Hey all! I started writing/researching this video ages ago, and thought it was about time to finally get it out! I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did digging into them! Mark
Don't get me wrong - your production values and content is amazing (especially your histories of extinct rides - love them!), but I think your videos would be so much better if you made less of an effort to put on a "narrator voice". At the moment, you're sOUnDinG a BiT, lIkE tHiS, WhEn, YoU'rE TalkING. Edit: Actually I think the weird pauses and changes of tone might be to do with recording very short takes, stopping halfway through sentences.
Do you know if the broadcast of All You Need is Love is still available for viewing? The broadcast has been taken down from TH-cam, and I haven't been able to find it since.
Fun fact about the BBC erasing Dr Who tapes, I think Michael Palin of Monty Python heard that the BBC were erasing and reusing tapes, so he actually stole all the Monty Python episodes from their vaults.
Not stole. One of the Pythons (I forget which one exactly) bartered with the BBC, buying them new blank tapes in exchange for the master tapes of _Monty Python's Flying Circus._
It's a shame the Sesame Street episode was pulled, since Margaret Hamilton was a sweet, delightful woman in real life but instead she gets remembered for terrifying children. She made an appearance on Mister Rogers that I rember fondly.
Believe it or not in an earlier draft I included a part about her appearing on Mister Rogers, as articles had compared the two, but since in that she was out of character, it seemed an unfair comparison.
It’s honestly amazing that so many of the originally missing Doctor Who episodes have been recovered, and some of them recently, like Enemy of the World was rediscovered in 2013. Some guy just found it in a cupboard in Nigeria
. Sadly though, like a few other things they were GOING to do (i.e., recording the dialog for their very own, "Yellow Submarine" movie), they blew it off because ........oh, I don't know.......they felt they were too "important"........or just couldn't be bothered........or simply were just too lazy to bother with it (or......none of the above?) ?? You decide.... .
I understand it never happened. I just don't believe it was even a thing. Never heard anybody remotely related to the boys even suggesting the band would appear on the tv show. would make a great fan boy dream but not reality. What year was this supposed to have planned?
It's more a lack of keeping proper archives. Everyone thought that everyone else had a record so they didn't need to keep theirs. But even with home VCRs it was common to re-record over old tapes. And there's few today who haven't erased old material on a drive to reuse the space for something else. Destroying old stuff is just a common practice.
I have seen an episode of Mr Rogers Neighborhood and Margaret Hamilton was a guest . Mr Rogers talked to Ms Hamilton about her Wicked Witch of the West character and that though her character wasn’t nice, but the actress herself was a very loving person. I don’t think anyone wrote into PBS about their kids being traumatized by Ms Hamilton’s appearance.
The visual was done for PR reasons and had no other "scientific" value. It was not seen as that important by the pencil pushers of the time. A lot of early TV, done on video, including the first episodes of Johnny Carson's Tonight show are list forever, the tapes re-used for shows you have never even heard of today.
I have always wanted to see Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch from that episode. Now I know why I can only find still shots. Stupid parents complaining about the episode. 😡
MontagZoso Weird that they never received complaints about the early Count who was scary! Or the Yip-Yips Oatmeal E&B short where the house started shaking and the martians came through the wall to eerie synthesizer sounds
Least when my mom complained that an ad had some almost subliminal gun images, 'cause she saw me miming having one in my hand as i watched it, it was a legit concern.
Stories of lost media is so fascinating but so utterly depressing. All that hard work, wasted. And to think of all the things Disney is keeping in their “vault” just for the hell of it, is more infuriating.
Most of the stuff in their vaults is just material used for development of works. Pretty much everything Disney has produced is available. Even Song of the South can be found on UK DVDs.
writerpatrick But Song of the South isn't available in America as well as not showing the black centaur character Sunflower in the film Fantasia due to Disney's absurd SJW and politically correct ideology.
"due to disney's absurd SJW and politically correct ideology" yeah, because Disney, a company that makes movies for little impressionable kids, going "yeah, maybe we should cut out the black slave stereotype character/take the movie where slavery is all cutesied up and sanitized out of circulation" is entirely absurd and unreasonable. /s
sjdrifter72 Don't you think you have no problems going on if that bothers you so much, bud? I mean, you can find all the original stuff if you look for it more than3 seconds
The sad thing about the missing Doctor Who episodes is that more information has come to light that it is almost 100% possible that some episodes are in the hands of collectors who have NO INTENTIONS of sharing with the rest of the world. Butts.
The problem is the way the BBC treats people, but if I had an episode that's missing (I wished I had) then I would gladly share it. Thankfully Mark Ayres saved all the audio/background tapes from a skip which included the interior sound of the Tardis.
It is because they fear losing those copies to the BBC permanently. These are technically property of the BBC, being that they were taken from the studio without permission and once they have them back, they are under no obligation to hand them over to the collector once finished with the data transfer.
That hasn't been BBC policy for a very long time - when the BBC started their publicly advertised Treasure Hunt roughly 20 years ago they made it clear that they would take copies and return the original films to the collector if required. This was certainly the case with the return of "The Lion" when it was returned - the film was returned to Bruce Purchase who sold it later on
I wouldn't be surprised. Both my mom and grandma have told me how, so my grandma was frightened of the evil queen in Snow White when she saw it as a very young, small child; and my mom was terrified of the wicked witch when she saw Wizard Of Oz as a small child. I saw both, probably between the age of 2-4 years old, and I don't remember being scared of either villain, if anything I just knew they were bad and part of the story. No, what terrified me at a young age, was the beginning of Scream..... I think my brother first rented it either in '97 or '98, so I was roughly 7-8 at the time.
another lost BBC episode from the early 50's, was notable because it was a live performance and during a bit where one of the actors was not on screen, He said that he did not feel well and he sat down in a chair. When someone came to tell him he was due to be back on screen in a minute, they discovered he had died. The other actors and the crew had to quickly come up with ways to tell the story without one of the characters. Because it was live, they could not just stop. They had to keep going.
I think the 1950s live airing of the Thomas story "Henry and the Tunnel" is one of the most interesting ones. It was a live broadcast of Hornby model trains, being controlled to go along with the story. In one part of the broadcast, a locomotive came off the tracks, so the person watching saw a hand come down in front of the camera to pick up the train, and put it back on the tracks. Unfortunately, there are no images or recordings of that video.
Hello! Even though this comment is old, the full episode was found and posted on Reddit. It has also been published to TH-cam. I uploaded it to my channel as well, and saved the episode to my computer in case it gets taken down
It's a real shame about the wicked witch of the west thing. I freaking hate parents that whine to tv stations about thier kids being scared. Just switch off the damn tv set and reassure them it's pretend. Aren't they just increasing the fear and intensity by reacting so strongly to the children being scared. They should just comfort them and laugh it off
I know this comment is old, but the full episode was found and posted to Reddit. Some TH-camrs have uploaded the episode. I also have it uploaded on my channel, and just in case, I have the episode saved to my computer in case it gets taken down
you know, I think I actually saw that Sesame Street episode when it aired..hearing about it and seeing those stills sure reminded me of something I saw when I was very little anyway...thanks for these, I'm enjoying this series!
I had the same feeling when I was young. I remembered seeing a blue Big Bird and all these years I thought I dreamed that. Now I realize it's from the first Sesame Street movie. There is another show that I also feel I dreamed when I was young but perhaps was a real show/movie. It was about this kid/teen who was trapped in a TV studio. I don't recall anything that happened in the show/movie but do remember the end where he's had enough and goes to his bed and wishes to be back home and, of course, it was all a dream... or something. He does end up back in the "real" world but I can't recall. I assume I dreamed this but who knows, it could be an actual show/movie and I just need to be reminded.
This reminds me of how many times I would tape over old stuff I recorded with newer stuff, only to regret it years later. Especially if I had ended up recording stuff that is nowhere to be found online. If only my child self had known better!
If you think that THIS video describes the tragedy of missing or erased tapes or kinescopes, pull up a chair. Remember the television series 'Captain Kangaroo'? From 1955-1984, almost 8,000 episodes aired on CBS. With the exception of about 30-35 episodes (some complete episodes, but mostly segments and fragments), the rest of the episodes were either erased, discarded or misplaced. Am I generalizing? No. I have been researching the series for thirty years. It's not as if we can't see 'Doctor Who' or 'Sesame Street' (although some episodes of 'Sesame Street', as I've read, were lost in a fire). Many of those episodes survive. Not so with the Captain.
Ask the BBC about a little show called The Avengers, it's even more fucked than Doctor Who is. Most of the Emma Peel era stuff survives, but before that, practically nothing.
I've never watched Captain Kangaroo since I was born in 03 and not at all during that time but my mom has recently brought it up. She said she remembered watching it as a little girl in the 60's, I would ask her more about it but it's likely she'd only remember bits and pieces. But she too was wondering what ever happened to it. I think she was trying to find some episodes but she never could.
Oh the hours I've spent watching all the Doctor Who reconstructions. Glorified slideshows (apart from the animated ones), but I'll happily take what I can get.
The most recent/largest discovery in 2013 was outstanding. Always crossing my fingers that some small rumor could, however unlikely, turn into another goldmine. Another excellent video!
Beatles footage of their performance was found last year and early this year, in Mexico, a woman had a box full of old film reels that she had bought at auction, and around 12 seconds was recovered. Following the announcement, further footage was found by someone who had film reels in their attic
How I recall both reading in my local Newspaper's TV section of how on Sesame Street they were going to have the episode of the Witch from the Wizard of Oz in which Oscar would be impossible about giving her back her broom back & as far as I recall I only saw the end when switching channels one afternoon I only saw the end with the Witch saying "Onward to Oz Broom, look no hands."Then the broom fell from the sky and when David caught it he started crying too.
I saw the Binya Binya spin off. It sucked. My family loved the hell of Gulla Gulla Island. I completely forgot the spinoff existed until now. Makes me wonder if my dad recorded it since he used to record all of the Nick Jr. programming for my sister.
GULLAH GULLAH ISLAND! i had completely forgotten about that until I saw the puppet, but hearing that song just... my entire heart melted, so much nostalgia for something i didnt even remember until now, like it was just locked away in the back of my mind
Thank goodness that fans recorded the audio of Doctor Who. It’s the reason we have some of the stories in animated form. Also, people recording off of tv on old vhs or Betamax is the reason why the Star Wars Holiday Special exists on TH-cam and at video dealers on the convention circuit
Another classic TV broadcast that may be lost to time: Joan Crawford's four appearances on the CBS soap opera "The Secret Storm" in 1968. She was filling in for her daughter (yes, it was Christina!) who was on the show and fell ill. By then the show was videotaped in color, and yet considering the big fuss over a legend like Miss Crawford being on a soap, those tapes (or even a kinescope!) has yet to appear. Audiotapes taken off the air exist, but no video footage. There's a rumor that at least one person may have a kinescope in his or her private collection......
While I am rather terrified of the Wicked Witch and would not have enjoyed that episode I believe (at the very least she's scary for her own right without the movie), I wonder a little bit if the reaction wasn't that of parents who may have grown up fearful of her. I know Mr Rogers also had her on with the idea of discussing make believe. This was actually a bit before the Sesame Street episode. I know the witch is merely an act and I've nothing against the actress, but it's the act that has the most effect.
I saw the Margaret Hamilton episode when it aired. I wish I remembered more about it. I do remember I thought it was cool, even though I was "too old" for Sesame Street by then (I would have been about 9; my siblings are much younger, and they watched it all the time). I didn't pay much attention tho - I had no idea how iconic it was.
Now this is my kind of lost media video not trying to be overly creepy or constantly smothering the screen in black not faking having a lower voice never trying to exaggerate I like that
Here's an interesting fact about one of the most famous motion pictures of all time, Gone With The Wind. While beautiful restorations have been repeatedly marketed, they aren't exact restorations. In 1954, as part of producing a widescreen re-release, a few shots were cropped slightly and cut into the original negative. So all copies made since, even the ones not formatted for widescreen, are missing a bit of the image. An original uncropped print may exist in China.
I like how this guy just updated the thumbnail to include a new screenshot of Sesame Street's Wicked Witch of the West. We've finally got a colored version of that famous screenshot!
Fantastic documentary. Another similar loss would be a couple of Laurel & Hardy silent shorts, which scores of reels were sent to theaters, used then either discarded or lost at Hal Roach Studios. To think, movies that many remembered the rest of their days would never be seen again.
Another one to add to the list, is the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, the only one that no longer exists. It was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. The TV studio had a fire a year or so later, which destroyed the master. While audio of the Contest is around, the only footage is around 30 secs of the winner's reprise that a German TV station has.
My mom actually saw the wicked witch episode and she told me it was a pretty good episode and everyone in her family watched and liked it, including her parents. My moms parents were shocked when they heard the episode was pulled.
Great video. So weird though to be watching and at 6:31 suddenly see a photo from a local convention. It took me a pause and a second look to be sure, but that's definitely the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City during a Salt Lake Comic Con/FanX.
I remember back when I had obtained a coveted workprint of the unaired, and banned episode of Ren and Stimpy, "Man's Best Friend". I was so proud to have gotten my hands on it, and it was my favorite episode for years, and I even helped spread it around to a few people by taping it onto other VHS tapes for a few fans that wanted to see it as well, and mailing it to them. Incidentally that's how it also ended up online as far as I'm aware. I even kept it locked up in a bottom dresser drawer under key and lock for years, watching it every so often. .............then Spike TV aired it several times, and Paramount included it on a DVD. It was a huge bummer that my copy was no longer considered to be quite as special and the value of it was gone. But I was happy to finally see it in better quality, and for everyone else of the mainstream R&S audience to get to see it, too. So I wasn't upset for long.
and as far as how I obtained it? Well, I don't want to go into too much detail, but let's say that I knew of a source that mentioned a certain disgruntled Spumco member did leak it around to them, when they were pissed that Nickelodeon refused to air it. I did not have the direct contact with said person or anything, and I can't claim that I did, but let's just say it was... ahem... passed along to me, as one of only about 3 copies at that point, and of the three or so that ended up in possession of a copy, I was the least inclined to just sit on it forever. I don't know if the other people I gave it to were the ones who leaked it into the internet or not, but I imagine that it was because of me, and I was/am totally ok with that.
Just an update, the full Wicked Witch of the West episode has been found! I have uploaded the full episode and many others have uploaded it as well. I also saved it to my computer in case it gets taken down. Big win for the lost media community!
I remember Ms. Hamilton's appearance on Mister Rogers and saw it when it aired and no one believed me until it showed up on TH-cam. Sounds like her Sesame Street appearance probably happened years earlier. I love your cutaways- it makes the vid very entertaining.
Hey Mark, they found the Sesame Street Wicked Witch of the West episode and it was uploaded to TH-cam in case you are interested in checking it out, maybe you can update this video with a found lost episode of Sesame Street
In the early 1970s, the BBC published novelizations of selected Doctor Who episode scripts. They include many of the lost episodes. I have not seen them in stores or online recently. My collection includes stories up to the Sylvester McCoy era.
It's super unfortunate that you still can't find the Wicked Witch episode, I really wish the CTW would release it as a tribute to the amazing Margret Hamilton
In the Netherlands we have lost an entire series " Kunt U mij de weg naar Hamelen vertellen, mijnheer " a famous Children series from the early 70's It met the same fate as the Dr Who serie's mentioned in your video. Just a few episodes and promo material survived. So hopefully some people have the lost episodes on Beta or VHS !!
There's a hungarian tv series, titled as "Gustav". It was a 120 episodes long cartoon, starting from the 1960's and it spreaded pretty much in the eastern block, because - if anyone takes a look at it ~ the characters didn't speak, no dubbing was necessary. Years ago, a lot of episodes were submitted here,on yt. But there are 10 episodes, which even I, a hardcore fan never got to see. The local film archive is just lazy to digitalize it, meaning it might just get lost. And I searched everywhere, but couldn't find the eps online, sadly. I wish one day someone just submitted them!
Also missing is the Christmas Day video of the soap opera Dark Shadow in 73 thru 77. While all other video is found and converted into dvd only the audio of that day was found and included on the dvd.
A guy who works for Sesame Street said that The Wicked Witch Episode is still in their database. He also said he would really like for the company too show it to the public one day.
Claudio Bizama they always seem to forget about the other 5 landings lol. It would be pretty bold of NASA to fake not only 1 but 5 landings and to never get caught. The Soviets would have done anything to expose it back then if they were faked.
One lost piece of footage from Australia is Bruce Gyngell's original introduction from when TV began on Sept. 16, 1956. While a recreation was made a year later, the original piece went out live and was never seen again.
i enjoyed your video, similar to the content in this video, I believe that Dopey spoke the words "I love you, or goodbye" to Snow White at the end of ithe Disney animated film Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs and this cut of the film has somehow disappeared since its theatrical release.
In addition to these few examples, it's relevant to point out that VERY little of local USA television broadcasting exists from the early years, starting in the late 1940s and early '50s. Most programs were broadcast live and were never filmed on 16mm movie film, or recorded on 2 inch videotape after it came into use in the late 1950s. So except for the published TV program listings and a few still photos, as seen here, you will never again see the local news, talk shows, dance shows, kids' shows, or any shows from the place where you grew up, especially if you're an old person now.
Great video. Reminds me of Fraggle Rock which has different live action bookends depending on where you lived. Here in the UK we had an old man and his puppet dog who lived in a lighthouse. The TV station that stored all the episodes, TVS, wiped many of the tapes to save money and I believe those are now lost forever.
@@writerpatrick I've since googled and discovered that some episodes exist on dvd, some from production tapes and most are recorded off the tv at the time. Only one episode is missing out of 96.
@@darthkurland I certainly hope so, Fraggle Rock was part of my childhood just like Sesame Street and Mister Rogers. Until two years ago, I had no idea that the bookend segments for Fraggle Rock were different depending on where in the world you lived.
That clip from Planet of the Apes is very appropriate for this topic. Conveys my feelings perfectly. Also, I believe that blameitonjorge got the opportunity to see the episode of Sesame Street with the Margaret Hamilton a little over a year ago. He might have some extra information about it.
I don't know if this fits into your narrative, but we erased stuff here in the U.S. as well. Johnny Carson was pissed when he found out that tapes from 1962 to 1972 were erased. The only reason some of them survived is that some were transferred onto film to be sent to the troops in vietnam, including the 3/6/69 telecast where dean martin and bob hope crash the show while johnny is interviewing george gobles.
The reason that we have only 96 episodes of Doctor Who and also many, many more classic programmes (Dads Army and Z Cars for example) missing believed wiped is that it was a slow process of deciding which tapes were commercially sellable. The day they went to check how much of Doctor Who was still in the archives, the cans with all the episodes of 'The Daleks' were taped up to be destroyed.
Joe Wilson you might want to ask those at Apple Corps about that footage. That’s the Beatles’ company and those people would know about whether or not the footage still exists.
I saw the Witch episode on Sesame Street. It was aired twice that day, once at noon and once at 5:30pm on PBS in Boston. If I remember correctly, she met several of the "street" characters (ie. not Ernie or Bert) and had a few quick interactions with them in between mini-segments as usual. The NASA data-tapes are likely at (believe it or not) the McDonald's (now defunct building) there. The business failed (amazingly, so few McDonald's fail) and is used as a tape-storage.
I saw the Wicked Witch episode and it gave me witch nightmares for months. it may have only aired in the US once but it got rebroadcast in a Canada 1-2 times more. there may be a copy of the episode in the CBC archives as the Canadian version was altered to show english and french canadian segments in the show.
Well, I guess that's sort of what happened in the episode. I was ten and remember it. The witch was showing off to the viewing audience, breaking the fourth wall, so to speak, and said, "look, no hands!" with the broom, so that was how she lost it. David was the one who either caught it or found it, and Maria was who he spoke to. The witch came to Sesame Street and demanded her broom back and David wouldn't give it to her until she said 'please' so the witch left and changed herself into a sweet, little old lady, ta-dah, Margaret Hamilton. This was when I realized she had been the witch as well, and it was truly like the same character from the '39 movie. So Margaret walks into the store, asks David if she can have the broom and David made her say please. Don't recall, but don't think he did, if David knew it was the witch or not. She goes outside, turned into the witch and took off. She's flying again, did the "look, no hands" bit again and dropped the broom again. David is standing in front of the store with Maria and the broom falls in his hands. He mimics crying on his shoulders and she pats him on the shoulder to comfort him. Don't recall her interacting with any of the muppets.
That's sad about the wicked witch Sesame episode as that would have been so cool. Someone needs to dig that out and release it, it has to be somewhere.
Honeysuckle Creek , is now a site of foundations as it was demolished in the late 80's but has a walking tour tourists can use , as the surrounding area is in the Namadji National Park , the Tracking Dish and equipment was relocated to the newer Tibinbilla Deep Space Complex and remains in use today , As does Parkes Deep Space Observatory . Both have visitor facilities and tours
Doctor Who did lose a lot of footage. I own a DVD of all four parts of this one episode that had the second doctor. It has two full audio and video episodes and two audio and pictures.
The Superbowl would have been on my list. I read somewhere that if you somehow had a copy from even recording from a t.v with an 8mm camera, you just won the lottery.
There's exactly *one* episode of the 1,225-episode run of "Dark Shadows" that is lost. It takes place in the final season, and contains the offscreen marriage of Bramwell Collins (Jonathan Frid) and Daphne Stoddard (Kate Jackson). The episode was entirely lost until a fan turned up a copy of the soundtrack, which has been combined with on-set stills, added narration, and a couple of scenes from other episodes to "reconstruct" it for the syndication and home-video packaging. Missing show I'd like to see is the single aired episode of "Turn On", George Schlatter's followup to "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In", which was canceled halfway through its premiere. As I understand it, the episode exists but has never been made accessible to the public since its original broadcast.
I have always watched Doctor Who since I was a kid and I remember getting the first season at our local video rental place. Many episodes were solely audio because the video was never recovered. It was wild
Doctor Who’s missing 97 episodes are a MASSIVE oversight that had a lot more significance. Those serials were majority effect THREE Doctors worth of content. There is also the significance that the longest running Sci-Fi show in history had such poor production and support from the BBC to begin with. *before the trekkies come after me Doctor Who premiered in 1963, 3 years before Star Trek’s short 3 season run compared to Doctor Who’s first 26 year run then reboot in 05 now lasting a further 18 years. I’ve dealt with the attacks before so don’t even with me. As it stands Doctor Who was created with almost no support, had a paltry 2000 pound budget, had a literal cardboard set, and they were not allowed reshoots. Hence why William Hartnell’s performance suffers as his health declines and the regeneration mechanic was introduced. In fact that episode of “The Tenth Planet” is missing. One of the most important parts of Doctor Who history is MISSING. 4 of Hartnell’s serials are completely missing and Patrick Troughton’s first two serials as the Second Doctor are also completely missing. This show was produced by a woman, had an Indian immigrant director, and a Canadian creator. In. The. 60s. Verity was the youngest and only female producer at the BBC, Waris was heavily discriminated against, and Sydney was an outsider for being Canadian. The biggest cultural phenomenon of science fiction to ever be created and it was treated so poorly. It’s amazing that we’ve recovered what we have, but the 97 missing episodes are still a historical tragedy.
I remember watching the Binyah Binyah TV Show when I was a kid because that’s the week I was sick and didn’t go to school until that Friday. So by luck, I got to watch almost all the episode that week and never saw the show again afterwards
It be cool if there was a video on KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. There is a deep story to it from Ace's stunt double to Peter's entire script voice by another person.

I started writing/researching this video ages ago, and thought it was about time to finally get it out! I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did digging into them!

It was Terry Gilliam who did that!
Yeah - Terry Gilliam had heard the BBC wanted to wipe MPFC entirely, thinking it had no historical value.
If it had been Judy Garland as Dorothy then it would certainly been a different story!
@@anthonyellis987 especially since she was dead at the time
Yes, I remember both episodes. The SS one didn't scare me because of how she earlier explained on Mr. Rogers that it's all pretend.
Margaret Hamilton also fought for Judy Garland. She told Judy Garland Mother and the Studio to STOP drugging her and STOP working her so hard.
It’s honestly amazing that so many of the originally missing Doctor Who episodes have been recovered, and some of them recently, like Enemy of the World was rediscovered in 2013. Some guy just found it in a cupboard in Nigeria

The Beatles almost played their aged selves on Doctor Who? What a pop-culture moment that would've been.
You decide....
.
Really? When was that? Never heard about this.
"....would've been."....as in,it didn't happen.
I understand it never happened. I just don't believe it was even a thing. Never heard anybody remotely related to the boys even suggesting the band would appear on the tv show. would make a great fan boy dream but not reality. What year was this supposed to have planned?
I've no idea....I suggest you go to their home page and ask the guys who made this.
So you're saying the BBC was so into throwing shit away we can only see the Beatles clips they threw away inside a Doctor Who episode they threw away?
rattyeely that's inception
Nobody loved throwing stuff away like the BBC loved throwing stuff away in the 60s and 70s
That's very stupid thinking on their part.

She didn't have the make-up on, just the costume.
Holy carp the BBC was savage back in the day! They would have burned down The Library of Alexandria for the land space.
They probably had ancestors who did that.
Seriously, how do you tape over something as historic as the moon landing? Even back then you knew how historic it was. What a major oversight.
I guess it was a matter of Boss said do it, so you do it, or you lose your job.
you're right, why would they get rid of the best quality evidence of something so historic?
really makes ya think....
probably stolen to order.
Well... tape was expensive back then.
Boomer parents are the worst.
But that same year 1976, Hamilton appeared as The Witch in The Paul Lynde Halloween Special and nobody complained about that! I mean what the hell?
m.th-cam.com/video/7YBhUELFwwM/w-d-xo.html
sjdrifter72 it's more like because they were racist but there's not much we could really do
sjdrifter72 Don't you think you have no problems going on if that bothers you so much, bud? I mean, you can find all the original stuff if you look for it more than3 seconds
The Sesame Street episode has been found! I repeat, IT HAS BEEN FOUND! WOO-HOO! Yeah, baby!
These are technically property of the BBC, being that they were taken from the studio without permission and once they have them back, they are under no obligation to hand them over to the collector once finished with the data transfer.
i hate the BBC for erasing the tapes
@@RobotGooseStudios Such boneheads.
That hasn't been BBC policy for a very long time - when the BBC started their publicly advertised Treasure Hunt roughly 20 years ago they made it clear that they would take copies and return the original films to the collector if required. This was certainly the case with the return of "The Lion" when it was returned - the film was returned to Bruce Purchase who sold it later on
I bet a year’s salary that the parents, not the kids, were frightened by the Wicked Witch episode of Sesame Street
The video itself implied that the kids were actually fascinated while the parents acted like scaredy cats lol
I will take that 156 dollars then
Clickbait Steve is that really necessary?
@@BrendanJSmith Your icons are super similar so I thought you were the same people and I had to doubletake, haha.
another lost BBC episode from the early 50's, was notable because it was a live performance and during a bit where one of the actors was not on screen, He said that he did not feel well and he sat down in a chair. When someone came to tell him he was due to be back on screen in a minute, they discovered he had died. The other actors and the crew had to quickly come up with ways to tell the story without one of the characters. Because it was live, they could not just stop. They had to keep going.
unclepatrick2 I remember hearing about that - I think it was talked about in another YT video I watched some time back.
Speaking of Thomas, another lost episode is the original pilot version of "Down the Mine". Only one fragment of footage from the pilot remains.
@Yellow Rose Productions I heard about this too. It was broadcast on BBC in 1953. Since they would wipe old tapes, it’s likely that might’ve happened.
It was aired live, so the chance of them taping it was very low.
That's called the Sad Story of Henry.
2020: Kids are too sheltered nowadays.
1976: Help! My child’s been traumatised by Sesame Street!
@David Santamaria Karen Soccermom. That's her name. Not very imaginative, but people like her think imagination is too evil.
Probably moms being stupid.
Maybe we should start giving corporal punishment to bad parents
It rained in mr. Hooper's store? 😆😆😆
They should just comfort them and laugh it off
m.th-cam.com/video/7YBhUELFwwM/w-d-xo.html
I was never scared of The Wicked Witch of the West. I actually found her facinating!
I know this comment is old, but the full episode was found and posted to Reddit. Some TH-camrs have uploaded the episode. I also have it uploaded on my channel, and just in case, I have the episode saved to my computer in case it gets taken down
Man I love Lost Media! Something about it fascinates me.
Evalon Games Same here. I'm constantly on Lost Media Wiki
I feel the same. There's something eerie, uncanny, and so interesting about things disappearing never to be seen again.
Evalon Games agreed..... it’s also quite creepy too 😂
Bless the hoarder and tv geeks that save things for nostalgia and keep childhood memories

Imagine if you were the dude that accidentally erased the Moon Landing tapes ??
Sammy Lane then I would receive a medal of Honor from the grand lodge of Freemasonry
Isaac Marwell - yes yes yes
Accidentally?
It was erased because the moon landing was faked idiots
If you believe that moon landing malarkey, I've got a bridge to sell you.
you know, I think I actually saw that Sesame Street episode when it aired..hearing about it and seeing those stills sure reminded me of something I saw when I was very little anyway...thanks for these, I'm enjoying this series!
Matt C I recorded some Teachers Pet episodes back in the day but lost the tapes, then I find out most of the episodes are lost. Smh
Same dude, same.
@@gator9339 Teacher's Pet and the movie is on Disney+
I have a friend who taped over his old childhood tapes with episodes of The Simpsons, aka the most easily available show in the world.
I had no clue so much Avengers material was missing. This must have been the Avengers Initiative before Fury asked Tony Stark..
J/k Loved Emma Peel!
Some were dumped in a river.
Not sure if you're right, but maybe that's why Episode 12 is missing.
Oh the hours I've spent watching all the Doctor Who reconstructions. Glorified slideshows (apart from the animated ones), but I'll happily take what I can get.
Hoping one day you'll get to see the episodes as originally intended!
Well, you made me literally LOL. I grew up on Gullah but never saw Binyah Binyah aside from this one episode I found.
If he did record it could probably make money off it..
The first 10 years of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show was sadly wiped in a similar fashion. A huge loss for late night TV fans like myself.
Please do more Lost Media videos! The topic really interests me and gives me and eerie vibe
One of my bucket list accomplishments I'm HOPING to fulfill is finding a copy of a lost film/television broadcast/episode.
Tl;dr: Don't erase anything dammit. ^^
Exactly.
make 16mm copies from the video tape ,play it once and then wipe the videotape..and then archive
I completely forgot that Gullah Gullah Island existed until now. Nostalgia-overload. 😱
I did, too. At ,least She appeared later on MR.ROGERS'S NEIGHBORHOOD.
3:08 Aaaaaannndd... Now I got that song stuck in my head for the rest of the week
Now this is my kind of lost media video not trying to be overly creepy or constantly smothering the screen in black not faking having a lower voice never trying to exaggerate I like that
Gullah Gullah Island was filmed at Universal Studios. I watched a taping of it once when I visited Florida some twenty odd years ago.
He’s sounding a lot more energetic than usual.
The sesame st video was finally found 2 days ago, it’s on TH-cam!!
Oh and quick fun fact, apparently Margaret Hamilton used to be a kindergarten teacher, so it makes sense that she was a very loving person 🥰
I can almost hear the moon landing deniers in the distance lol
Depiste the fact that there are other 5 missions with lunar landings.
Claudio Bizama they always seem to forget about the other 5 landings lol. It would be pretty bold of NASA to fake not only 1 but 5 landings and to never get caught. The Soviets would have done anything to expose it back then if they were faked.
The US and Russia could be working together to fake space, and present to the public as competitors.
fake ass moonlanding, of course NASA would lose their video tapes. Its not like they were that important anyway
Just tell them that they hired Stanley Kubrick to direct the footage and that he was such a perfectionist that they actually had to go to the moon.

"Accidentally erased" while these things do happen, i doubt that was truly the fate of the sesame street episode. More like destroyed.
It's possible there's a copy still in the Jim Henson Company Archives.
@@writerpatrick I've since googled and discovered that some episodes exist on dvd, some from production tapes and most are recorded off the tv at the time. Only one episode is missing out of 96.
writerpatrick you’re right. If anyone still has a copy of that footage, it would be in the Jim Henson Archives.
Damn, if there was ever that small sliver of possibility that the live performance were recovered, I would kill to see it. I'm such a big fan
I remember that episode vividly. It scared the hell out of me.
The ABC in Australia did this with a lot of early countdown episodes. This show aired around 7 years before MTV.
Surely there's gotta be a few copies hidden away in Australia? Wouldn't surprise me.
There is another banned Sesame Street episode from the early 90s about divorce. And yes, I remember Gullah Gullah Island reasonably well.
Snuffy's parents get divorced I think it was.
I’d be curious to know about that one. By the 90’s, divorce wasn’t exactly taboo anymore. Lots of kids I went to school with had divorced parents.
It wasn’t even aired
This makes me tear up.Why am I watching this at 11:00.Also,the Polywogs gave me nightmares as a kid,as I only saw them very late at night
She was my favorite character ig Oz when i was a kid I was never afraid, just facinated...
Supposedly the Beatles TOTP performance does still exist in the hands of private collectors, but the quality is said to be very poor.
Interesting, I'll have to look into it!
What an interesting topic! I appreciate the amount of effort you spent researching this: please make more episodes like this one! 😀
I read somewhere that if you somehow had a copy from even recording from a t.v with an 8mm camera, you just won the lottery.
people ask you: "if you had a time machine where would you go?"
I then direct them to this video
Very cool what you revealed about the Appollo 11 mission.
they actually had a private screening of episode 847 and someone secretly recording it and uploading it to youtube.
Yup, I actually have it lol. Would love to do a follow up someday
It was wild
You’re channel is a major binge! Keep making more content! 🎥
the lost episode of sesame street is found in June 2022
