As an Italian (I was 9-years old when I saw it for the first time - on ITV, on an early spring Thursday night in Watford), I was mesmerized by Tatiana Romanova, and became extremely curious about Russia, not knowing that Tatiana was an Italian born just 200 km from my own birthplace. The fascination lasted, and it is my opinion that beauties the equal, or the greater, of Tatiana Romanova (aka Daniela Bianchi) can be admired in great numbers in Moscow and Saint Petersburg
Wonderful movie - and a great ‘making of’ video. So glad that so many of the movie’s professionals/creators were interviewed before they passed. They were excellent! Miss them and wish the newer Bond movies were as great as this early one.
This short documentary is stupendous .From Russia With Love has always been my favorite Bond film. Such a tremendous cast who all played so well together, and the music score by John Barry was perfect.
Pedro Armendáriz was such a great character actor. Truly memorable and brilliant as the first of the archetypical "colorful Bond ally". You see similar characters in other Bond films played by John Rhys-Davies, Robbie Coltrane and Giancarlo Giannini
Thank you for posting this wonderful BTS doc for a classic Bond film! As someone who worked on many big-budget Hollywood films in the 90s and beyond, I can say that the number of problems they faced in production on _FRWL_ is the rule rather than the exception. As a crew you're constantly dealing with significant "emergencies" and having to come up with immediate solutions. It's part of what makes that business both crazy and exhilarating. Wonderful to hear the perspective of several crew members and I had no idea about what was going on with Pedro Amendariz. I'm so glad he was able to finish the shoot and that was extremely kind of the production team to back him on this. Moving up all his scenes like that must have come at a great cost to the producers but his role is so great. What a wonderful legacy to leave! Also loved hearing from the editor Peter Hunt. Even though I grew up with the Bond films, I didn't see _On Her Majesty's Secret Service_ until I was in my early 30s and I was astonished at how great the action sequences were in that film. Only later did I learn that Peter Hunt directed it!
I love this film, it has such pace and speed in it, you dare not turn away for a second in case you miss something. I was lucky enough to work at Pinewood for a few months during production for a visitor attraction, it was brilliant to see parts of the building and recognise them from films I had seen. One day one of the later Bond cars was parked outside my office with the giant skis sticking out of the wondows. It was a surreal experience.
The joke editor Peter Hunt pulled is hilarious. I am also a film editor and I sometimes pull "pranks" like that with the directors. It takes a very jovial and secure relationship to be able to do this kind of joke within the team. Nice to see they had that bond.
Yeh, one of the best James bond films, definitely in the top three with goldfinger and OHMSS.... Connery makes it great and of course Robert Shaw in the best fight scene ever filmed.
This one, Thunderball, and Goldfinger were my favorites - mostly because they stuck closely to the original Fleming novels, which I'd read at a very young age.
It is the best cast of any Bond film. Even the most minor of support characters are memorable. Bond's driver, the hotel staff, the opponent in the chess game played by Peter Madden.
@MikesMysteryMachine - Well Done ! "From Russia with Love" has always been my All - Time Favorite 'Bond Film' ... If by Nothing else Armendariz will always be remembered by Two Films; John Ford's " 3 Godfathers" (with John Wayne & Harry Carey Jr.) & "From Russia with Love" with His elegant presense.
When one thinks of all the crappy accents that actors give to villainous roles, it always gave me pleasure to see Vladek Sheybal. His voice oozed sinister menace.
Why is the video squished? I loved everything about this film. I was in high school when it came out... I couldn't wait 'til "Goldfinger" was released! Gonna go listen to Matt Munro's theme song now.
First Book I read - No idea at the time a series of Movies were going to be made, but thought this would make a great a Film and then when released Dr No queued up for hours to get in to the Cinema !
I remember as a ten year old kid seeing stills of the helicopter chase scene in LIFE magazine. Then and for many years after I thought James Bond was a real spy.
God, I'm so tired of Millennials and Gen Z ranking James Bond films, often leaving any Connery films from their top ten. They have the wrong metrics. You need to go back to the start, understand the Cold War (JB served in WW2 - it's in the books), understand the momentum that Bond films generated. OHMSS was the last great Bond film, the rest is circus. FRWL is so superior - I saw it when I was 8 years old. Always felt that Daniella Bianchi was the most beautiful Bond girl. The camp fight is unparalleled in tension and excitement, the Barry score is riveting. The scene where Bond sweeps his hotel for bugs with the music dialled up to 11 always gave me goosebumps. So much to love with this movie.
All the ladies were magnificent. No tattoos or swearing, well dressed and drop dead gorgeous. Yet untouched by rabid bra burning feminism. Gosh I miss the '60s.
My favorite Bond. Less of the gimmicks, more story. Connery was superb, (as always). Shaw was a really excellent heavy. Lotte Lenya, superbly weird and menacing. And my all time favorite Bond girl, Martine Beswick. Goldfinger was good, but FRWL is cinema perfection.
Sean was/is my ‘bond’ for many reasons but because I ❤the 60’s as a complete decade. The order of release was supposed to be Thunderball Live and Let Die From Russia with Love My favourite is FRWL and it was Sean’s also Why my favourite Well First hearing about Russians/ SPECTRE The Cuban Missile Crisis just 6-7 months prior - felt more spyish The location of Istanbul and the Bosphorus Back in the early 60’s Turkey was not really a holiday destination for many like my late parents. They no way could afford to holiday ‘abroad’ so when they saw this film it was pure escapism.
This extremely sad what the women had to go through to get the part… growing up and maturing is a sad thing… a love scene where you dont even have Sean as bond and have some 60 year old creep… sick
I'm not a fan of this film. I don't know why, but it doesn't resonate with me. In many ways it feels more Hitchcock than Bond. It learned somewhat from Dr. No, but it nowhere near as iconic or grand as Goldfinger. Maybe it's because I've never read the book, but the plot is not that exciting and there are way more interesting characters in the series. I guess there's Kerim Bay and the title theme, but there's just not much that resonates with me.
These 60s movies are still nice to watch, despite all the freemason stuff in them. Now 007 is dead. Hope they never revive him in any way with a new actor.
It’s amazing the amount of problems they had behind the scenes. Half the movie makers not available. The the helicopter crash Peter Ameoratti dying yet the film took the world by storm. Brilliant 👍👍
In the novel, the character of Rosa Klebb is described as “The ugliest woman in the World.” In the movie, she is played by Lotte Lenya, who was in her youth very beautiful. Lenya, of course, is also known for her recording of her husband, Kurt Weil’s composition, “Mack the Knife.”
All of the comments are spot on. The reception of this second film cannot be exaggerated. I have a print of an artist's rendering of a fictitious movie poster. Beautiful adaptation. The train car fight was also revolutionary for its time. The commitment of both actors is formidable and not replicated in newer films. Never mentioned is the brutal sequel on screen battle between these same stars in a completely different context. Please view Robin and Marian which is a marvelous take on the Robin Hood mythology. Of note is the brutal staged sword battle between Connery's R. Hood and Robert Shaw's Sheriff of Nottingham. Both staged battles are unique. It is best to view both on Blu-ray. Terrence Young who directed both films was a WWII spy master and "ran" the infamous codenamed Zigzag Eddie Chapman criminal/burglar as a triple agent spy against the Nazis. Several books have been written about this unique criminal and one very romanticized movie Triple Cross which was also directed by Terrance Young. I am certain that he and spy master Isn Fleming had much professional contact during the war and could have shared fascinating stories. Real life is more fascinating sometimes than movie fantasies.
Came out of the cinema, after watching this brilliant film, on 22nd of November 1963, got a taxi to my cricket club to get in before 10.30, which allowed us to drink till midnight - got told President Kennedy had been shot. I then ran to my local Catholic Church to receive confession for the oncoming nuclear war - the priests told me to come back the following day.
I personally find Daniela Bianchi looks better with short hair. Very beautiful woman.
To me the best Bond girl ever. Painfully beautiful.
@@Stonecutter334 Agreed ... None Better !
Way better than the present day Strong Female Protagonist with the Message😂
Absolutely timelessly beautiful.

Sean Connery IS the REAL James Bond
The one and only.
What made you think there were any others?
He was never a field agent
Robert Shaw as Grant was a Superb villain and opponent for Bond, one of the greatest of all Bond antagonists!!

The music is superb!!!
Ahead of its time music is next level even now
Yeh, one of the best James bond films, definitely in the top three with goldfinger and OHMSS.... Connery makes it great and of course Robert Shaw in the best fight scene ever filmed.
My favorite Bond film, it's a real spy adventure thriller. It's very classy and entertaining. Connery is at his best and most charming.
That was fantastic ! The women were beautiful !
Oh,yes! Wonderful 😮
Yes they were, no botox, no fake tips! such a great time to be alive.
This film is Genius i feel like on repeat but every time you go back to it you love it for another reason
I've read all the books and seen all the films and imo this was the best of both.
This one, Thunderball, and Goldfinger were my favorites - mostly because they stuck closely to the original Fleming novels, which I'd read at a very young age.
All the early Bond movies were great because they were true to Flemings books.
It is the best cast of any Bond film. Even the most minor of support characters are memorable. Bond's driver, the hotel staff, the opponent in the chess game played by Peter Madden.

The movie that is closest to Ian Fleming's original vision of James Bond.
No mention of Matt Monroe singing the title song. God Bless
This is really cool! Thanks for the post!!

The great Vladek Sheybal : archetypal generic East European baddy . !

This is easily the best of the Bond film. It follows the plot of the original novel. And Lotte Lenya totally
sells the movie.
Great documentary!
I didn’t see a credit for the narrator, but it had to be John Steed himself.
Narrator credit at 1:18 and yes it is Patrick Macnee..
Not forgetting the title song - shame this vid ended with the instrumental, Matt Munro's voice was epic.
I saw it as a 15 year old - unbelievable - still the best most realistic Bond movie of them all.
