    As a Rafa fan, I have to say over the years my answer to the greatest rivalry has changed from Roger-Rafa to Rafa-Novak. Roger-Rafa is like a battle of opposites in every way, beauty vs the best, talent vs hard work.
    With Rafa-Novak, it's like 2 gladiators stepping out to battle every time. The level of tennis produced between these 2 is far higher than any other. Rafa and Novak have really influenced each other a lot and I hope to see as many matches between them before they retire.

  • @mainemceachern1521
    @mainemceachern1521 4 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    I found Nishikori's answer in Ferrer really interesting, especially as he leads 10-4 in their H2H. I'm guessing he looked to Ferrer as a stylistic comparator (they're around the same size, without any major weapons, but with excellent movement and consistency) and an inspiring example of a relentless, hard-working, resilient guy who became a very successful tennis champion despite lacking any major advantages. Rafa's answer was interesting too; he easily could've picked Nole as his greatest rival, given they've contested the greatest number of matches in the Open Era (56), they've played so many huge matches, and have such a close H2H (29-27 Djokovic), but I guess Rafa's rivalry with Roger will always hold a special place in his heart because it defined many of his first years on tour and Roger as World No 1 was always the standard Rafa was aiming for until he finally took the throne in 2008 (probably also helps that they genuinely like and hugely respect each other).

      Rafa is the hardest of the three players to get used to for sure. Djokovic is the only tennis player in history with enough amount of matches played against a peak/prime Rafa to have found a successful formula in beating him (mostly off of clay). Federer however, never really could beat Rafa at his peak from 2008-2013. So it's for sure the hardest prospect in all of (general) tennis to beat Rafa, particularly on clay.

    Not trying to hate nor discredit Novak' print in tennis history, but honestly he bloomed late when Nadal physically and mentally had a big downfall around 2015 if I'm not mistaken, prior to that, Nadal vs Novak was annihilation in favor of Nadal. Novak wasn't a amateur either and Nadal dominated him ridiculously. But for 3 years straight Novak started beating Nadal left and right, and thats the reason why he's almost on par with Nadal on win/loss and titles.
    But both in their maximum prime, Nadal would always beat Novak.
    Yes they are the "big 3" because Novak has put himself there. But honestly the true GOATS of Tennis are Nadal and Roger.
    Nadal's biggest rival will always be Roger not Novak. And Roger's biggest rival will always be Nadal.
    For Novak is Nadal and that pretty much proves my point. Also Nadal went pro two years earlier than Novak.
    Novak deserves huge praise for sure, but he would always be third to Nadal and Roger if all 3 were in their total prime. Regardless of surface too.

    • @Shahrukh563
      @Shahrukh563 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Roger if all three of them would be in their prime". Well said
      I remember watching Roger play as a kid and I used to hate how easily he used to win every match. Like there was no match of him. Even Nadal has to grill a lot to win a point against him...like he was that good. Nadal used to win even then because he was the king of clay but when it was Wimbledon, Roger used to dominate even Nadal like anything.
      So if you talk about clay then even all of them in their primes, they would be no match to Nadal. But overall Roger will be at the first position for sure.

    Federer is actually still the GOAT:
    -Most Wimbledons ever (8)
    -Most US Opens ever alongside Sampras (5)
    -Leads H2H against Nadal on hard courts 11-9 and on grass 3-1.
    Djokovic and Nadal: both had an age advantage. Federer was over 37yo in 2018 when Djokovic outlasted him in the H2H. No one can seriously say that Federer was on his prime. The other one is the King of clay best ever no doubt.
    But prime Roger Federer would destroy Djokovic, as he did three years in a row at the US Open in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
    Also, Federer holds the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1. 237 weeks (Djoker only 120), which shows how insanely dominant he was.
    People are so biased to see only the present and not the past. Prime Roger > prime anyone.

If we dont count 2015-2016 when Nadal was out of form and Djokovic was at his best, and 2017 when Djokovic was injured and with low confident. It's the rivalry with the most matches played, it's extremely close, it has the most matches played in finals (28) AND many were slam finals (equal to Nadal-Federer at 9). So overall, I have to agree.
      However, the Nadal - Federer rivalry from 2005-2009 was something really special. The contrast in styles and court preferences made it so much more exciting and iconic. In my opinion, the pinnacle of tennis rivalries.

    Some of these wanna-be fans call themselves as tennis fans but with absolutely no knowledge of the sport or what the players were going through in their lives and careers. Saw some comments saying "Nadal just doesn't wanna admit Djokovic is his biggest rival because of the lower h2h".. Bruh, he is literally 2 behind Djokovic, besides, Nadal is 10-7 against Djokovic on bigger stages in the slams, clearly meaning Djokovic only has a winning h2h in the smaller events (than slams) where HC is more predominant. Secondly, Nadal and Djokovic, even though playing 60 matches against each other, have absolutely no emotional background between them to even consider them as biggest rivals.. Maybe Djokovic has a few, but that's it.. When Nadal started his journey, Federer was the #1 and was winning all the slams except clay (especially on grass surfaces), while Nadal was winning only clay. Federer had a 5 year winning streak on Wimbledon, while Nadal had a 81 match winning streak on clay + 4 year winning streak Roland Garros until 2008. The emotional question arose after 2007 Wimbledon, that who is the better player? Nadal on clay or Federer on grass? They even made a battle of surfaces in 2007 where one half was clay, other half was grass, designed just for the both of them, which even tho, was a disaster of a match due to the issues with the grass that day, Nadal still won it in a tight match. And then the question arose, before 2008, as to who is gonna be the first to achieve the GS? Nadal outside RG or Federer on RG? It's also notable that Nadal played Federer 3 times in RG from 2005-2007, 2 times in the final and Nadal won all 3.. Federer also played Nadal in the finals of Wimbledon 2 times in 2006, 2007 and Federer won the both. So who was gonna conquer who first in their own yard? Federer on RG or Nadal on Wimbledon? 2008 was the year.. Nadal won Federer on RG for the 4th straight time, and then on Wimbledon, Nadal won a 5 setter, making him the first to achieve the answers for the questions prior. Not only made Nadal win his 1st ever slam outside clay, but also get the No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career, which Federer was holding captive for 237 straight weeks (4.5 freaking years). Nadal again went on to win the Olympics in 2008 and as well as AO2009, beating Federer to also wn his first ever hard court slam, where Federer was a 4 time champ in 5 years. Federer on the other hand was looking to equal Pete Sampras's record of 14.. He was having 12 and Nadal was the one who kept stopping him at the RG and Wimby 2008 as well as AO 2009 where Federer went onto tears because he was having 13 and was very close to achieve the Sampras record. Finally when Nadal lost in RG 2009, Federer won the RG and completed his career GS + also equalling the record and he showed that emotion after he won the match point in RG2009. He later went on to break the record in Wimby 2009. Nadal also had to cross Federer's record of most masters won and also the most GS win on a single tournament (Federer and Sampras had 7 in Wimbledon, Nadal took 8 in RG 2013). Nadal finished his career golden slam in 2010 and literally 90% of his bucket list of achievements have been completed in that era and during that time, Novak was just a 1-slam winner. Nadal started his academy in 2010 and invited Federer to open the academy because both of them were emotionally connected to each other when it came to the records they had to fight for. That is exactly why Nadal and Federer are rivals to each other even when they have only 40 matches while their rivalries with Novak are almost 60 and 50+.. You never consider something special and close to heart when there's nothing emotional in there. Nadal has absolutely no emotional or something he had to fight for or to achieve in his matches against Novak because he already achieved those in Federer era. And even during 2020, when Nadal got to 20 GS, he equalled "Federer's record" and not Novak's. The only thing about Novak-Nadal for Nadal is "ehh, we just have more matches.. that's all". But for Novak, its different.. Just like Federer for Nadal, it was Nadal for Novak.. Nadal was the #1, he had to beat Nadal to claim the #1 at Wimbledon 2011 i believe, and then he went on to have 7 straight wins over Nadal, which Nadal ended in 2012 RG.. that's the only thing Nadal has for him to call as "rival". Nothing more to it. Even when he equalled Federer's record, he didn't have to fight for it against Novak.. he won in 3 sets in RG2020, to make it an epic victory on equalling. And even on completing 2nd career GS, there's was no significance of Novak in that victory either coz Novak was deported. Still the match against Medvedev was an epic 5 setter and still had a more emotional value on breaking the record than on Nadal tying the record in 2020. Novak on the other hand, like i said, had to defeat Nadal to get #1 for the first time in his career and his first grass court slam, had to cross Nadal to claim the record for Masters, and even right now, he is chasing for Nadal's GS record of 21 to set his record. And he, same as Federer, was unable to capture French Open for 8 straight years from 2008 where he won his first slam, facing Nadal a few times in the finals as well. This is why Djokovic considers Nadal as his rival, even if Federer and Novak play 50 more times from now. Its not about "number of matches" alone.

    Most competitive rivalry (every surface of course): Djokovic v Federer
    Most competitive on Hard: Djokovic v Federer
    Most competitive on Clay: Nadal v Djokovic
    Most competitive on Grass (it's a tie): Federer v Nadal | Federer v Djokovic
    The overall best rivalry if we take all the matches from every surface has to be without a doubt, Djokovic v Federer.
    Fedal is the favourite one, but most of them were played on Clay. I think this rivalry needed more big matches in Wimbledon between the 2010's or even Nadal to compete in Halle more often.
    Djokovic v Nadal is one sided since years on Hard and Clay as well. Most competitive surface is Grass between those two and we didn't witnessed that much on that ground - unfortunately.
