Ashley is the prototypical red player. "I'm not sure if attacking right now is the right thing to do, but I'm gonna do it because I feel like. . . that's what the game is?" "I'm gonna play a mountain." "Counterspell? Really Sean? That's a coward's tool."
Well, Red is a deck that requires you to be entirely aggressive, so I say she played her deck perfectly. It is also a perfect deck for beginners, it is simply 'hulk smash!' none of that counter bullshit, or stuff like that, just pure smashy-smashy. :)
WAAAAY back in the day when I played my red decks I threw in some of the red elemental blasts to counter the blue counter spells... for some reason that really pissed off the blue weenies. :)
I love how supportive Sean was with every small play she made, really making sure she felt real good about the fact that she played a Mountain again. That sounds dumb, but for a beginning player that's some of the best stuff they can get; positive feedback, letting them know they're learning how to play the game and having fun doing it
Countering the 2/2 was actually the correct play. If he didn't do it, he dies in 3 turns and has no way to stop that. If he kept the essence scatter for another turn, he CAN'T play the 6/6 in his hand, so he has to have another weak turn and HOPE she draws something worth countering, which, in reality, wasn't very likely because she has way more small dudes than she does dragons and it was just as likely she draws a land or a buff card that we have already seen she has in the deck. Keeping the scatter for later would have been, in almost every circumstance, the wrong play.
It also empties Ashley's hand and now you're playing the odds that she won't topdeck something scary. I'm with you; the essence scatter; in this circumstance, was the correct play
I was thinking the same thing. Lucky topdeck, sometimes it happens, you gotta go in sometime. Plus it was absolutely the right entertainment play. Fun game!
Ashley Clements is amazing in the Lizzie Bennett diaries. Portrays her character beautifully. Ashley Clements is amazing at Magic the Gathering. Really conveys fun through her playstyle and personality. Bonus points for excellent and faultless play. Ashley Clements just might be amazing at existing.
Nah it was absolutely correct.Last card in hand for the opponent and it's an evasive threat that leaves him on (at best) a 3 turn clock.Sadly she topdecked a shivan dragon which was pretty unlikely.
I haven't stumbled upon any other "show" (yet) with such a good interaction between the host/editors/crew/guests as this, I learned that I personally like interactions such as: @1:46 As in: Referencing the work behind the camera(s) as well and not just let in blend in into the video, gives the feel of a big family and still keep the focus on the game and having fun :D (I also really like those one-way editor messaging pop-up text boxes that just awkwardly fits in hahaha)
Hiyya, writer/editor/producer here! We've built a really awesome family here over the years. I'm absolutely delighted that our camaraderie comes out on screen in a way that enhances your enjoyment! Comments like this make me super happy, thank you!!
This is my first time seeing this series, I'm only halfway into the video, and I am immensely impressed. Very streamlined, great editing, hilarious and clever text overlays, great vibe, and so far a fantastic host! This looks like a series I am soon to be addicted too. Great job! Also what a great Guest! She's so funny and charming!
To be honest, because of how new Ashley is to Magic, Red would be a great deck to play. Personally, and feel free tell me otherwise, but if I were to rank the difficulties of each colour, i would choose Blue, Black, White, Green, and Red. Blue being the most difficult b/c it requires a lot of planning and keep track of your options throughout your opponent's turn. Red would be the easier to me because, as Sean said, Red is all about hitting the face, dealing quick damage, burn spells, etc. Pretty straight forward. Of course all of these decks have their strengths and weaknesses however this ranking 8s based of general understanding
Personally, my fav is a straight up in your face goblin deck. I used to play one with both goblin grenade and shrapnel blast. #theresnosuchthingasoverkill
I really enjoy this show I hope you guys keep making it. The editing, set, and everything is really well done and it's just fun to watch. I think I've learned how to play from watching too which is neat.
Ashley played so well!!! I'm super impressed, she made absolutely NO play mistakes (except possibly missing 2 damage in her 2nd turn's attack, but the Pelakka Wurm would've invalidated that 2 damage anyway). She should definitely play more!
If she had swung in with both the rider and the dragon, Sean could've blocked the dragon and the rider would have lost its flying. I'm sure losing 1 flyer instead of 2 was the right move
When she returned her Whelp to play after it was countered, she didn't motivate it and attack. That was the only mistake I saw. I believe that happened.
I feel like that got edited out... Sean was at 12 life and then suddenly a 9-power attack brought him to 1, so... something happened in there, which was probably an attack.
It’s also no fun to CRUSH a new player ... so I’m feeling that though Sean by no means threw the game (he would never be that disrespectful), he probably took a little more chance than he should have with that essence scatter... playing the odds a little more than normal. I have no doubt there was real regret, but when you also show a new player a good time - THAT is also a win. 🤗
I disagree. Essence scattering there was completely the correct play. It's a known threat vs a chance topdeck, plus holding it meant another turn without him presenting a clock. Yeah, she got that chance topdeck and won, but that doesn't mean countering was incorrect. 'Tis the nature of the game, to get punished for making the correct play every now and then.
Never played Magic The Gathering before and this is my first time actually watch one of your videos, yet this has been one of the most enjoyable video i've watch for a long time. You guys are really enjoying it (especially the Girl), and seeing that i just can't help giggling along with Sean demise
Spoilers bellow * * * * * * * Anyone who criticizes (or agrees with) Sean that the 2/2 should not have been scattered, here's my take: At 11 life vs Red you're on the ropes, and you have to pick your poison here. Ashley's only viable threat at the time was a flying 2/2, adding another flying 2/2 is problematic. With 4 flying damage; you're on at minimum a 3 turn clock; 2 at best vs. Red. Sean did the best play available and I would do the same, because I can't sustain taking 4 to face at this point. It also emptied her hand so you play the odds and hope she topdecks a land or something not scary. In this she topdecks something very scary. It happens to everyone playing this game.
Okay, but it was unavoidable that she topdecked a huge threat, because these games are more or less rigged. The decks are probably sorted, maybe even re-sorted every cut. So if I was in such an unnatural game, I would definitely anticipate a big dragon.
Yeah, I'd have dropped that Essence scatter as well. Empty the opponent's hand, and turn my guaranteed three-turn clock into a six-turn clock while I sit back and hope they don't topdeck into, say, a Shivan dragon? Essence Scatter there was really the only smart play and saving it for the Shivan Dragon he didn't know was coming? Still dead in three turns, friends.
Indeed it is the correct play and I likely would’ve done the same. But simultaneously, I can’t help but hear that little devil on the shoulder say: she’s been drawing so much land and -useless- unimpressive cards so the probability of a heart of the cards topdeck is ripe.
What he miscalulated was how actually big was the goblin motivator: thanks to his haste, it made a red deck, usually fast, even faster. 7 to 10 damage could have come at any moment and there you need blue counters ready to roll.
20:00 You are mistaken I said that when you essence scattered the whelp. Who wastes a counter spell on a 2/2 flier? At least when playing against red. I mean we're talking a creature that has to attack three times to do more damage than a lava axe.
Tyler Boland i agree. The situation he was in he couldn’t predict a top deck like that. And if you plan on fead of what might happen then you can’t ever win
I do admit that the extra oomph was nice, but I miss the small celebratory jingle that it used to make when it lit up, small detail but if felt even more special you know? The Wheel of Fate! (insert music here)
Even though my comments are probably well-known for veteran MTG players, for someone who's never played the game, but does have a few cards: Having a creature that can add haste to others, which Ashley did so well with her Goblin Motivator I was happy to figure out that my Kaldheim Axgard Cavalry has the same power. Sweet!! And to the addition of +1/+0 to the Shivan Dragon, I had no idea that you weren't limited to just one mana to add that power. Now I'm looking thru my cards to see what creatures may have that, too. If/when I can ever play a Magic game for the first time Red for me, please. Nothing fancy, just smash 'em in the face! Thanks, G&S.
I'm not sure that essence scatter would have helped. If you let the 2/2 come into play you would have taken an additional 2, and then another additional 2 on the following turn. You would have gone to 5 instead of 1, and with 2 fliers you can't block that she can recast and give haste if you bounce one, how are you winning that game?
I think the essence scatter was fine. It was her last card in hand. She was way more likely to draw into something other than the 1 or 2 Shivan Dragons in the deck. He just gambled she wouldn't topdeck something good and lost. Had she drawn into another Whelp or Motivator, he probably would have been fine with the Dreadmaw. That being said, Ashley did really well! Really on top of swinging when she could and had a sweet curve turns 1 through 3.
Loollll 23:22 there's a Shock in her hand... the most optimal way for the game to end "y'know that dragon you bounced last turn? Well, turns out I'm gonna play... Shock. Good game."
"So, my worm was a little short lived, but it did its job."
I know that feel.
Fight Me wurm dude.... Ha, just messin' around, don't take me seriously.
well wurm
oh, worm?
Let's not open that can-o-wurms.
It worms my heart to read this thread

As an OG red deck player, it's a great game for a beginner. She is born to be red. Hope she continues playing.
To be fair blue spells are generally pretty snidely and cowardly.
WAAAAY back in the day when I played my red decks I threw in some of the red elemental blasts to counter the blue counter spells... for some reason that really pissed off the blue weenies. :)
Like to see her branch into RG, Gruul is very Timmy and she is straight up Timmy (Tammy)
Ashley Clements is the kind of person you want on your competetive laser tag team.
You are brilliant and that was an excellent statement!
ABM
Always be motivatin
Hell yeah.
don't trust the redheads.
they're evil..... eeeeeevillllllll @.@ _cowers_
And she's cute as hell...which is never a bad thing
We all need a goblin motivater in our lives.
I love how supportive Sean was with every small play she made, really making sure she felt real good about the fact that she played a Mountain again. That sounds dumb, but for a beginning player that's some of the best stuff they can get; positive feedback, letting them know they're learning how to play the game and having fun doing it
What is red? Baby, don't burn me. Don't burn me. For four.
And red listened. And burned you for 10 instead. #Red
Nooo, bad ending!
I see what you did there.
It's what popped into my head the moment she asked the question.
Damn you. Now I gotta go listen to Meshhugah to get this out of my head now.
Countering the 2/2 was actually the correct play. If he didn't do it, he dies in 3 turns and has no way to stop that. Yep. Top deck got him.
...but now the joke is ruined. Now we can't make fun of Sean without real reason. What are we going to do now?!? :P
kingofbudokai It really hurts to play the game right but still get punished.
I was thinking the same thing. Lucky topdeck, sometimes it happens, you gotta go in sometime. Plus it was absolutely the right entertainment play. Fun game!
I love how serious she was when she said, "Elves were never meant to fly."
That's not how you comment on TH-cam.
The correct way would be "She is hot and I hope Sean banged her afterwards."
Need this show back
She learned the greatest lesson in Magic - the "still had all these" phase.
Tim Good 'un!

In this episode, Sean suffers from premature essence scattering. It's okay, Sean, it happens to a lot of guys.
Nah it was absolutely correct.Last card in hand for the opponent and it's an evasive threat that leaves him on (at best) a 3 turn clock.Sadly she topdecked a shivan dragon which was pretty unlikely.
✈️ whoooshh
Woooooosh
Oh gosh now I'm going to refer to it as scattering my essence
You should play a game of 4 player commander for the season finale to show everyone how crazy and absurd magic can be.
With all the power creep, its nice to see shivan dragon winning a game again.
jackalackb17 Right? Old favorites back again. Let's get Fireball and some Grizzly Bears in play!
Sean was actually killed by Shock pre damage step
@@KhanGarth But the huge swing two turns before is what really killed him.
I really liked the delivery of "With m'nerd friends" today
With mannered friends.
"Counterspell? It's a coward's move Sean. Fight me." A woman after my own heart.
I haven't stumbled upon any other "show" (yet) with such a good interaction between the host/editors/crew/guests as this, I learned that I personally like interactions such as: @1:46

@@scissorbot_cw Yo this whole show is just... really well put together. Like it's kind of ridiculous.
“I spit on your grave.”
Perfectly timed edit haha.
the bm is real
I spit on your grave 2
This was the first episode I ever saw and I love rewatching it. It got me interested in MTG and I have lots of Red Decks now
WOW, the quality of this video is above and beyond any video I could ever imagine!!!
There's nothing like the feeling of having cards in your hand and playing face to face. I love it.
2:37 "What is red?"
20:47 Clements' enthusiasm is the final nail in the coffin.
23:45 Indeed, a well-deserved victory.
This might be the best Spellslingers episode yet. All love to Miss Clements~
This and will wheatons tabletop are the best series geek & sundry offer

Yay Ashley! So happy to see more of you since Tabletop and Lizzie Bennet!
Wait, Tabletop?
Wait, FOUR times? I am sold!
The "I spit on your grave" was a well timed edit.
Thanks!
Ashley really captures just how much fun Magic can be. Great episode!

I would swap U and B in your lineup, but otherwise agree (self-sacrifice is harder to learn to do right than managing your opponent's turn, imo).

When i first started playing Magic in 1994. My first deck was a Burn. Gotta love the 4th round 12 damage from the playset of Lightning Bolts.
@@jenjenhocho3188 I loved the Goblin Grenade!!!
That was a great episode. Ashley was super fun and Sean was his usual Plottly self. Loving this new season.
Ashley is awesome and she brought all the savage burns. No pun intended and she just really got into it! I love it!
Man Sean Plott is so damn entertaining. Could watch this guy play MTG all day!
Mama Dragon vs Dino Daddy.
More like Mama Dragon eats Dino Daddy for lunch and uses his Elves for toothpicks.

Hey Jeff! We're really glad you like the show. The team works super hard for folks just like you. :-)

Sick play Day9 countering that whelp. Check out that sick move Day9 made with his sick play today.

"Simple, large, and blunt"
wow, such self-burn, Sean!
Solid episode featuring a classic monster. Thanks.
I'm always so happy when I see a new episode!
I really wanted them to play the NIcol Bolas deck that was on the wheel... my fav card this set
Sure wish there would be more of this series.
Petition to evergreen "Motivated" as another name for Haste
Motivated might be interesting for psedo-haste where you can use tap abilities like haste, but not attack with haste.
This is the most ominous game of Magic I've ever seen
HISHE: Last round before laying down her cards, Ashley stares at Sean and smiles sweetly. Sean says, "What?". Ashley replies ... "Dracarys". 🔥🐲
I love how he beat LSV, but still got stomped by a beginner :D
Eric Olsvik Tbh with these cards, it's hard to keep it skill-based.
DelPlays pretty mediocre, even for a starter deck
The ending was truly shocking. A must see.
Y’all are crazy, it was 100% correct to counter the 2/2 flier. Can’t be helped that she top decked like a champ. Well played both sides :)
Tyler Boland i agree. The situation he was in he couldn’t predict a top deck like that. And if you plan on fead of what might happen then you can’t ever win
Oh, yay, more spellslingers! I want these for every MTG release to show the different mechanics.
This just reminded me that I need to rewatch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Truly one of the best webseries ever made.
Only now do I realize that I've missed this serie so much!
"hi folks. Are you okay in there?" might be the best intro to spellslingers ever
That kind of games are the ones that make you stay.
4:27 That giggle just made my day .
Ashley's calm time is unnerving yet soothing and cute badass.
That poor wheel doesn't even have sound anymore
barely lights up too
Too much of the budget went to the summon effects. Did you see how audacious they were? No more room for wheel noise. Hehe
I dunno, the actual physical sound was pretty solid this week. Both of them put some oomph into it!
I do admit that the extra oomph was nice, but I miss the small celebratory jingle that it used to make when it lit up, small detail but if felt even more special you know? The Wheel of Fate! (insert music here)
still funny that the table is so big that they have to get up and walk over to the wheel.
"I spit on your grave." LOL. Ashley is awesome!
That epic flavor text foreshadowing highlight on the Rhox. Well done editer, well done.
"Elves were never meant to fly" Amazing
I just got that Sarkhan deck and it is pretty good with its plains walker
i was not surprised that Ashley got Mono red. it fits so well, especially since on Tabletop, she was going for Might when they played Monarch.
I love how Sean fully shows his 6'5" height, by standing up, which immediately puts his whole HEAD out of frame.
3:13 i love that series of facial expressions haha
I really enjoyed watching Ashley play. She was so giggly!
So i need to go back and watch her shows. She is gorgeous with a beautiful smile and great personality.
I do like the narratives that can come out of some of these games.
Young red-headed mother of dragons vs. the experienced river hermit.
Oh so much fun, love this series. Was a rough few unlucky draws, but good game.
"I'm nervous to play someone with much more experience." Welp you have nothing to worry about Ashley.
Whelp*
She's so awesome, I wanna see more of her :D
This has to be one of my favorite episodes!
Nice to see the show back
"I can get behind...dragons." Love you Ashley hahahaha
man I just woke up from a nap to some Spellslingers!?!?!?!? HELLLLL YEAHHHH. :D
Thanks, G&S.
This was a great episode to watch. Thank you.
Back to back Day9 Magic games!
*I can get behind... dragons*
19:30 reminded me a lot of "Shaman of the pack!"
Bring back Spellslingers pls
I'm not sure that essence scatter would have helped. If you let the 2/2 come into play you would have taken an additional 2, and then another additional 2 on the following turn. You would have gone to 5 instead of 1, and with 2 fliers you can't block that she can recast and give haste if you bounce one, how are you winning that game?
Wow! The goblin motivator made a significant impact in this match.
Years later after starcraft, I still enjoy watching day9 ^_^
I'm a simple man, I see Day9, I thumbs up the video.
I skip to the end of the video, figure out who won, and throw in my thumbs up.
You're not a simple man, you're the FIRM man. I see through your lies.
My favourite episode of Spellslingers yet. Also, these guys should date
Loollll 23:22 there's a Shock in her hand... the most optimal way for the game to end "y'know that dragon you bounced last turn? Well, turns out I'm gonna play... Shock. Good game."
I commented that before I saw the last part of the video...
Good banter during the episode, you two really have a good rapport. Bring her back so we can watch her crush you with a control deck
