Hey! I've got one of those except I bought it new in 1962 when I was 17 and it came with a Bigsby. I don't play it much because I've gone off to jazz-land but when I plug it in I'm always blown away by the authority of the tone in the thing and the amazing comfort of the neck..
this sounds so goddamn good. like, it sounds AMAZING and really ringy and chimey and sustainy clean, but it also sounds really good through the tonemaster. this is like one of the best sounding videos you've done, i think. it makes me really want an sg but i know nothing i could afford would sound anything like this!
@bungmasterteddybear it is indeed a whammy bar but you unfold it and instead of an up and down motion actuating the tremolo, it's a side to side motion. i tried it before we shot and it knocked it out of tune but next time we'll try it out at the end of the vid.

@SixStringHarmonies it's all about the wood . The particular batch of hardwood used by the manufacturer in a given yr . The grain of the wood and a number of factors make it impossible to duplicate it exactly
you are totally correct. it was an effort to modernize the les paul by relieving weight, and improving comfortablility and playablity with the new sleeker body shape. also the early models had those vibrato systems on them, like this one, and some had 3 pickups. this was an attempt to recreate the success of the strat and appeal to more progressive players, hence the 3 pups, whammy, and sleeker body. les wasnt a fan so yeah, they called it sg (solid guitar).
If I remember correctly Les Paul did not designed the Les Paul. The only input he had was he wanted trapezoid inlays. It was Ted McCarty that designed Les Paul and I believe he also designed the SG, Flying V and Explorer as well. And he gets no credit whatsoever.
Amen to not having to play what other people play on a type of guitar! I have a gretsch hollowbody and when I feel like it, I crank up the gain and treble and play ac/dc!
I definitely understand that the tone master is a magic amp. And i know you guys get tons of questions asking "Where do i get one of those?!" i was wondering if there's a cheap alternative, or even if Phil has a suggestion to a maybe not exact, but close alternative. But none the less great vids americana dudes. and phil always rippin
@MrTomZombie i ALWAYS use the bad monkey overdrive but just for solos so what you're hearing the rest of the time is just that amp. also... i have a Ultimate Attenuator Pro that sucks the juice from the head for rhythm volume and with a footswitch bypasses it for full volume for a solo boost.
@keineahnung1001 it depends on if you need tweakability of tone or if you need a guitar that can handle radical playing. if you play a lot, all the time, get a guitar with a neck shape you like and a tone you want. if you play someone elses songs or want to achieve a particular sound, get a combo amp with built in effects.
should have done some black keys with that neck pickup into the tonemaster with the gain on like 2. some slide also would be nice i bet phil plays slide really well
@PBANDSNOW He explains it pretty clearly. They changed the design of the les paul to the SG style, then when the les paul came back in 68 they produced both, called the traditional design the les paul and the SG style the SG to differentiate them. So, it's a les paul, because in 1962 the Les Paul was the SG style.
i absolutly love you phil xD You couldnt possibly poke me in the direction of a tab or a video demo of that air hockey champion song? im really feelin it
have you ever thought of playing the AC30 distorted? that SG would sound amazing like that, especially if you were still playing with your fingers; and why do you never play Beautiful Apartment? that song is awesome!!
@PBANDSNOW The SG was originally a redesigned version of the Les Paul, The first few years that the SG came out, there was no "Les Paul" because the SG was the Les Paul (Les Paul Solid Guitar) but Les Paul didn't like the SG so they took his name off and just called it the SG.
Is it possible that someone might have lost the SG truss rod cover and replaced it with a Les Paul one? I have no doubt that FrettedAmericana is accurate, but they look exactly the same.
I wish I were as positive as Phil X. I need this guy to follow me around all the time and keep me in an upbeat mood.
oh man that sound with the neck pickup AMAZING
Four fingers and a thumb to play the same note. Genius.
These videos are the best guitar thing on TH-cam.
The sound of Phil playing that Guitar through That Amp is the sound I hear in my head when I think perfect tone... That guitar is INCREDIBLE!!!
Hey! I've got one of those except I bought it new in 1962 when I was 17 and it came with a Bigsby.
I don't play it much because I've gone off to jazz-land but when I plug it in I'm always blown away by the authority of the tone in the thing and the amazing comfort of the neck..
total crackpot, great player, great performer. Phil is great!!!
So Phil X is pretty much my idol. He inspires me to keep playing and to better my playing and to keep music fun. Thanks Phil! :D

Man I wish I could play like this
Les Paul Standards were build from 1957/58-1960 and from 1968 onward. LPSGs were build from 1961-1963 and from 1963 onward as SGs.
Phil! I love add 9 chords or which ever is just 1,3,5,9 without the 7. So please when ever you want do them then do them!
When Ever I see your Videos Im Always Drawn to that Lucille in the Corner.... that guitar Rocks !!
Phil X does the Best demo's on youtube hands down with out any form of doubt of competition and yes I made that redundant
such a great voice.
I love this guy
This guy is a legend!
Some people are just born to be able to play. Not many can
@bungmasterteddybear

@Kreason95 -how can anyone HATE the gibson sg?? it's a very lovable guitar.
@keineahnung1001 Guitar for me is the most important. Guitar will affect how you play more. Amp will affect tone more.
great demo , Phil is one of those guys who make your day =)
I DO NOT want the tabs....I need to know which COFFEE you drink!!! LOVE watching you play and sing....great rock voice!!!
me too man what a great tone that was.
4:05 Oh...My.....Gosh......best guitar I've ever heard
bout time you guys gave phil a mic so he didnt have to shout !
keep up the good work ^_^
@PBANDSNOW go to our website and read the full description which gives you the history of how this guitar developed. It's worth a read...thanks.
@SixStringHarmonies it's all about the wood . The particular batch of hardwood used by the manufacturer in a given yr . The grain of the wood and a number of factors make it impossible to duplicate it exactly
I love this guy!

e troppo bravo phil a un modo di suonare tutto al naturale e molto personale poi con le sg la padronanza e unica
Oh wow oh wow I love that guitar!
dude the other day i played and 62, sg. 2 p90s and a wraparound bridge. amazing
I have always wanted an SG!

that's the reason why People say SG's are Les Paul's "brothers"
By the way man you are an awesome musician
@XecronDeathstorm That was the song Up Here by Powder. He showed how to play that part in the video at 8:07.
those harmonics up by the bridge pickup are also used to play the intro to how its made
Nothin like an SG, I LOVE mine ! !
Amen to not having to play what other people play on a type of guitar! I have a gretsch hollowbody and when I feel like it, I crank up the gain and treble and play ac/dc!
got mine in either 2004 or 2005, best guitar ever.
Way to work in "American Woman" as much as possible! I never get tired of that solo!
I love this guy! HE'S AWESOME!!
@bryanrocksDean read the description Bro
@XecronDeathstorm I think it's the one Phil played in the 'second lesson' called Up Here by his band Powder.
@PBANDSNOW its a sg with a les paul truss rod cover and the pickups are the same
nice crunch tone
I definitely understand that the tone master is a magic amp. wooooohohho guys!
I can see a couple of Jazzmasters on the background!
I'll be waiting...
@zombiegaara The lightness bit might be true, but SG stands for Solid Guitar, not Super Guitar
I love everything about this guitar, it fricken' rocks!! :D
i swear Phil, you were born with a guitar in your hands
hey wuz up phil! just thought id let you know you are my FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER!!!! anyway ya you and Jade Puget!
The Beatle's George Harrison played an SG a similiar date to this one during 65' and 66', used on songs like "Paperback Writer" and "Rain"
"In this case it is AC/DC!"^^ ahaha love that guy man SG kicks asses... ;)
Wow, that has a great tone! And that crazy whammy bar. But dang it doesn't sound $26,000 good. But that's not the only reason you get it, I guess.
i just love this guy xD

HAhahha 4:26 "TONEMASTER BABAAAYY!" Phil X you can melt my face any day.
@Kido4Life yeah... i'm looking all over the web for info/sounds on these. phil should demonstrate how that thing works! PLEASE!?
should have done some black keys with that neck pickup into the tonemaster with the gain on like 2. some slide also would be nice i bet phil plays slide really well
@61SGman BUMMER! Us either right now ;)
OMG WHEN HE SWITCHED OVER TO THE TONEMASTER UNLEASH THE BEAST
@PBANDSNOW
He explains it pretty clearly. They changed the design of the les paul to the SG style, then when the les paul came back in 68 they produced both, called the traditional design the les paul and the SG style the SG to differentiate them.
So, it's a les paul, because in 1962 the Les Paul was the SG style.
@Fiddstx what kinda question is that? The guitar of course!
you should do a review of the gibson les paul studio.
i absolutly love you phil xD
You couldnt possibly poke me in the direction of a tab or a video demo of that air hockey champion song? im really feelin it
@TolikRyumin i think it is the esp sg style he uses with the powder and the drills. i dnt know if i am correct

have you ever thought of playing the AC30 distorted? that SG would sound amazing like that, especially if you were still playing with your fingers; and why do you never play Beautiful Apartment? that song is awesome!!

Phil X made me call up my guitar teacher and start taking lessons again. Internet high five for Phil X.
@TolikRyumin its a les paul junior .. an old one dunno witch year .. :)
HEY PHIL! can you show how to play "talk you off the edge" by the drills? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! ROCK ON!

Красавец. Во жжоот
!!!
someday please someone use the sideways trem no one ever shows it i dont even know how it works
Phil has got a fucking awesome voice, especially on Hell's Bells
such a crazy guitar-god :D
You are an amusing fellow. Then again, being around all those guitars all day would make me giddy as hell too! But I can't play as well as you do :(
Is it possible that someone might have lost the SG truss rod cover and replaced it with a Les Paul one? I have no doubt that FrettedAmericana is accurate, but they look exactly the same.
Oh, I have this guitar!
phil '' x '' your awesome !!!! your videos all ways make crack me up !!! how dose the trem bar work on that guitar ?

Phil X, wants us to not always play the Gibson SG because of AC/DC , but you know its the only band that can inspire this guitar
