EMS Educators, increase your student NREMT pass rates here: www.videosforems.com/schools
In EMS education, we always go over the emergent situations and scenarios to make sure we ready when that 911 call comes in. But few EMS educators talk about the how to protect both the patient and yourself on "everyday calls."
In this video, I talk about patients who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and how to best assess them. What makes a great EMT or Paramedic is to always put yourself in the patient's shoes.
If you called 911, how would you want to be assessed, how would you like the EMT or Paramedic to speak with you about your care. After seeing hundreds of alcohol-related calls in the ambulance, I came up with my own "ETOH Assessment" that I now share with you.
This patient assessment skill that I teach you will not only be great for your documentation to cover yourself, but will also help the patient if something else is going on that is causing their altered mental status. Do this for every altered mental status call, and you can't go wrong.
    Be great,
    Evan, The Paramedic Coach

Could I get a limited time access? Or even a discount code? I’m really trying to pass & do good, but I’m broke :(
Top it all off my instructor just rushes through slides. Makes us buy uniforms, pay for our own cpr classes, pay for castle branch, drug tests, & a whole bunch of materials and books we only touch once. I’m beginning to get really stressed out. My instructor is an old fire paramedic who says didn’t have to take the NREMT because it wasn’t a mandatory thing at the time & even he says he wouldn’t be able to pass it. I’m in such a pickle. Please help.

Should have been a little more in-depth about treating alcoholic patient.
I am EMT/nursing student and in recovery from alcohol for about 5 years.
I was a “frequent flyer”) terrible name, and all I ever got as a patient was O2 and trip to ED and maybe an IV.

I call it "Crying Wolf Syndrome". The one time you go to a frequent flier and tell them they're fine is going to be the one time they're ACTUALLY in need of intensive care.

Yes, hopefully this video reaches as many EMTs/Paramedics as possible so that doesn't happen as much

beleive it or not, patients like this are a huge part of why i got into EMS. in my earlier teenage years i did a lot of partying and every time i always found myself as the one taking care of everyone who was way too intoxicated and getting them safe rides home or to the hospital. i didn’t formally know what the ETOH assessment was at the time but that’s pretty much how i would assess anyone in that state and i have no doubt that i’ve saved a couple lives because of it. even just simple alcohol intoxication can be so lethal it’s always important to treat these patients thoroughly even if it’s just alcohol. the way people assume someone is “fine” just because they’re drunk is so dangerous. thank you for the video ❤️

Evan I’m interested in your course as a new EMT trying to prepare for paramedic. However I’m not sure what course to take first. Do I take you vault course then the EKG/ 12-lead master class? What order would you recommend?

You said you expose them? So like fully take if their clothes to treat like a trauma assessment basically?

    • @TheParamedicCoach
      @TheParamedicCoach  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

By expose your patient, I'm saying assess your patient like you would do with any other patient. Again, we are looking for certain signs of AMS. The one "exposure" I always talk about with alcoholism is if they are wearing a hat, remove the hat to assess their head for any trauma. Hope that helps!

Even if they’re a frequent flyer you’re still transporting them so you might as well just do the work
