    it's good to know that I don't have to be standing over a hot stove stirring and stirring. Next time I'm going to try the method that you have taught us here. Thank you

    Don’t use powdered. It’s to messy. If the small powder falls it’s hard to see and you’ll randomly see something you didn’t want dyed with bright pink dots on it

    Is it possible to dye only a portion of the shirt? I have a red polo but I want the collar to be black. How would I stop the dye from seeping into the rest of the shirt

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MatoranKane I think it's going to be pretty hard to keep the dye from getting on the rest of the shirt. One option, that you might not like, is removing the collar with a seam ripper so you can just put it in the dye bath separately and then sewing it back on when it's dry. Because you're doing a dark color, you may want to wash the collar separately a few times before reattaching it so you don't end up with color bleed on the rest of the shirt when you wash it later. good luck!

    Thanks for your great videos! I have a few questions: Why do you recommend using salt as a mordant for some fabrics, and vinegar for others? Does vinegar not work as well with fixing dye on cottons? I'm glad to find out that I can save the dye water for later! Could you save dye water that has vinegar in it? I can't wait to try out your tips on a thrift store dress that I bought. Thanks again.

      ***** These are the additives recommended by the dye company so they've already figured out which additive works best for which fabric. It should also be listed on your package. Yes, you should be able to save the dye, even with vinegar in it.

    I dyed a green sweater using black dye but it turned brown. I redyed it and it is still brown? What should I do?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you probably should have used a color remover before dying your sweater. www.ritstudio.com/techniques/the-basics/rit-color-remover/

    Does this work for all types of fabrics? I'm getting married on the beach and I want to dye barefoot sandals the color of my dress but the ones I'm looking at are mostly lace...

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it depends on the content of the fabric. If it's natural fibers like cotton or linen, it should dye. If it's synthetic, the dye will not take. If it's a mix, it may take some of the dye but will probably end up a light color. I think some shoe stores provide a shoe dyeing service....or maybe they just used to when I was a kid. doesn't hurt to check :)

    can't I dye a silk fabric with design on it I going like the main fabric color it's grey with patterns of different colors but I want it red or green will it work

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you want to redye a patterned scarf? If it already has a color it might be hard to predict what new dye will actually turn out. You can always use a dye remover first but it might remove the print, unfortunately.

    I have 175 white spandex chair covers. I want to dye them gray. Do I need to dye one by one? and how many rit dyes should I buy?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      according to the Rit website, you will not be able to dye materials like spandex. Dyes usually only work on fabrics made with natural fibers and not man-made fibers. :(

    I have white linen mix trousers elastic waisted and drawstring I'd like to dye navy . Can this be done ? Can you help ?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if it's mixed with synthetic, so linen/polyester, it may take the dye but it probably won't be very vibrant, so you may get a blue but not a navy blue. Unfortunately, there's not really a way to get around this yet :(

      oh no! you can try to use a color remover: www.amazon.com/Rit-Dye-Powdered-Remover-2-Ounce/dp/B00BMLIEOA and then once the color is gone, try to dye it again. good luck!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dyes you buy in the fabric store, like rit dye, usually only works on natural fibers so if it's made with man-made fibers, it probably won't take.

    I have several pairs of pants with blemishes from bleach splatter. The splotches are just a little lighter, not white. I have covered them with sharpie markers but that is temporary. Should I apply dye directly onto the splotchy areas before dyeing the whole garment?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lila Lee hmmm....I think it's still going to appear splotchy even if you do that. In my first attempt in dying fabric, I didn't really mix my fabric enough, so it came out splotchy and then I tried to redye it and it didn't help. I would contact the dye company that you would use and see what they suggest. I have a feeling they might suggest using a dye remover for the garment and then redying the whole thing. But let me know what they say.

    How can we dye the thread? Can we use a synthetic dye that will only magically bind to synthetic fabrics on a mixed piece? lol...wishful thinking, i know...but the thread remaining white is irritating and I wish I found a way to fix it!

    i havew green curtains what color to get them light blue.?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean you can try yellow to see if that makes them blue but you'll be taking a risk. Another option is to buy a dye remover: www.michaels.com/10227589.html so you take out the color and then add the dye color of your choice. good luck!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DoDo96 dye works on natural fibers like cotton and silk. It probably wouldn't work well on your dress. If it takes any of the dye, it'll probably be really light.
