This kind of music live is truly an amazing experience. I saw Cannibal Corpse live (death metal not black) and the sheer force of power from the overall sound is incredible.

Deathspell Omega is single handedly bringing black metal to places it's never been. I feel like everything else is a copy of the early 90s sound.

Absolutely love this song and album. I know real fans argue about which incarnation of Mayhem is "best" but considering when this album came out in relation to how long they've been around it's absolutely outstanding. So many bands have a great first album, ok second album, and the rest is trash. This is not the case for Mayhem. They just keep growing, maturing, evolving, and leaving pure fucking terror in their wake. The quality of musicianship and production value transcends genres. Attila is such an incredible vocalist. I listen to such a wide array of music that it annoys most people and he is the only vocalist that I enjoy listening to isolated tracks from.

Just saw them last night. I’m pretty sure they opened with this, they definitely played it. Attila is the greatest. Hands down. The ultimate performer.
don't think they've ever played this one live. They opened with "Worthless Abomination Destroyed" on the last tour.
the production on those first four albums they knew what the music would sound like and they were very gifted professional musicians because damn it sounds like how just like how this black metal should sound gritty ominous foreboding like their is a blizzard outside so thick that you can't see where your going unless you venture out in it. and i have been in quite a few snowstorms that some folks were just afraid of yeah and while i don't share those particular feelings. I will say that Mayhem were very good at making sure when you heard the sounds and those quick rhythm changes it made you feel like you were their country or their part of the country what ever time of the season it was when they were putting this album together and when they remastered it

Just saw them again this weekend in Brooklyn with Blood Incantation, Gorguts, and Cannibal Corpse. IMHO, Mayhem was THE highlight of the night.

Seen them the 28th september 2023 in Montreal, the greatest show of my life \m/
Pioneers on so many levels. Maybe by an accident. It is well known that Sólstafir from Iceland were first an Black Metal band, before they blended some other genres in to the mix. At least at one of their concerts at a school, they brought some frozen pigheads and i think it was an utter clusterfuk, because they were probably in a group of 15-20 people that listened to that kind in all of Reykjavik.
In my opinion this album together with Ordo Ad Chao is the best Mayhem has ever produced - dark, complex, vicious and amazing passionate technical vocals.

I agree. Ordo Ad Chao was the highlight, this is a close second. Also, Rune Eriksen’s riffs on Grand Declaration… unbelievable.
Great album! It's one of those you have to listen to a few times to even know if you like it. Quite a cerebral album, not as "simple" as Ordo ad Chao, another of my favourites. Excellent progression! That's why Mayhem are so great. Constantly developing and moving, redefining what black metal is. Mayhem and Darkthrone have been defining the two camps; those who do what ever the fuck they want, and the traditionalists. Both camps are great and belongs in black metal. But in my opinion and to my taste Mayhem is so far above most other bands in the genre because they are uncompromising in their art. That's something I can really relate to, something I strive towards. I don't want someone to tell me what I should do with my music, writing, whatever. To tell me that if I want to make this or that kind of music or write this or that genre, I should do it in this or that specific way. Unless I'm delusional and don't know what I'm doing (in which case I would be fucked), I'm quite capable of making my own choices. In turns out I'm not delusional, so that's great :^) Mayhem are The True Mayhem, because they are fucking Mayhem! Thanks guys, you're awesome!
no matter how cool they are, but I would not say that they are constantly evolving and doing something new. I didn't hear anything new or special in this album. The French Blut Aus Nord is much better, many times better, more powerful, and more musical. Mayhem, though good old "shit", is no longer De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and that's why they go to rest.

@@SuicidalGrind That's great! :^) To me it was actually a good thing, listening and re-listening, unwrapping it in my mind. I felt the same with Ordo ad Chao, when I heard it the first time. What is going on!?! And then it just grew on me! It was a break away from their logical development at the time, in my opinion, which I think is super cool. And then they went in the opposite direction with this one! Awesome!
