    I'm from Germany and i am amazed how Americans managed to mess this up so badly. There are no gates and nothing stopping you from getting onto buses and trains. Very rarely there is a conductor checking the tickets but it happens like once every 100 rides. Yet fare evasion isn't nearly as big an issue here as it seems to be in New York. And i can assure you, this most certainly isn't because Germans are some morally superior people. It's simply because fares are actually affordable for poor people here.

      @@Potatwielder Nope. No gates, barriers or anything. You can just walk onto any train platform if you want. What i'll say though, is that on commuter trains conductors checking for tickets are a bit more common, maybe like once every 20 rides or so and on long distance and high speed trains there are conductors on almost every single train.

    • @DaCouchWarrior
      @DaCouchWarrior 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      @maxwang7937 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      @@Potatwielder Metro trains (or U-Bahn in German), Commuter Train (S-Bahn) or Regional Trains all do NOT have gates in Germany, you can walk straight into the trains, and many stations are very simple, with only platforms. The key is to actually have some punishment (60 euros) for those who are caught by ticket inspectors. Inspectors randomly ride trains and busses to check tickets. Also there's a somewhat cheap Deutschlandsticket, with which you can ride all regional/communtor train/busses for 49 euros per month (29 for students).

    • @FrankieBoy-whatever
      @FrankieBoy-whatever 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Same in Vienna. You could just walk in without a ticket as there is nothing like a gate. In case you get caught, which hardly ever happens you pay a fine of around 100€. Seeing that a yearly ticket is only 365€ to ride all public transportation in the city it’s just not worth the risk, even if getting caught is extremely unlikely

Someone threatening you? kill them, let them kill you, flee... I believe that even if events can prevent a desired outcome, immediate decisions are always viable and the individual alone is responsible for those actions. with this in mind, I believe that people who don't pay for fairs, is labelled a criminal, because while they were pushed to make a decision, they could have just not taken the fair, and pay later or pay if they had enough. Now, in the opposing side, is that people would likely not commit the crime if they weren't pushed that far, and I agree with that. Theft would be non-existent if the community was high-trust, afluent, and had tight-knit relations. But people are pushed by circumstances and nowhere is perfect, that's understandable. If the city refuses to do anything about crime and makes law abiding citizens pay more to subsidize criminality, people aren’t going to care anymore and ride for free.

    I visited Japan recently and have fully utilized their public transportation system both by subway (regular and bullet) and by bus. I have seen the stark difference of how Japan runs its public transport compared to New York. The efficiency, cleanliness, safety are top notch and no one ever thinks of fare evading. It probably is never thought of that one would definitely stand out if they do so with impunity. There were transport officers, but they mostly served to direct people where to go and provided information when asked. It truly was amazing. It was also absolutely safe to walk in the streets at night, and we did so several times with no fear of being accosted, stabbed or shot. All the convenient stores are open 24/7 and some of their merchandise are actually displayed right outside and no one dares to steal. I don't think I've seen homeless folks too. I wish New York was the same, it would be glorious.

      The reason why the Japan public transport system is so well run & maintained is because it is privately run. It also doesn’t operate 24 hours a day, which allows time for regular maintenance. As for the Japanese society, their citizens have affordable housing, health care, affordable food… it’s a society that isn’t necessarily rich but their basic needs are met # something that millions of Americans are unable to do. And it’s worth noting their society doesn’t have the American individualism & consumerism. Unfortunately too many Americans are a selfish lot.

You must show your pass/ticket to exit otherwise you have to pay a fine. Every once in a while, a plainclothes employee of the public transport services checks if you have a ticket (this happens pretty rarely). If you don't have a ticket you pay a fine. easy solution: JUST MAKE TRAVELING INTO MANHATTAN NOT SO DAM EXPENSIVE. 1. the car tolls going into manhattan or WAY too expensive 2. the price for 1 train ride is WAY too expensive, and 3. so are the buses, it’s really easy to spend anywhere from $10-$60 a DAY in manhattan just to go one day there and back from jersey or any other outside borough. and no one will pay that much money every single day. Make. it. CHEAPER

      "no emergency exit" is an immediate red flag, no matter what systems you have in place to open the gates in an emergency. what if for whatever reason, there's nobody in the booth during an emergency? what if there's a power outage and the gates can't open? there's a reason that wouldn't fly in the united states: fire regulations prohibit it, and for good reason.
      on that note, doors that are spring-loaded and thus open when power to the motor/solenoid/whatever is cut along with an emergency override switch on the wall that mechanically cuts power to the gates and activates the fire alarm would be a good solution that balances safety with stopping fare-dodgers.

    In Queensland Australia where I live, we have transit police who are regular police but just assigned to transit. Their job is to walk train, bus & ferry platforms and ride the transit services. When they jump on a service they'll require everyone to demonstrate they've either tapped on with enough credit to cover the fair, or possess a valid digital single use ticket.
    If you don't, it's an on the spot $300 fine and you get a fare evasion charge on your criminal record.
    They also sometimes hang out at gates to check ticketing.
    You might go 3 or 4 services without seeing one, but eventually you will. It makes fare evasion like russian roulette because you're guaranteed to get caught it's just a matter of when.
    They're also about to drop all fares down to 50c in August.

    Remember when people were taught at school and church and in the home that stealing was a sin? Those were good days.

      Individuals need to follow rules or society as a whole can break down. NYC is spiraling out of control. It should never have been allowed to get this bad.

    In Prague we don't have any turnstiles. You just walk in. There are ticket controllers that have right to hold you until the police arrives in case you don't have a ticket and refuse to pay the fine. You can buy anual ticket for fair price (around 0.4 usd per day) and you can ride anything anytime.
