    all your videos are so helpful. with dyes, once I have soaked an item in a dye bath, can I continue to use the same bath for other items? If I still have some left over, can I cover it and use it the next day etc? It won't be hot any more but I could heat it again...would that work?

      So one bottle (or packet) of dye will dye about 2 lbs. of fabric. After that, you will start to see less saturation in your color. So, that doesn't mean that you can't use it until the color wears out, but you are just not going to get consistent results.

    Thank you for this video! I am dying a 97% cotton shirt and some white masks (made by haynes and look like underwear LOL)
    I decided to use the dyemore because the color I want simply isn't available in the all purpose. (the sapphire)
    My questions. In the video you seemed to specifiy using the fix it for all purpose but didn't mention the dyemore. I don't care if the color fades, but I don't want it to run on other clothes.
    Do I need to fix the dyemore?

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually, you don't need to use fixative with dyemore, however, that is based off of the material your garment is made out of. Since you are using dyemore on cotton, you may want to use the fixative. It will help keep the color stay for longer and make it more vibrant.

      I was planning to dye an old pair of faded blue jeans but first I sewed a patch with ordinary all-purpose 100% polyester thread figuring it would turn blue once I dyed the jeans but *it did NOT absorb much of the dye* and that is when I realized that the regular cotton dye is not good at dying synthetics - even synthetic thread.

  • @gailkwas9866
    @gailkwas9866 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the video :) I understand that you should use Dyemore with synthetics if it's 35%+ (that's a given) and regular with cotton/naturals. It's easy to understand why you need the dyemore for synthetics but no one has mentioned why you shouldn't use it on cottons? I would think the dyemore would be a stronger dye? and maybe actually do a better job on cotton? I would appriecate any that knows the answers to Please inform me. I wanted to dye some cotton but thought that I would not be using the whole bottle of dye up, so I should buy the Dyemore, so I could use it on other small items later on.

    • @Archaneus
      @Archaneus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dyemore is not "stronger" it's a different chemical process. The actual chemical process used for synthetics doesn't work as well on natural fibers. What this amounts to is if you use Dyemore on natural fabrics, it will actually dye much lighter than the standard dye.

    Will certain dyes still leech color even after you used the rit Colorsafe fixative? I dyed some socks, underwear and a tshrit with the red Rit dye. I used the bucket method on both the dye and fixative baths with hot water as the directions say. When I went to wash the items after the fixative bath in warm water after rinsing them under cold running water, I noticed it still turned the wash water color. Even after using 2 bottles of fixative.

    Hi! Lovely video! I have a question: each and every time I dye clothing, with all purpose or synthetic dye, the actual thread that goes through the pieced of fabric remains undyed. I hate how it looks afterwards, very patchwork-like. How can one make sure that the thread seams are also dyed?
    Thanks!

    • @onlinefabricstore
      @onlinefabricstore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your best bet would be to use the dye more for synthetic materials and really hot water. It is really tough to tell because usually the thread is not listed in the fiber contents.

    • @rebecca_stone
      @rebecca_stone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agree - this used to drive me bananas. You may not be adding enough heat, or enough dye. Generally the thread in most clothes is 100% polyester and will not pick up dye easily. The one time I got a perfect result when dyeing jeans (from tan to very deep chocolate brown) was to use one bottle of all-purpose Rit dye in dark brown, and a bottle of synthetic Rit dye in dark brown. I dyed the jeans in the washing machine at 60 degrees Celsius with this mix and both the jeans fabric (cotton-based corduroy) AND stitching dyed perfectly dark brown. I hope this helps you. :)

      @@rebecca_stoneThanks you! Awesome info. Surprising how little experimenting is documented. I have a bottle of Rit Brand Purple DyeMore (Synthetic) and Rit Black All Purpose (Cotton) and I finally feel ready to combine the two bottles to dye 7 lbs of old jeans and one white pair of jeans. I bought a 32 Quart aka 31 Liter aluminum pot at Walmart for $32 - I just saw that aluminum can become pitted by the salt so use a pot that you don't care about. I will follow the synthetic instructions with high heat just under boiling about 195 F and stir for 1 hour.

    • @rebecca_stone
      @rebecca_stone 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pcofranc Oooh, OK - good luck with that. Update us on how you go! Black jeans with purple stitching sounds very cool! I'm in Australia on the metric system lol - but I also use a massive pot just for dyeing (stainless steel). Although with jeans I highly recommend the washing machine method for a store-bought perfect even colour through the fabric. :)

      I would probably recommend using dye more for both! DyeMore will dye cotton and other natural materials, but the other way around does not work. I would caution that if you used the all purpose, you would dye both, but you might not the same color with the one that is not 100% cotton.

    If I paint with the die is there a way to get rid of excess and keep it from bleeding or should I be using a different product to paint on fabric?

      You could dip dye the different parts of the garment, but if that's not the look you want, the only way to do it cleanly would be to take apart the garment, dye the pieces separately, and sew it back together.
