  • Part of WoodenBoat’s Master Video Series, Louis Sauzedde (see WoodenBoat No. 239) gives a well-detailed and highly focused demonstration of how to sharpen a handsaw. Halsey Fulton of Fish Hawk Films shot the excellent close-up video of the action.

Probably the best video I've seen on reshaping teeth and on sharpening. Short, to the point, good commentary, excellent imaging and sound.
    thank you.

When I first started filing, I filed every other tooth, then flipped the blade end for end and then filed the alternating teeth. I now do all my filing from one side, no longer flipping the saw. So I do it exactly how you do it. You are the first filer I've seen over the years who does it almost like I do. With a saw such as you have there, I will "reshaped" the teeth by filing straight across as when filing rip teeth. Then I file the fleam angle that makes the teeth crosscut. People can learn how to file a saw from your video, unlike so many misleading video,s we see on TH-cam.

To those of you who are just beginning to file handsaws and want to learn how to do it so your saw will cut as good or better than new, follow this guy's instructions and you won't go wrong. Learn to file all the teeth from one side and do not file every other tooth then flip the blade. That is what contributes to ending up with what is called "Cows & Calves" or Big tooth-Little tooth" syndrome. When he did those test cuts on both soft wood then hardwood, notice there was very little tear-out at the bottom of the cut. That is an indication of a well filed saw. This guy knows how to file handsaws. Way too many saw filing wannabees posting TH-cam video,s that show exactly what not to do.

Quickly got the answer to my question.
When filing cross cut teeth, you keep the file level.

Knew a man in the 80s and that would sharpen saw blades for a dollar or 2. When he was done they would cut like a razor

If you have never seen this before only the second step is shown. The flats on the tops of teeth come from jointing the teeth and that has to be done first or you will make a mess and not have the flats to go by.

This explains why my crosscut saw sharpening is the pits!
I'm off to do it your way! Only - it would be great to have your input on saw file sizes v points per inch. Any hints?

If you look carefully, you will see that he bends it into a shallow ‘S’ curve. A simple curve won’t make a sound.
