    The only real issue I ever had with this change was the idea that the pirates were attacking the town in search of Jack. I feel the movie additions could've worked just as well without making the plot center around the guy.

      The entire attraction is stunning, even in video format w/o translation. It even features two story endings that alternate randomly between each ride. It gets a lot of hate because a lot of people think it's supposed to be the a rendition of the original.

    I have an idea: Keep the Davy Jones/Blackbeard projections, the mermaids and the animatronics of Captains Barbossa and Jack as cameos.
    However
    Change the plot back to the search for treasure and pillage of the city - almost like a spinoff/side quest for Barbossa and his crew.
    Have Jack only appear at the end sitting on the throne having made off with the treasure.
    Everyone is happy, right?

      Nah. It shouldn't have any of the film characters in it at all. End of story. The ride was so brilliant and iconic it inspired those films. It should have been left that way. Changing it was an insult to both the loyal disney fans and the imagineers who originally made the ride. Besides, the mermaids were by far the worst thing about it.

      It's not any particular change that annoys me, it's the overall redirection from what pirates even are. To continue to not offend an increasingly fragile public, they need to just change the name to "nautical naughty party animals", because "rape, pillage and plunder"? What was the general public in 1960s thinking?

    I’ve been saying it since the beginning. To save the whole franchise they need to build a Pirates themed mini land, in which they make two rides: one being the original ride, with a majority of the movie tie ins removed, and the other ride being a carbon copy of the Shanghai Disney land version.

    I haven't been to Disneyland since 2009, but I had grown up going to Disneyland, must have been 50+ times in the late 80's and early 90's. When I got to go back in 2009 and I saw all the updates to Pirates of the Caribbean, I was one of the VERY disappointed people.... felt like a lot of what I loved about its previous incarnations was lost by adding the movie characters in.
    Also always felt like watching the movie as someone who was very familiar with the ride was like getting an extra treat to catch all the ride references in the movie. I'm sad that some of those aspects are now gone because they incorporated movie elements back into the ride.

  • @SouthJerseySam
    @SouthJerseySam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Can't say it bothered me that they changed several aspects of the ride. I'm just grateful it still has some of the same elements that were familiar with the original version. And the song is still being played on the ride. It's not like they made it entirely based on the films themselves, just a couple spots here and there.

    I love the original pirates movie purely because of all the little nods to the ride. The jail scene, the redhead is in the pirate town, them burning down the port is super reminiscent of the ride, I wish they kept it up with the others

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You forgot a few others like Gibbs sleeping among the pigs being a reference to the pirate sleeping among the pigs in the ride and the entire cave where the Aztec chest is hidden and the whole conflict of the Black Pearl crew being cursed to become walking undead pirates and turning into skeletons when exposed to moonlight is a reference to the first half of the ride where you go through a cave and see skeletons of pirates and the audio mentioning it’s due to a curse from the treasure. So the entire premise of the first film is built around that first half of the ride and minor plot.

    7:37 Okay, that's actually kind of funny

  • @MCLegoboy

    What's interesting is that most people will not get the references made in At World's End when they fall over the edge of the world and go to Davy Jones' Locker. The screen goes black with audio from the ride used, and now it's all been changed in the actual ride. It's almost as if the movie was the ride's last hurrah and died with everyone in the movie.

    I rode Paris' PotC shortly after it had it's red head/Jack Sparrow update. Honestly, it's the best version. On the Red Head side, (with the caveat I don't understand French) She was just another pirate there. The blue dressed woman had jewels draped on her and all it all it felt very natural. Only the auctioneer and the pirates on the seats to your right spoke.
    As for the Jack stuff, it (mostly) worked. DLP's version has this... melancholy draped over the ride. Your first glimpse of Pirates stuff is an abandoned ship crashed on an island with a sunk dinghy full of treasure inside. The Skeleton Caverns are at the beginning and the end of the ride with the Pirates slowly being added. You can miss the first few because they are quiet and out of your immediate line of sight. The Pirate Captain is the same as before, and the rest of the ride seemed to be the same way. (again, don't speak French so I am unsure what the town square sequence said)
    Barbossa shows up at the end. His animatronic is FLUID and manages to do a jump scare on you. He laughs and turns into a skeleton with the skeleton captain aways behind him. It really feels like he's an immortal, trapped below a ruined city. He's surrounded by treasure, and by his crew who murdered each other for gold no one can use. What good was that adventure? What did anyone gain?
    Jack then ruins it by singing with the gold before the exist, but cut that part out and you have a BRILLIANT fusion of all the parts to make a great ride.
    And there's the fencing animatronics. Those are still amazing.

  • @wjsproductions1784
    @wjsproductions1784 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    IMO, this is what makes the ride in Shanghai so great. That ride was built *from the ground up* with the movie tie-ins in mind. That way the movie addition of characters and plot elements from the movies don't feel tacked on like they do at the other parks.
    IF said other parks have the space for this, then I think what needs to happen is that there needs to be another attraction next to the preexisting POTC rides that will be more centered around the movies, with references to the original ride to tie them both in the same continuity. Then you can take all of the movie stuff out of the original ride (aside from a few winks and nods) and into the new attraction.
    The OG ride fans will have something resembling the classic ride they grew up with, and the movie fans won't be complaining to Disney Park management about a lack of Jack Sparrow. Everybody wins!

    Honestly now that the ride has been changed so much I would be game for a total redesign. (the following is solely about the Disneyland version) If I was in Imagineering I would be petitioning for replacing the older and less realistic AA frames (not their faces), removing Jack Sparrow as a major role- removing all dialogue references and AA's-(but keeping the reference in his portrait in the queue and adding a mostly hidden AA of him in the back of the prison scene) and completely redesigning the old lust scene into a battle between the soldiers of the town and the invaders. I would however keep some of the movie tie ins, such as the Barbossa animatronic and the inclusion of Davey Jones (in fact I would redesign his scene in the cavern to look more "realistic" and lengthen hi dialogue on the lift hill ). I would also add an on-board triggered sound system in the boats, not for ride soundtrack but rather to sync the Davey Jones and talking skull voices to the boats themselves. All that would put into emphasis the whole idea of the pirates in the caves being the same ones that are in the rest of the ride and such. (Davey Jones would say things like "If ye be brave or foolish enough to hear these Dead Men's Tale, proceed!" and on the lift hill say something about how the pirates evil brought them to their terrible fate)
    Honestly if a ride is so far gone, why pretend.

    The saddest thing to me was that when I first heard about the shift to the auction scene, my initial thought was "Well, at least it's not another movie tie-in."
    As someone who grew up with the original Pirates, the changes that added the film elements killed the spirit and feel of the attraction. I still feel that the additions could have been handled with a lot more care to the existing narrative. Despite it not being obvious (at least to a lot of today's guests), there was a cohesive story set up: the skeletons seen in the grotto are what's left of the pirates that ransacked the town, the "cursed treasure" being the loot they stole, and the ghostly powers of the cave sending you back to witness what happened; now Davey Jones pops to, say you're going back to see their fate? It's unclear. Making it worse, Jack ultimately succeeds in getting the treasure before the rest of the pirates - where did the loot in the caves come from then? It sort of renders the initial caves a series of unrelated vignettes, I feel.
    By far the most obnoxious thing though - the thing that makes it feel like shoehorning, and something that could have easily been avoided - is some of the dialogue changes. Every pirate in the ride does not need to yell "CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW" to get the point across that now he's our protagonist. We know Jack, and there he is. The most egregious scene that uses this is the dunking scene, where the main pirate now demands to know where CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow is (and the treasure as an afterthought), but the mayor still will not talk. Why would he (and his wife) defend Jack? He's a mayor, Jack's an outlaw, and presumably if he gives up Jack the pirates will leave... or at least he would hope that. But no, pirates seeking treasure takes a backseat to reminding the audience that everything is all about Jack now: you love Jack, you only care about Jack. Ugh.
    In closing, I would have been happier with the auction scene changes, but once again the new dialogue is so contrived and devoid of anything fun or original that it actually makes me cringe hearing it. They had every opportunity to make the scene still fun and memorable, and even give the iconic Redhead a few awesome lines now that she's a pirate, but no. And in so doing we lost yet another iconic Paul Frees voice for the Auctioneer.
    And people ask me why I've taken my business over to Knott's Berry Farm instead...

    • @fatsmcgee8923
      @fatsmcgee8923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CrackedMack yea, Paul Frees' voice as the Auctioneer was a great one. If he was still around though, I'm sure he would've redone those lines. But yea, i see where you're coming from. Walt's rolling in his grave as we speak

      Female Pirate: "i ain't no plunder muttonheads, now get movin' or else"
      (Female Pirate Shoots Gun W/ Sound Effect)
      alternate lines can be like this
      Female Pirate: "keep movin' boys, there will be enough for none of you, for my name isn't, Anne Bonny!"
      Female Pirate: "don't make me stuff my corset down your throats"
      Female Pirate: "I see you lookin' boys, but first, get movin'!"
      i think these would make for better lines in my opinion, it matches the tone of the original, and i think the character should be anne bonny, the original female pirate, and they could've made the brides into other pirates with the right designs

    Seriously the Jack Sparrow love feast needs to end someday.
    Mainly because i think Disney is no longer interested in this franchise to begin with and also the fact that the fifth movie really sucked out any leftover good will, people still had with the character and sadly the actor as well.
    Also the movie tie ins don't really make sense with the still original 1960s elements of the old story

    I'm inclined to question the sensibility of making pirates 'PC' considering there's literally nothing PC about pirates in the first place.

    Alright, I waited till the end of pt. 2 to post this just to make sure you weren't going to mention it - and maybe that's totally intentional as it could be inappropriate for the channel. But when I was a kid in the 90's, during the burning village portion of the ride, I clearly remember seeing a Menorah (a lampstand usually associated with Judaism) ON FIRE in one of the windows. It was tough to spot and fairly hidden, but if you knew where to look, it was obvious.
    Even as a kid I knew there was something sinister about it. I started looking out for it on every trip we took to the park - about 5 or 10 years down the road (early 2000s?) it was gone, and the window was empty and I think no longer even on fire.
    Is there any documentation or background on this?

    The thing about newcomers demanding the source material conform to their limited experiences with the franchise is an all too real and naturally occurring event in reality. When something has been around for a while, but then gets a huge popularity spike, it will inevitably result in the newcomers believing they should be catered to, as vain and vapid as they are, demand instant gratification on any whim that strikes them. Another example is how movie-adaptations of, for instance, comic books, usually results in the comic books changing to conform to the new movies, like how most if not all X-Men for a time wore generic full-black body suits devoid of other colors. I won't be surprised if Thanos now starts dressing like a dock worker in Marvel Comics because of Infinity War.

    My only visit to Disneyland, or any Disney park for that matter, was in 2004 when I was 16. I got to see the attraction before the change was made to the movie theming. I love watching these videos about Disneyland/World despite only going to Land once. I really need to get to Disney World some point in my life, but flights to Orlando from Denver are expensive, plus the cost of admissions and such. I'm jealous of those that live close enough to the parks or have the money to see the parks regularly.

    Here's a fun fact I'd like to toss in: As of the big refurbishment that added all the movie elements, know who does the voice of the skull at the cavern entrance who warns you of squalls ahead and tells you to keep your arms and legs in the boat? That's James Arnold Taylor, the voice double for Michael J. Fox, and better known as the voice of Ratchet, Johnny Test, Tidus from Final Fantasy 10, Fred Flintstone in newer cartoons, and Captain Jack Sparrow himself in the Kingdom Hearts games.

    I don't know if auctioning off women was a thing real historical pirates did or just a fictionalised version but, in either case, the pirates are supposed to be the bad guys so it's acceptable to show them behaving badly towards the townsfolk. You're supposed to be thinking, "Auctioning slave brides? Aren't these pirates an unscrupulous, reprehensible bunch of scoundrels?" Not, "Ooh, that's a good idea, I think I'll kidnap a group of women and sell them at auction for money!" And if it was thought unsuitable for children, why did they include it in the first place?
    The new redhead character is cool but if they wanted to change it, they should have scrapped the auction idea altogether and given her a completely different role, it's a lazy change as the new auction doesn't even make sense, what would pirates want with oil paintings and grandfather clocks?

  • @THEQueeferSutherland
    @THEQueeferSutherland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +75

    I'm not really a nostalgic person, but I do think it sucks that all the changes were made, as this is meant to capture a time period. Of course women were chased around and sold off, this is not supposed to represent 2018 and how we now know to treat women and stuff. It would be like having an attraction about the civil war but erasing all references to slavery because it's not pleasant to think about.
    I remember being creeped out by this ride as a kid, there was something dark and unsettling about it where it didn't feel safe - like knowing the pirates in the ship scene were animatronic, but there's still a possibility that we could get hit.. What was especially creepy were the old voices, the warm analog old tape sound of them added to the creepiness. I dig that stuff, but whatever, it's for kids to enjoy now so if that's what they want, good on them I guess.

    • @brianz1574
      @brianz1574 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      QueeferSutherland
      The thing is the ride is not meant to be a historically accurate portrayal but a romanticized version. Pirates in real life, even back then, are very different from how we view them in pop culture, we just pick and choose what's cool and just keep those. When something questionable is added it's because that part was specifically chosen as something cool to keep around. Violence specifically towards woman has been going out of fashion to say the least so if we were to continue showing that aspect it that would be very troubling.

      Brian Z well pirates isnt supposed to be a historical representation of course but we have a man being tortured in the scene right before and arson not far after, not to mention the constant alcoholism and violence shown throughout the ride and all of these have no place in our society yet no one wants to bring these up as a problem when they are just as bad. It comes of hypocritical to attack the auction scene but not the others also i haven't once heard anyone complain about the scene before the change was announced and no woman i personally know has had a problem with, hell my GF is personally really sad it's leaving. I think most people realize that the stuff shown in pirates is wrong and that even in their pop culture form they are almost always seen as villains so showing them doing awfull things is gonna happen. This really seems like outrage for outrages sake and not a actually needed change.

    I'm always bothered by the complaint that Jack Sparrow's animatronics look "too realistic" compared to the other cartoonish pirates - because one of the most frustrating aspects of old Disney character design is that lead characters (with a heavy bias towards any female characters meant to be "beautiful" in general, regardless of role) have always looked more realistic compared to cartoonish side characters. It feels really hollow and shows a lack of awareness about Disney to complain about something like that.

      After a lot of soul searching, I've come to terms with this change, and I don't think it's something to appease SJWs. Disney is meant to be a place for escapist entertainment, somewhere where we can go with our favorite characters on an adventure. When Walt opened the park, it was a mix of that and educational exibits, and the initial iteration of Pirates was more of the latter, with the hedonistic immoral pirates pillaging the town, raping the women, and in the end they pay for it by getting drunk and burning to death. But ever since the movies came out, we've switched sides, so now we're rooting for the pirates. I loved the initial vague storytelling of the life of the Scarlet Pirate Queen, and how it was delivered, being subtle and open to interpretation, and I will deeply miss it. But as a place that caters more twords kids, Disney needs to focus on a sense of going on an adventure; fun entertainment that will create memories. Let the kids learn the truth about how Pirates acted in 5-7 years when their in middle school. In the end I'm just surprised the auction scene lasted as long as it did.
