  • In response to a few questions I've updated the Sharpening Auger Bits video. The original was my first attempt at a TH-cam video and left a bit to be desired.

+Dean O I was having a hard time finding a pan big enough to set some of the longer items in. It was taking a full gallon to get the parts covered. The Rust Removal System does it with a pint. th-cam.com/play/PLXlq5qGw1pepNSS5f6sy8TaSfDYvkxMK2.html

Vinegar makes me slobber too. Sweetums was washing car windows the other day with it and I was thinking either Salad or Pickles, or maybe Pickled Salad. One good whiff and.....................

Old Sneelock - Can you tell me, Do you re-use the vinegar or is it one use then throw away. Best Wishes

+UK Tony It depends on how much rust there is on the parts. I can get two uses about half the time.

Was that Apple Cider vinegar or regular? I thought 48 hours was a bit too long for Apple Cider vinegar immersion unless it's really, really badly rusted. Thanks for running this, I have a mixed set of auger bits that need attention from de-rusting to sharpening.

+GrandsonofKong It was apple cider vinegar. 24 is the usual time in the bath. These still had a little bit left after the 1st day in the bath so I left them until the next day.

My wife wants to know if vinegar will remove my grey hair or even the grey matter between my ears? Great video! Thanks.

Not recommended but offered as an observation.
If you use vinegar to remove the rust from a piece of tool steel, the vinegar will stain anything organic that it touches black. Thats why I started wearing gloves to clean the parts. I got tired of scrubbing off a layer of skin on my hands.

What fo you use to prevent flash rust?

+Ronny Julian Mineral spirits. In this case I just dipped the bits in the tray of mineral spirits that I was using to clean the breast drill that I had been working on. Once I have the bits clean and dry I use paste wax to seal them. It works quite well and lasts a long time.
