I really love these videos. I send them to my mom to see if she remembers these places or events. It's also interesting to see the changes and growth of these developments.
Too bad shopping malls have largely fallen out of popularity. Kudos to the ones that have managed to hang in there. These were the golden years of shopping malls.
when i first moved to SD I was single and needed new work clothes, as no one dressed in suits in professional positions. I was in temporary housing, listening to Jim Rome show on radio, and heard the Fashion Valley JC Penny commercial: “JC Penny’s men’s store at Fashion Valley; get in; find what you need; get out!”. It was so true, upper level entrance went right into the men’s store, dockers, hagar pants, short sleeve buttone down shirts, all right there. I always did my shopping at that JC Penney’s at Fashion Valley.
Doing my best Matt. We saved everything so there's a lot to go through. I have been thinking about adding a new franchise--News 8 Throwback--Then and Now. It's not always people-- but places too. Thank you for your feedback. Barb Nielsen
I grew up going to the South Bay Plaza. My parents would buy my back to school clothes at JC Penney, my shoes at Thom McAn. And my dad would always buy stuff from Western Auto. My favorite store was the little hobby store at the east end of the shopping center where I would buy my model cars and supplies to build them.
Jesse died on June 4, 2021, age 74. He was such a good person. And you can watch heartfelt stories about him, by going to the TH-cam search box and entering his name, along with, San Diego News Reporter. They really are some very heartwarming stories. 🙏💕
When it new it popular but over time and now the malls any are fading or less traffic due to online shopping now. i even seen videos where some are a mess caused closed for any reason.
Notice how they didn't use the word mall in this report. In Mexico, new shopping centers and malls are popping up in many cities in the last few years, some make Fashion Valley look miniscule and outdated. Meanwhile, shopping malls in the US continue to struggle thanks to online shopping.
@@malcorub And think how incredible that is. Back in the 90's Horton Plaza was considered the place to be, the hottest most exciting mall around. It was even being featured on national news stories for being so hip and beautiful.
Yes. Price Breakers is where JC Penneys used to be. The Panda Express used to be Longs Drug store. Montgomery Wards was across the street where the Wal Mart is now.
South Bay Plaza was pretty dead in the 1970's. The only places I remember was the Woolworths and Bar-b-que Pit. It only got busy when they opened the Hometown Buffet.
cool video I was stationed at NAS Miramar 77-78, Loved San Diego
Keep the old viedos coming this is san diego nostalgia

I Love this one, so cool to see Fashion valley in its original form. Thank you Barb! Keep up the fantastic work!

San Diego back in the 70’s was a tranquil way of life
As a proud third generation San Diegan IIove these videos and remember the simpler times.

Grew up in the 70s in San Diego, Del Cerro area. Simply the absolute best childhood a boy could ask for
Oh I remember playing on that dinosaur near The MayCo!!!!!!
Fourth generation san diego native , please go through your archives and keep them coming. A where are they now ? Section would be good.

@@cbs8sandiego thank you for bringing us back to yesteryear a time when san diego was "simply simple" looking foward to viewing more.
No mention of Collrge Grove mall, closest mall to South East

The San Ysidro area of San Diego is as peaceful & boring as it gets, come on down.
Holy moley Jesse Macias must be like 90 now.
Jesse Macias passed away two years ago of kidney failure. He was a personal friend. RIP, Jesse.

If Mexico is so great and so modern than are her citizens always fleeing North ?
I was hoping to see College Grove, too.
Fast foward 40 years: mission Valley & parkway plaza are dead malls
While fashion valley and plaza bonita boom 💥
I wouldn't describe any mall here in SD as "Dead" like in other parts of the country, but business is slower at MV and PKWY Plaza than it use to be.
@@malcorub I think Horton Plaza is about as dead as dead can get.
@@doccopemys9870 Yes, you got me there. Horton Plaza is dead and gone.

You forgot UTC, think they are doing well (for now).
I use to play in that play area in Mission Valley.
What's there now? I couldn't figure out where that way in the mall. Is it the parking garage escalator?
@@malcorub If I have my bearings correctapalyground became parking spaces the upper deck covering parking space and used for Kiosks
@@malcorub I think it’s under the former Ruby’s diners in front of the AMC.
Is South Bay plaza where price breakers is located?

@@franciscoflores7911 thanks.
Can you guys please do a video on video rental stores in San Diego? I would love to see North Park Video if there's any footage of that place.

There wasn't a Woolworth at South Bay Plaza.
I remember then money wasn't a thing back then.
Did that lady have a dior bag
I went there national city
Parkway plaza is awful now. Probably gone within 5 yrs tops. The Walmart is shutting down Feb 9.
