+18 mph gusts - 50 year old Sunfish kicking butt.
Barnagat Bay, Long Beach Island NJ. She's my second Sunfish, also have a 2020 model (the race sail is rigged here). This hull's a bit softer and the DePersia brass bailer is sealed closed. Only used on lake before, wasn't sure how she'd do with some real wind and chop - she did great - softer fiberglass probably smoothed the waves out. Just needed to use my manual (jug) bailer every 15 minutes. Yes, the rudder is backwards (*bugger off) - the beach start was a little chaotic, didn't realize this till I was moving... decided to just keep going.

RS Zest - Susannah's First Time Sailing
มุมมอง 15K6 ปีที่แล้ว
She's never been sailing before, but took to the jib sail pretty quickly! Beautiful dusk sailing on our lake. She's 5'10" and I'm 6'2"... maybe that'll help you picture yourself in one since RS has little photography or videos to demonstrate scale...
RS Zest 15+kts First Ride...

Picked up my Zest this month! Unlike RS's marketing, I'm not a kid or a first time sailor. Figure it'd be nice for other people to see how adults fit in one since I couldn't find any videos this winter myself. I'm 6'3 and about 200 lbs. It was very gusty for our lake, great conditions if it wasn't my first time with my Zest. Also, the Sony AZ-1 cam on the boom isn't great, picked up a Hero 6 si...
How experienced were you though? You seem very capable. I was looking to learn more after I took lessons on a keel boat. I didn’t seem to master it well at all so I thought I would try this one. Thoughts?
why is the jib constantly wrong sheeted. Always on both sides???
What makes the sunfish faster?
in my view, it's not 18 knt. 14 max
You'd not be looking at the white caps then
Very nice! Nothing like sailing😄 keep on posting movies ,that makes me smile...
Thank you! Will do!
Do you also single hand the Zest with the jib? How much power/speed do you think the jib adds? So far I have only single handed my Zest, and I have not bought the jib yet, but I am thinking about it….
Hey there - def use it. Most of the time I’m one handed with it - the good woman rarely comes with me. It does add some power, can feel it pulling the front end along… plus it’s more fun.
I got my Zest in Oct 2020 and had only limited chances to use before Wisconsin winter set in. Therefore, I have viewed the various Zest videos multiple times (and bought a dry suit!) awaiting the ice to clear. Thanks for your videos!
I’m in the northwest corner of NJ, we have short summers but not as severe as you of course. When I don’t fully take advantage of them I hate myself come February. We can go from 70 degree September to 40 degree September in a blink of an eye.
Rob is so laid back. Not only does he not wear or bring along a PFD (buoyancy aid), he must have never lost his spectacles in the drink! It IS better to be lucky than good.
Bah neither - I did lose a pair in the drink last year during a sunfish race if that makes you happier
why is the jib cleated on the wrong side???
He's got it set up as a self tacking jib... it's actually attached on both sides and the clew is held amidships. Yes, it could be marginally faster if he adjusted the sheet but as it was her first time sailing, I think he did the right thing. You can see in the end, she's controlling the sheets and perhaps not letting the upwind sheet out quite enough but give her a break, it's her first time!
Great point --- I might add she's now crewing for an FJ fleet here, so she's caught up a bit.
Hello. Nice video and great location. Where is that beautiful lake?
leuke boot he?

@@nickgibbs6891 aw fuck man
just got a Zest!
jamie pastman congrats! Enjoying it?
Rob Schaap oh yeah. your video helped me a lot, i’m new to sailing, made it possible for me to take my first sail with confidence. Thanks Rob!
Congratulations Jamie! I'm just learning too. Rob's videos have been very helpful to me, as I wasn't able to find lessons in my area (southern Oregon). I've also watched a lot of the Sailaboattv videos on TH-cam. They're mostly dealing with Lasers, but still helpful information. I love my Zest. I admit that I don't have enough experience to know a good boat from a bad boat, but so far - I'm convinced Zest is 12 feet of sweet. Very forgiving and lots and lots of fun! Thanks for your videos Rob, please post more when you can.
Asleep at the sheet...!
It looked like a nice time. Oddly quiet. But.... What was her overall experience? Did she like it? Will she want to do it again maybe a bit more daring? Or was she Meh🤷♂️?
Can the jib be furled?
Yes
18-25 with no whitecaps? Methinks not...
Well there are whitecaps...
Rob Schaap I saw maybe one or two in the entire clip. Not 18-25 worth. And not even hardly hiked out.
@@cubeistgames7985 he is sailing on a broad reach or beam most of the video and he is on a small lake which is most likely the reason for no whitecaps
Sebastian Pfft. The Lake isn’t THAT small.
@@sebastianmcclay7866 the lake is big enough for white caps buddy and thats probably about 10 to 15 knots
I hope your still sailing
Looks like a fun boat. Hoofer Sailing Club in Madison, WI, just purchased a small fleet of these. I can't wait to try it. Great seeing you get back aboard! Looks like reasonable boom height. Also sails both cat- and sloop-rigged. www.hoofersailing.org/
Hoofer Sailing Club in Madison just purchased a small fleet of these. I'm looking forward to sailing it. It looks like it has a reasonable boom height.
Very very reasonable height! Sailed a couple times this week with the nutty gusty weather and am very happy with the stability all around.
That actually looks pretty comfy with two grown ups. What's your total weight do you think? And what did you think of the boat?
Shes about 5 ft 10 and I'm 6 ft 3, combined about 325 lbs. I sail it alone 95% of the time though. It's fun, very stable and very quick to rig which is nice when I have a couple hour window and want a quick session. It's a little slower than the sun fishes around here for comparison, and the sail is ugly. Everyone in the area knows the boat because of the colors and some confirm its ugly to me too.
@@robsinHL Impressive amount of space and speed in such a small boat. I'm toying with getting one to teach my son how to sail.
@@adamrejzlI think its excellent for that. It's also tough as hell.
FIST TIME SAILING !!!! WHERE IS YOUR BA !!!!
what is a BA
@@MomoSlice7 buoyancy aid
ahh alright fam
her first time, not mine ;) . Point taken though
@@robsinHL just a heads up but i believe for any boats there must be pfd/Ba for everyone
Two adults? Thumbs up or down?
Check out my other one with my fiance with me. We're both tall, it depends on your others mobility and comfort with being cramped. You can see a bunch by seeing how she sits
Thank you for posting these, I am thinking of buying that boat, so keep them coming ! :) I see the boat on a dock ramp at the end, do you get on the ramp sailing, or is the boat hauled on it after disembarking? Thanks again
I do both depending on the amount of wind and direction. With about 5 mph I can get the bow on it, jump off and pull it on the rest of the way, otherwise I get off at end of dock and walk it to its slip. I fell in numerous times trying to figure out the sweet spot. I have a ton of video despite august and September weather in the northeast.
Thanks a lot, for some reason I had missed your answer. If you have the time to upload more of these videos, that would be great :) I think I will buy mine in the coming spring. Good wind
I like the cut of your jib
I love this! So beautiful out there. Sounds like the perfect least-tippy starter sailboat out there! www.rssailing.com/project/rs-zest/
Pretty much yes! I'm going to be seeing how reliable it is... broke a part the other day and waiting for them to respond, but so far it's a great little dinghy. They make a bunch of them, so they try to market each one very specifically, the Zest is their "blond toe head" boat apparently. But it's basically a redesign of a couple others out there - one they made and the Laser Pico which hasn't been touched by laser in 20 years design wise. The Zest came out in 2017.
That's a rather lovely lake! Thinking of getting a Zest for the children and me...Less tippy than my Enterprise!!
Daniel Forde-Pogson Thank you, NJ has its beauty! It's very very stable when moving. We're very tall and I weigh 200lbs, whether it looks cramped is for you to judge, I don't think so. She insists on sitting on the deck, probably worried about getting smacked in the head still. The latest video probably shows the stability the best, we cruise around in 10mph winds and I sail in anything, as high as 30mph. Long term durability, tough to say, it's a year old model and I've had it 3 months. I broke a piece and am waiting for the part for a while too... If your kids are young could probably hold 3 people. With the jib sail they can become your first mates!
@@robsinHL Just got my Zest. Only had it out twice so far, but absolutely love it! Can't wait to get it out there again! Your videos sold me on that boat... What piece broke on yours?
@@rickvezie7824 excellent, congratulations! It's so stable and easy to rig, lots of fun. I broke the collar that the boom connects to on the mast. It was a 20$ part probably, riveted the new one on last month and as good as new again. I think I might have done it myself by dropping it on the dock. Dont think it was a result of sailing.
