    As a dark brown skin woman with a mothers who is lightskin(light brown depending whose asking) i understand what your saying. And ppl get mad when I say this, but there are a lot of dark skin women who project their insecurities on the light skin girls. I had to come to the realization that I did that when I was a young girl and I had to be honest with that. I hate that my mom has to prove her blackness or ppl treat her like she thought she was better than everyone else even though she is such a humble woman. Sometimes and I mean SOMETIMES, we may perceive their confidence as them thinking their better cus they lighter skin. They cant help how others see them.

    Mona you gotta remember that just because you're an outlier doesn't mean that other lightskin women don't act like they are better or prettier or mean to darker women because they are lighter. And the Dani Leigh thing is so much different than the India Irie song because India is talking about appreciating her brown skin and the brown skin of her partner. Dani's song is LITERALLY about a man choosing her because she's lightskin and better than his darkskin ex. I agree that sometime lightskins do get some backlash for no reason, but also the whole rest of the world loves you, and validates you more than darker skinned women. Black men constantly show that they respect and want lightskin women more than DS women.

      There is food and bad on all sides . Doesn’t mean MOST light skins behave this way, just like someone can’t say all or most dark skins behave this way. The oppressor wants you to think that and be against one another . We play right into their plot to separate us.

    Catching up because I’m way behind on the podcast! I love what you doing Mona.
    There was a point that I would have agreed with you regarding your points on colorism. Many times lightskin ppl are regarded as weaker or softer or simply treated as outcasts in certain social settings. I’m darkskin but I’m also skinny. And as a skinny woman in the black community growing up people made many comments on my body and how unappealingly skinny I was and how I needed to eat more and gain some weight. And I internalized that and hyperfixated on my body for a long time (still do). To the point where I thought it was unfair that plus sized women thought my struggles were lesser than simply because I was skinny! However, after growing up and opening my eyes, I realized that the struggles plus women go through indeed trumped my struggles as a skinny woman! Plus size women are taught to hate themselves on a WAY bigger scale than skinny women! I dealt with a few comments from friends and family members but there aren’t any commercials telling me what I can do to gain weight. I don’t struggle to find cute clothes in any run of the mill clothing store. I don’t have to think about what/how I eat in front of people. THATS why plus size women get frustrated with me when I talk about my experiences. And I think colorism is very similar to this issue! Dark skin people get frustrated because on the topic of colorism, lightskin ppl feel the need to say “ME TOO” when it is in fact NOT you too. For example if lightskin people are seen as weaker and less threatening how do you think that same mindset affected the dark skin girls around you?

  • @josmith4572
    @josmith4572 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think this problem with DaniLeigh's song is the context of it all. The song says "Yellow bone is what he wants" this was in response to DaBaby's other bm, MeMe, who is a dark skinned woman. I think that's why the song had a negative cognitation around it.

    LETS GO DAMONA … man I felt this in a world of Kardashians and black folks calling themselves Barbie it’s always been weird . No offense to Nicki but she is a huge influence to girls calling themselves Barbie because she does . Colorism has been forced upon us and it’s still hard for women . I feel women get the short end of the stick with colorism . Our mentality has been dismantled for centuries to put each other against each other . Keep speaking on these topics . Much appreciated !

    I understand what the man off camera is saying regarding light-complected or mixed-race women who fancy themselves more desirable. Not the bathing part, but I have experienced it with hair.
    Any time a girl referred to her hair as "good", said girl's hair was always a f*cking mess. Every. Day. And darker complected girls I knew were always perfectly groomed.
    In adulthood, a grown woman said to me, "Don't bring your brothers around me. You know I got that good hair." I had to tell her, "My brothers are married. And they're married to white women, soooo... I don't know how 'good' your hair is" because if we go with that line of thinking, then a white woman is superior. If you believe that, cool. I don't happen to think any woman is superior to me, so...
    (BTW, I worked with that woman for 5 years, and her hair was never ever ever ever "done". Like ever.)

    I think this stereotype of light skin girls being “stuck up” or “bougie” steams from them being more confident. As someone who’s brownskin I had to build up confidence so I was more quiet and shy whereas many light skin girls I know are more outgoing .. I think it’s because they know how beautiful they are .. they don’t get “your pretty for a light skin girl” so we’re not used to seeing that level of confidence and we label it as stuck up. Just my take on it

    The only defense you have against Instagram is to post on all social medias that way when they see videos that they took down is being played on TH-cam it makes him lose money because the first thing people going to say is hey man this is deleted on Instagram but it is on TH-cam go look at it now you have more people getting off Instagram and on to TH-cam... but they know that the truth fans will stay with Instagram.

    We gotta stop excluding women from the conversation of police brutality, speaking on colorism whilst ignoring the way it affects black women’s interactions with the police and the judicial system is a bit ironic.

    nah thats some reason shit. sometimes u really gotta sit back and think about the different outcomes. my interactions with cops, i go right into that slave act because i have to think about my people, my personal people. so ima “ yes sir “ my way out of this interaction with this cop bc i gotta think about the ppl i gotta come home to.
    i moved to boston during 2020 and made white friends who loved going to rallys and my ass stayed home, i was hours away from my family with no real friends there, if something happened to me, who gonna protect me??
