I have had it...I call it travellers fatigue. It hit me after 3 and a half months. My son has also had it after a few months. He said to find a place where you can stay on your own, only leave to get food and when you start to feel bored then start again. As an older person myself I enjoy your videos and I really hope you get through this and find a solution for you. It's OK to change plans, as you know. Please take care and put your health first...

Hey-O Stu! You're right! It simply is what it is and people deal with these things as they come in their own ways.
As an enjoyer of your videos, I enjoy the more raw nature of your editing, your traveling, and your commentary along the way, so first and foremost. We do appreciate documenting and sharing your travels with your growing audience.
That said, as a "planner" I was hoping you would slow things down a touch for your own sake. I could be completely incorrect, but it seems like you were on a mission to get back to the UK by a particular month if not a particular season. Spend as long as you like in areas / countries that you're enjoying and less time in areas / countries that you aren't. The Philippines as an example, as wonderful as that country and it's people are, it didn't seem like it was the best for 1 whole month of your travels when 2 or 3 weeks would have sufficed.
Give yourself a touch more time for preparation, take time off when you need, and if you're feeling a touch homesick (especially during the end of year Holidays) perhaps watch some UK TH-cam content to see if that scratches the itch so to speak.
Thanks again for what you do! Hope this passes for you!

I'm experiencing this. Almost nothing excited me as much as traveling in my past. Now that I'm American, 66, single, retired and actually financially very fortunate I've lost the will after my last few trips. I think aging and declining physical vitality is the big part of it. Now when I think of traveling my emotionally depressed moments on the last trips are the only things I remember. I'm actually still interested in the world and doing my traveling now through TH-cam and my laptop screen with all the comforts and best routines of home. I'm happier than physically being on another continent.

That's the right strategy. I would get to a place where you can establish a routine. For me it would be more like a city. An island tends to be more transient with tourists going in an out for a couple of days. After traveling extensively for work (not backpacking so it is different) I stayed one month in Chiang Mai, running every other morning at the University campus around the lake, going to my coffee afterwards, going to the local market to buy groceries and fresh produce. There are places where you can do some guided meditations. I got all the energy back,

  • @Brent-ox8lk

I appreciate you sharing your experience with us! I'm sure you'll get your mojo back. Maybe just stay put a little longer in between moving around? Say a month or two in each spot? On my recent trip to Nicaragua I asked at hostels I stayed at about the possibility of staying on for a month. They said no problem, and occasionally they had people who did just that. Might be a little boring but, it would be fine with me to be honest. Only packing it up and moving once a month would have to be a lot easier on a person than every few days. Monthly discounts on accommodations and way less spent on transportation as well.

Yeah, you need a holiday from backpacking. It’s hard work, especially on a budget. The endless packing & unpacking, looking for accommodation & transport, sometimes at very short notice. Having to deal with visas, immigration and various officials. Language barriers and currency changes, the list goes on. And you’ve also got filming to do most days as well as the editing. If it were me I’d take a couple of weeks out to relax and just live in the moment. If you still feel jaded then consider returning home, even if just for a little while to get your bearings. Whatever you decide, I’ll still be here to watch your videos regardless. Best of luck Stu and take it easy mate.

Backpackers burnout is definitely a thing - especially when you are an older backpacker. I'm late 50's now (nearer to 60), started backpacking at 19, did one continuous stint of 17 years before returnng to my home country NZ (obviously many trips interspersed with periods of work where I could find it). I recall being in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia, possibly one of the greatest art collections in the world and after looking at the first two galleries of great masters just thought - I can no longer be bothered looking at anything (I had been on the road for 14 months and I still had another three months planned to get back to Beijing, China where I did take a month out and did virtually nothing). These days I have a more normal life of work, mortgage and manage a three month trip each year, but recently did two months central America and found that amount of time was my sweet spot. You have the right strategy, find a nice spot and take at least a week (preferably two) and get that routine back, don't feel pressured to always be on the go sightseeing, constantly moving and filming, hopefully the buzz will return. Sometimes having your own room, privacy and space makes all the difference as well - in Thailand you will find cheap private rooms in a guesthouse that hardly cost more than a bed in a dorm. All the best, really enjoy your engaging videos.

I totally get the "solo traveling can be lonely" (especially as an older guy) thing so I understand the need to be constantly making videos.
However, sometimes it is definitely worth it to just shut the camera off, find a cafe and chill for a few days.

Wow, that's a long time to be away from "home" - being alone. I think it's a good idea for you to go back and see family and friends in UK, recharge. I totally get you, many backpackers reach this point during their trip and I do after three months. Also called travel fatigue. Rest well the coming week. During my trip I always did nothing one day a week, stayed in a hostel, was lazy and watched TH-cam and movies, sometimes I did this two days a week. Would this be an idea? also at some point I stayed longer in one place instead of two or three nights. You don't have to do something every day.

Finding an Island to chill for a while sounds like a plan.
Yeah sometimes a routine can be good, nothing wrong with the familiar. Going to the same place where you can have your favourite breakfast in the morning, having a mid day nap then embedding yourself in a cozy boozer for a few cheeky afternoon scoops feeling the cooling breeze coming off the ocean and then going for a decent meal, maybe another beer or two then having an early night sounds alright to me.

Hostels are cheap but you end up just meeting other travellers which negates the point of travelling in the first place. Try and mix things up accommodation wise such as a local hotel and apartments where you can also have a routine for a week. Also you get burn out from just visiting the tourist sites so I started to be interested in normal life through my fascination with real estate and public transport. I left UK 35 years ago and still get so much pleasure from travelling but also need to have periods of staying put. Part of that is also to to with age with the hot weather taking its toll.

Since you have planned to spend Christmas in Thailand, you may want to indulge in the activities that make Westerners see Thailand as a paradise. Just be careful and watch your spending. Apple pay may take multiple bites and cease to exist. I live in Teluk Intan and my several trips over the border to Thailand are usually short, 3 nights maximum. My trip durations to Indonesia is almost a week, as language is not much of a barrier. I travel with friends but sometimes I do go solo.
In any travel we make, we have to make it interesting, and able to derive some pleasure as tourist. In your case, you are a working vlogger. You need to devote some time for yourself to relax and recover from the drudgery of work and travel.

I get it, It''s bloody lonely out there on your own. I only go away on trips for a couple of weeks at a time and I miss my Wife.
It's looks glamorous travelling the world and living out of a bag. But we all have our own issues and things we need to live a happy life.
I said it on my comment yesterday. Why not slow down your travels. Next time do a month somewhere and explore the local area. You are continually packing and having travel days unpacking and repeating. Plus you would save a small fortune on actual travel costs.
A month in somewhere like Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand would be within your budget and it's a one of the best places anywhere on the planet, a month exploring it's nooks and crannies would make great content.
Regardless, take care mate, don't make yourself ill doing this.
