... Shameful. The girl that played Aaliyah did not look, sound or act like Aaliyah but at least she looked more like her then the people they cast for almost everybody else. I just feel like, if you knew you didn't have the rights to the music which was SO important for something like this, then everything else needed to be on point, and it wasn't. Let's make a check list, Music NO, Script NO, Acting NO, Accurate impersonations of well known people NO, Editing NO, Replacement song choices NO, Pacing NO, Casting HELL NO!!! There was literally not a single good thing I could say about it.

    I couldn't wait to see what you, Justin, Bondy and Kevin are have to say about the movie. I remember when she hit the scene and this was really a short way to tell a story. Once Wendy couldn't get the rights to the music she should have dropped the project. Doing a bio-pic on a musical artist HAS TO include the music and full story, along proper portrayals, and acting and it just didn't flow.

    The best biopics I have ever seen are from Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Foxx, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishbourne, Meryl Streep, and Chris Hemsworth. Jennifer Lopez did an amazing job because the family gave her their blessing to play her. The same goes for Jamie Foxx when he played Ray Charles, Lou Diamond Philips when he played Ritchie Valens, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishbourne playing Tina and Ike Turner, Meryl Streep playing Margaret Thatcher, and Chris Hemsworth playing James Hunt. It looked like Wendy wanted to make money off of a deceased woman. She made the movie to only talk about the negatives in Aaliyah's life. I can't believe she had the balls to come out with a movie this disgraceful to this woman's image and memory.

    • @strawberriesncandii
      @strawberriesncandii 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Diamond Nova Before the movie came out the family said outright that they did not approve of the movie. They knew she just wanted to make a film based on negativity so they barred her from using her music. They she went on her show and said that the family did not approve and said that she didn't need permission and that she was still moving forward. That's a terrible way to commemorate the memory of someone. Timbaland wasn't even on board with the movie.

    The one thing I didn't like was that they made it seem like Aaliyah was the sole instigator in the R.Kelly relationship, and that she was the one pressuring him. Bullshit. It is now well known that Kelly was messing around with young girls before Aaliyah, during Aaliyah, and after Aaliyah. Not saying that he full out forced himself on her and she didnt have a thing for him, but i am sure there was a lot of manipulation on his part. I also didnt like how they had Aaliyah throwing little temper tantrums and being all rude and disrespectful to her parents and brother and acting all immature and shit. I mean I get that she was still a teenage girl and I'm sure she had her moments but everyone that actually knew Aaliyah said that she was very mature for her age and was a very calm person and hardly ever got upset about anything so I couldnt picture her all acting a fool like that. And you mean to tell me that she spent 5 years moping and walking around looking all suicidal and shit over R.Kelly? Please!

    • @krboops26
      @krboops26 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Someone that worked with R. Kelly said they sugarcoated their relationship smh... They did try to seem like they were justifying the relationship. If the family didn't want it, the couldn't tell the real story & they had to rush the movie they just shouldn't have done the movie. It was bullshit and I was hoping that Alexandra would do a lot better than she did in that drumline movie. I was forcing myself to finish it though and at the end of the movie I STILL don't know shit about Aaliyah which was the point of me watching it :/ But R. Kelly was her first love.. I don't believe she was moping around for 5 years but they kept saying she wasn't in a "serious" relationship after him until Dame so she probably dated a little but wasn't ready to fully commit because of R. Kelly though.

      First and foremost as a parent of a you girl whose 15 why in the hell where was the parents during these studio sessions there would be no where in hell i would allow my daughter to be hanging out in the studio with a grown ass man. BAD PARENTING if thats really how it went down.

      krboops26 I think the parents would of told the real story for the big screen, if wendy williams would of just stayed out of it. I know Aaliyah was no Micheal Jackson and her life was starting to unfold but I still would of wanted people to know who my daughter was before the tragic accident and wendy ruined all that for those who didnt know her.

      I don't think bad parenting, they don't look like or act like bad parents to me, they just want to give their girl her dream of being a star and was naive to the whole industry thing. R. Kelly have no business messing with her, he was grown and she was a minor, so I fault him more than her. I feel bad for them because she passed wayyy to young and have her whole life and career ahead of her. RIP AAliyah.

    I wasn't going to watch it bc Aaliyah's family said no and that usually means they gotta cut corners and make things up as fillers or what they thought happen. As soon as I saw "Missy" I was like nope. The girl who played Aaliyah played herself and she clearly will be doing straight to video movies for a while bc that movie ruined her. It was sad and ppl need to stop playing with other ppl's legacies for a dollar. Selena is my all time favorite. To me Jennifer can't act her way out of a paper bag but homegirl had believing that she was Selena. Smh. Wendy needs to apologize. Let's do her biopic and have Madea play her or one o the Queens for RPDR, see how she likes it.

    I didn't watch, but it felt like I did cause twitter was giving it blow by blow. Wendy said from day one she was getting involved to put the R Kelly scandal on blast. We already knew about that tho. Honestly, nobody knows what went down between them but Aaliyah, her fam and R Kelly. Ppl were tweeting that Aaliyah was a dry person like the actress. I dont tgink she was dry, she was just more laid back. But that doesn't justify bad acting. I think because I grew up with Aaliyah I think she deserved better. I was in hs in the late 90s and Aaliyah was the shit at that time. She was talented to me. Wendy made a complete mockery our of Aaliyah's legacy just to prove a point.

    That movie was a dishonor to not only Aaliyah's legacy, but to her family and her fans. Nothing about it was accurate and truthful. Wendy Williams just wanted to dig up any kind of dirt she could find on Aaliyah. When it was first announce that Lifetime was doing this movie, Wendy made it no secret that all she wanted to know was what really went down between Aaliyah and R. Kelly. She didn't care about telling Aaliyah's story the right way. She just wanted to dig into her personal life. When Aaliyah was alive, she always kept her personal life private. The casting is horrible. None of the actors look nowhere close to the people they portrayed in the movie. The acting was not all that great especially Alexander's. Out of all the cast members, Alexander did look the closest to Aaliyah, but she did not do Aaliyah justice. She didn't embody the core essence of Aaliyah that same way Jennifer Lopez did for Selena, Jamie Foxx for Ray Charles, Angela Bassett for Tina Turner and Chadwick Boseman for James Brown. Me personally I think Ciara would have been a more better choice for Aaliyah, and with all the black full-figured actresses in Hollywood and they chose to cast a skinny light skinned actress as Missy Elliott like really? They could have gotten Amber Riley or that girl who plays Gabrielle Union's niece in Being Mary Jane or Danielle Brooks who plays Taystee on Orange Is the New Black.

    Am so pissed off about the movie. I feel like this movie is so degrading and it ruins her legacy for those who didn't grow up listening to her music. To me it degrades dark skin/ brown skinned people cause they only used light skinned people to play the roles of people who are dark/brown skinned in real life(Aaliyah, missy, etc). And I feel like it degrades big people too by picking only skinny people to play the role of real life big people during that time period(missy and timberland). Lifetime got some issues with that type of shit that they need to fix! It's fucked up how Hispanic people have a great reference like The Selena film to show their kids on who was a great female role model but we can do the same for this Aaliyah movie for our kids or younger sibles! I grew up listening to her music and I LOVE Aaliyah and this movie did not embody her legacy at all! Aaliyah was my role model when I younger. Am so pissed about this film that I've serious cried over how bad it was.

    This movie was HORRIBLE! Why didn't they speak to the directors that directed the TLC movie. The cast, the story line, and music was ridiculous. I agree it all felt rushed and it wasn't going anywhere..This is KARMA for Wendy doing this without her family and Missy and Tim's consent.

    I said the same thing about missy. They had "work it" missy in a 90's setting. Then what was the deal with the thang playing R. Kelly? You can tell they didn't get payed much because dude didn't even think twice about cutting his hair for the role. They didn't even put a decent bald cap on him. Fix it Jesus!

    Check out his song "She Got That Vibe" released in 1991. When she was 12 at the most and check out the shout out 3:34. Mind you this song was co-written by her uncle Barry. They all were well aware of their frolicking. I personally don't think a bio-pic is necessary. It will get too deep and possibly messy if all facts aren't included. I don't think no one could pull it off playing Aaliyah anyway!

    I feel like if so many people didn't know her that Ciara would have been a good Aaliyah and this is why:
    1. Ciara can ACTUALLY DANCE and some would argue better than Aaliyah
    2. Ciara has a similar facial structure and most importantly that jawline
    3. Ciara has the same body structure with no extra additives like Aaliyah
    4. Ciara has a real chill and lowkey vibe like Aaliyah
    5. Like Aaliyah, Ciara's vocals are not strong but she is a really good performer
    The only question would be can she act? A lot of people think it would be a bad idea to cast Ciara because she is too well known and that could overshadow the role, however a lot of people knew lil Mama and in mostly a negative light, however she is so similar to left eye that for a moment we forgot that it was just acting. I hope the family does redo the movie and Ciara should really be considered.

      @MariahSincere 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Ciara is a beauty too. I think that today in 2014 she is just not as appealing to people because she is all natural and fit looking but Ciara and Aaliyah share very similar bone structures.

    • @MariahSincere
      @MariahSincere 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      brianna hughes Maybe so but then again I feel like part of the reason the movie was so bad was that the actress, though very pretty, was too young looking and acting. Aaliyah had a very mature feel to her even early on, plus Ciara has not aged too much from when she came out at 18. She takes good care of herself.

    • @MariahSincere
      @MariahSincere 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      C heart I can tell you just want to argue. I never said Aaliyah couldn't sing or that you have to have a strong voice to sing. I did say that her vocals were not strong but she was a very good entertainer. For example Chris Brown is not that strong of a vocalist, however he can carry a good tune, dance his butt off, and put on a great performance. On top of that he is working with a pretty good team. All of these aspects came together really well with Aaliyah.

    • @MariahSincere

    Ashley, I wanted to be objective about this movie but they glossed over a lot of stuff. Plus they focus too much on her relationship with R. Kelly. Alexandra looked off key and stiff dancing. She could sing but she never made the character her own. I'm not gonna comment on the Missy and Tim casting. Smdh. They should have done what NBC did for The Temptation movie made it two parts, now that was a great made for t.v. movie. All in all I would give the movie 2 stars. I'm being generous. Zendaya definitely dodged a bullet.

    You hit everything and point I felt about the bad job done of just slapping the Aaliyah movie together, how I felt cheated waiting to hear my favorite song by her; "Back and forth" and how the music sound track sounded crazy when it sped up and slowed down and how the acting and writing sucked especially the guys that played R. Kelly and Damion Dash. Aaliyah would be about my oldest nieces age I she were still alive.I 'm 51 years young and I have been on stage myself back in my younger days with the likes of Big Daddy Kane just to drop a name and the beats and sounds that Timberland and Missy did with her in their studio was hot. Wendy and the writers really screwed up this project.

      I Agree with you More then 100%! Why Did they waist their Time Making this Ridiculous Movie if they was not going to put Aaliyah's Hit Songs in the Movie? Because People want to hear all of Aaliyah's Music! Back and Forth, We Need a Resolution, One in a Million, Are you That Somebody, Rock the Boat, ETC! This Movie was Rushed and not Very well put together! When you work on a Movie Project it should not have to be horrible Like this Movie was! This Movie was Total Crap and Should have Never made it on TV! And the Ending was total Trash! I Agree with you About this Ridiculous Making of a TV Movie that Look Like it cost $1.50 to make!

    Everyone involved in this movie, every single person, cannot say that they are for Aaliyah. They are strictly for Hollywood and for themselves. If any of these people were for Aaliyah, this movie would not have existed. Why, because they would know for sure that Aaliyah had family first, always. And the simple fact that everyone involved disrespected that, I cannot fathom how anyone in the right mind, could approve of this. It's not about the fans or what we want, if Diane Haughton, the women who birthed Aaliyah isn't ready to make a movie, or touch on the subject, it is no ones right to take matters into their own hands. But there is no control behind that, Lifetime, Wendy, all of them they were not for Aaliyah they are for themselves, they did what they wanted to do. Whether or not you thought Aaliyah was prime in her time, this was good for business, especially in this generation since we're all so moral less and brain dead these days. And of course everyone who watched the movie, hater or lover, you brought the dollars in. Wendy would have lost if no one made the movie relevant. But of course, nowadays we're more concerned with making stupid things relevant. From a morals perspective, Wendy is trash, Lifetime is trash and the whole production and cast is trash. From a business perspective, they did their job and got paid for it. Being a huge fan of Aaliyah, this is so disappointing. But stuff like this shows you peoples true colors and character, it shows you that people are willing to do anything for fame and a dollar, even if that means, playing games with the dead. That's pretty sad and pathetic if you ask me.

What really got me was when, for example, they showed her sitting with a movie producer and being told she would be good as Trish in Romeo Must Die and then the very next scene is the premiere of the movie! I laughed so hard when I saw Tim and Missy! I tuned in 45 minutes into it. I was so determined not to watch it, but after seeing the tweets about it, I was curious. As soon as they revealed the family said no to lifetime, I knew it was gonna be a fail. Like, how tf you gone have a girl that can't sing, dance nor act, and doesn't even resemble her playing her role?!?!?!?! It makes no sense. LOL, I fast forwarded every time this girl sang. I don't have any respect for anyone who participated in this movie they knew exactly what that were doing. Wendy Williams needs her own movie... Let's have Ving Rhymes be the lead.

    The R. Kelly and Aaliyah scenes made me cringe. They were so uncomfortable, like knowing the story and seeing how awkward she was during interviews about the marriage is SO DIFFERENT from seeing their relationship acted out, because Alexandra Shipp really did look like a 15 year old girl. When R. Kelly told Aaliyah he believed God put her in his life, I almost fainted.

    When I first saw this beginning of this video I was like YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
    But I think that only Aaliyah's greedy ass uncle and cousin wants a theatrical release. Aaliyah's direct family (mother, brother, and late father) doesn't want a movie.
    OMG! I was just talking about that tweet! lmfao. Wendell needs to sit down!! Like you're not a true Aaliyah fan if you don't know what your favorite song is correctly.
    And I didn't watch the movie. So thank you for your review =)

      carmenjones411 Rashad has written a fitting screenplay for his sister, back in 2006, but uncle Barry and cousin Jomo own all of the music and estate rights, so his hands are essentially tied. The next movie is all about her uncle and cousin making bank. Her mom and brother just want to survive her loss, in peace. I find it quite convenient that they rush to do this after her dad dies. [EDIT] A little talked about fact: She was also considering signing with The Roc, but she was her uncle's cash cow and the life blood of Blackground Records...that's really shady right there in and of itself. He also acted a fool during the whole wrongful death trial...acted as if she was a property loss, not his niece. Speaks volumes as to why he has been estranged from his own sister, her mom for well over a decade now. Heck, Gladys Knight left him eons ago! I feel for her mom and brother, this opens old wounds and spreads lies.

    • @AdorzAaliyahSince94
      @AdorzAaliyahSince94 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephy, she was actually fired because of the backlash, they just allowed her to save face. That's the real fuel behind her tweet. Wendell jumped on board because other producers quit from lack of estate clearance. Lifetime willingly let her be their scapegoat and it's working, not like she's honorable or anything. She never got that interview from R. and she didn't like Aaliyah , so she did a film with venom in that thing she calls a heart. Method Man still wants to have a one-on-one with her.
