  • This video looks at Europe between the discovery of Vinland by Leif Erikson and the rediscovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Did nobody retain the knowledge of Vinland? Did Columbus study the Vinland Map?

It seems to be reasonably well established that some late mediaeval cod fishers ventured from England as far as what is now known as Newfoundland, so whether it was because of folk memory or more recent exploration there was an idea of land over the Atlantic.

Great video ! Maybe you could make an extra video on João Vaz Corte-Real, Pining and Porthorst journey to New Foundland in 1472 -could explain why the portugees didnot support Columbus' idea of sailing westward to India :-)

Very interesting! I've heard that Columbus was in Iceland all my 63 years. But it seems unlikely. What does seem likely is that he would have heard about it from Northern seafarers while in western Briton.

Columbus spent an entire winter in Iceland in 1477-1478. I read that he spoke of land west of Iceland and Greenland.

I think Columbus knew of the new world from the sagas...and the Spanish royalty knew from intelligence they gathered from the Moors...

That was a really intriguing video, I did laugh at the point you said you had a hard time finding sources (windland) I had thought the same thing as I am making a video and a book about Tana Tuva, lets just say they are not the most documented people on earth.

Thanks! And I guess that’s the trouble that people like us have to go through to make certain information just a bit less obscure. I’m looking forward to see you’re new video!

@@BradleyGearhart uh ya thats going to be a bit different as you see there is a lack of funding for "animation" so for a few videos we are going to have to look at my lovely face. until I can find someone who can draw for me as I just do not have the time to do it myself.

When reading the Columbus Manifesto, the travel to Iceland was mentioned

Columbus most likely did not talk more about going to Iceland because he did not want to divulge where he got the information the “New World” existed.

I liked the video. You might be interested in my 2018 book, "A Sorry Saga: Theft, Forgery, Scholarship... and the Vinland Map" (ISBN-13: 978-1719979788). Being self-published, it hasn't received much publicity, but it's the most extensive investigation of the map in years - and it includes some new cartographical evidence which finally settles the authenticity debate!

Why didn't he mention his northern travels? Maybe because he was trying to get the Spanish royal court to bankroll a trip to Asia, and all its riches, not some desolate ice covered rock and he needed them to believe it would pay off for them. I think he knew darn well he wasn't going to Asia.

The Vinland Map was exposed as a fraud almost immediately, and its owner, Yale University, finally admitted it was.
