I have a Niko and Roman Like relationship with my own cousin, and he’d blow up my phone every day and every hour and well, while it was annoying after a while, when my phone got blown up less, I missed it, and I can only imagine Niko’s pain from Not only having Roman never calling him again but the fact that Roman is dead, I actually almost cried at this ending

I'll have to agree now. Not a lot of comic relief in this game compared to the others. Plus, you have to sacrifice SOMEBODY at the end of the game, where in GTA V you can kill off a character in one game and still play as all three in another.

This hit hard, I’ve played GTA 4 since day one and I always chose revenge, so this is the first time I’ve ever seen this and it REALLY hit. Makes you realize how dark this game was

Big Smoke making a deal with the Ballas encouraged by C.R.A.S.H. to not only distribute cocaine on a wide scale, but essentially forcing GSF to work with the Ballas. Big Smoke is one of the four OGs that can control the fate of the GSFs. With Sweet being in jail and Carl exiled to Angel Pine, GSF fell. There's even side events called "Big Smoke's Cash" and you see GSF members working for Smoke and shooting you if you stop them.
Also, I'm not mentioning Ryder even though he is an OG, because his character got a little bit altered during the development of the game. Ryder was never meant to betray GSF. He was either suppose to be killed during the Green Sabre mission or exiled and help Carl out. Essentially replacing Ceaser's role. But because his voice actor had to leave during mid game development, they decided to make Ryder a traitorous character and eventually killing him off. Even though he's really irrelevant to the story line after Los Santos. Imo, I think they should have simply killed him off in the Green Sabre mission. Better to die as a hero than a traitor.

I finished this game for the 7th time a couple of days ago.
After every mission I always called Roman to see if there was a dialogue with him (sometimes he answers and Niko talks with him). I chosed this ending because I always made the revenge ending so I wanted to see this outcome.
When I finished this mission I subconsciously tried to call Roman, but his number wasn’t there anymore. It was depressing as hell.
Story wise this is a better ending though
@@vinylbuff1515 agreed. Obviously, the revenge ending is better for Niko's happiness, and I'd choose that any day but the deal ending felt better written. The speech he gave to Dimitri was great, especially compared to Jimmy which kinda felt cliche, and adding the scripted rain in the deal ending gave it a few more points.

I've played GTA IV probably around 10 times now over the past 8 years, 2 of which I've played over the past 8 months.
Only once have I ever chose the Deal ending as I genuinely welled up at Roman's death. This ending was written much better than Revenge, however now I see why Rockstar let the player have three choices in GTA V rather than merely deciding which of the main characters would die.

On a serious note, they'd have to make the game take place in the future. Every single GTA game released has taken place the same year that it got released in, so making GTA VI take place in the future would be pretty odd.

this ending would’ve made way more sense if it weren’t for the fact you make a deal with dmitiri knowing what he’s done, i get roman is the one who was telling niko throughout the entire story that revenge means nothing and that ultimately got roman killed but making a deal with dmitri feels just as wrong

The Deal ending is definitely the most tragic ending. The Revenge ending feels like the more satisfying ending, not just because it's somewhat of a happy ending, but because everything comes together.
For one Dimitri's death in Revenge is satisfying for a worthy antagonist like him, and that mission takes place on the ship Niko came in on the Platypus, so it's sort of a deja vu, end where it all began sort of thing which is also satisfying.
Plus Roman is a part of the final mission in Revenge & goes with Niko & Jacob in the chase after Pegorino. And it seems fitting that Niko, Roman, and Jacob, who are the protagonist, deuteragonist, and tritagonist respectively, are all together in & at the end of the final mission of the main story.
Also Kate plays a much bigger role in Revenge. Niko takes her to Roman's wedding & during the drive there they have a long talk where it seems like they're finally going to go all the way in their relationship & have a future together. Instead she gets killed by Pegorino when he accidentally shoots her in a drive-by when he tried to kill Niko, and avenging her is the catalyst of the final mission of the Revenge ending. In the Deal ending she doesn't even go with you to the wedding & calls you after the final mission in Deal where she says she's sorry for Niko about what's happened to Roman & asks Niko to call her & spend time with her, only for her to call a few days later to break up with Niko while saying she's sorry for it & what's happened to Niko & Roman as well as sending a goodbye email. There's not a future with her either way but in Revenge she plays a bigger role, but pick Deal if you want to save her. Also in Revenge Packie is part of the ending, when you get that phone call from him at the end where he's distraught over Kate's death & it also feels like you're doing it for him as well as Kate. In Deal on the other hand he's not involved at all, no post mission phone call, he's not at the wedding, his part in the story pretty much ends after the diamond exchange in the Deal ending.
Also perhaps the biggest reason is that Pegorino's death is better in Revenge. In Deal he kinda goes out like a chump, getting shot in the head by Dimitri & just being another one of his betrayal victims. Not that he deserves it but in Revenge his death is more dignified & he goes out like a G instead of a chump. Plus it's kinda cool seeing Pegorino, who's technically the secondary antagonist, take over as the main antagonist from Dimitri at the end of the game. Like Kate, Pegorino feels like he plays an overall bigger role in the story in the Revenge ending than he does in Deal ending, while also not diminishing Dimitri's role in the story as well. Also Phil Bell's story feels more complete in Revenge. After Niko kills Dimitri, Phil calls Niko & tells him that he understands what Niko did & doesn't really hold it against him as he didn't trust Dimitri either, before telling Niko the Pegorino Family is done & that he's getting out. Whereas in the Deal ending on the other hand, even though you do the Deal with him & he's a part of the Deal ending, it feels like his ultimate fate is more up in the air than it is with the Revenge ending.
It's also good in that Revenge could be the final mission in the GTA 4 trilogy, it's most fitting for Niko to end the trilogy instead of Luis, it's established in the final Ballad of Gay Tony mission Departure Time that Dimitri is dead, so in Deal the Departure Time mission is definitely the final mission of the trilogy. Whereas the way I see it, if Revenge is done then Departure Time can take place in between Dimitri's death & Roman's wedding.
And finally the future seems better & more clearer for Niko in Revenge then it does in Deal. Roman is sort of Niko's stability, if Revenge is done it seems Niko can finally settle down peacefully in America & get a permanent job as a cab driver for Roman in his cab business. He can settle down & be with his friends Jacob, Florian, and possibly Dwayne & be with his family Roman, Mallorie, and their soon to be child which would be like a nephew/niece to Niko & fittingly if it's a girl she'll be named Kate, and eventually he may meet a woman himself & start a family of his own in America. In Deal on the other hand it doesn't seem like he would have a future in America. By losing Roman, in addition to losing a loved family member Niko also loses his stability. He leaves a life of crime but he's still an illegal immigrant, between that & the pain of Roman's loss I'd say Niko would end up leaving America & go back to his home country which I guess is now Serbia & resuming his life there. He probably would feel like he doesn't belong in or have a place in America after losing Roman. Niko would still have some friends like Jacob, Florian, and possibly Dwayne, but Kate leaves him & Packie & Brucie go to Los Santos, it doesn't seem like there would be enough to keep him in America. The only family he would really have would be Mallorie & her's & Roman's child, you'd think he'd be there for her & her child, in fact who knows maybe they would even end up getting together. But ultimately I think Niko would feel too guilty for Roman's death & feel like it would be best to leave & not be a part of their life. He tells Mallorie that her child won't have to worry about anything, I think like Johnny did for Jim's wife Jackie & their kid, Niko will give Mallorie all the money he made, which between the heroin deal & bank robbery along with the other things he did would probably be around half a million, he'd give her that money so that she & her child will be financially secure for the rest of their lives before he leaves America. Also interestingly there's an unused email after the Deal ending where Niko's mother sends him an email where she says that she heard that Roman was killed, and she asks Niko to leave. Also Bulgarin is dead so he wouldn't have to worry about him anymore, and he found Darko, the traitor he was looking for so that wouldn't be a reason to stay in America anymore. Between all of that I think ultimately Niko would leave all his money to Mallorie & her child, and then leave America to go back to his home country & to be close to & take care of his mother & try to resume his life there.
Not saying either ending is the right choice, when I first played the game Deal was my first ending. I'm now playing the game again for the first time in almost ten years, and eventually I'll have to choose an ending again which will be a tough choice, cause whichever ending I pick I'll consider that to be my own official ending to GTA 4, and I'll try to pick it the way I did when I first played the game, when I didn't know what was going to happen, but knowing what I know now that's going to make it a lot harder.

A very well done in depth analysis I must say. One thing you didn't mention that I think most haven't is that while the Deal ending is more tragic, I feel it has one crippling flaw. The fact that Niko willingly works with Dimitri again imo makes no sense, after what Dimitri has done and knowing Niko's character, he wouldn't work with him again. That's why I think Revenge works best, it just fits Niko more to not work with Dimitri again.
The depressive atmosphere of Dark Grey makes GTA IV a legend. After many years of completing this game, I can still feel the resounding of Niko's epilogue, "This is what the dream feels like. This is the victory we longed for."

"Out of Commission" was the true ending of the game, but "A Revenger's Tragedy" really felt like the final mission.
Rockstar have confirmed that GTA 4 ending is still up to the player's choice and haven't canonise either ending. Below here is from Rockstar's Q&A session:
Q: Take the deal or get revenge? I know what I'd do but I wanna know what [Niko] would do. You designed him so you know him better than I do.”
A: That’s a very interesting question. The choices that you make in Grand Theft Auto IV while in the shoes of Niko Bellic are completely down to personal preference. Your conscience and curiosity help Niko to make decisions throughout the game, so we really don’t have a straight and true path for how the Niko ‘character’ would react in life or death situations - it’s all down to the individual who plays him, and our hope was to have a fairly even split in all of the choices, so they seemed like real dilemmas. In terms of outcomes (something Niko would not know at the time) there is a ‘best pathway’ which is the sort of thing we reveal when we do a tips post, but that is from a pure game design / mechanics perspective as some choices give you more advantages than others, not from the choices Niko might make at the time. Those are up to you.

@@genesisalexandria7506 Niko's Lifeinvader profile along with Roman's profile could just be a GTA 4 easter egg and not meant to be taken as canon. When Brucie shows up in GTA Online, he never even once mention Roman or Niko unlike how Tao Cheng said he nearly died in a resort where his dad died which finally confirmed that Ending C is officially canon. The writer is trying to avoid canonising one of GTA 4 endings to remain consistent with what they said about keeping GTA 4 ending up to player's choice.
Also, Packie never said anything about his sister, Kate, being dead. Kate was never mention at all in GTA 5. He only mentioned his older brother, Derrick, died before the events of GTA 5 if you pick him as the gunman for The Paleto Score. How Derrick died is never confirm since Packie didn't say how he died.

@@koruptor6396 Someone else can take over the business and retain Roman's name in the company name as a way to honor him after his death. It's possible Niko took over the business with Mallorie so he can lead a quiet life after crimes hence why Lester said he went "quiet".

Michael Hollick did an amazing job playing Niko, he was the best person to play Niko we could’ve gotten, he even did the Motion Capture so all the movements he was doing in cutscenes was him
His serbian accent wasn't spot on but i admit that he did a great job, you can hear the sadness and emotion in his voice in cutscenes such as this one or the one where he found Darko.

Possibly the biggest kick in the face the game could have pulled off. As the player, we naturally want to see Niko succeed, to live the "American Dream" that he longed for. All the murders he committed, the jobs he's taken, all leading up to that final "victory", and what does he have to show for it? The corpse of his cousin, the one person that was always there for him, the one person that Niko had when he had absolutely nothing else. Killed by the one person that Niko could have killed when he had the chance. It's kind of strange in a way, to have a series like GTA, with all the jokes and thrills of stealing and killing it's known for, be able to pull off such a melancholic ending like that.

I know revenge is the best option to choose, because this ending is not satisfying anyone. But, if you new player and too loyal to roman, you will pick this because you always hear roman advice, and that's regret you must deserved.

The fact that Roman died in his wedding day is really heartbreaking and now he's gonna watch his son grow up without a father
For me This is the saddest death in GTA history
No matter what anyone says this is canon ending for me and it fits perfectly with theme of the game
The rainy atmosphere and the music & dialogue are also fits perfectly as final mission
Most choose the other ending but the storyline is centered around Dimtri's continuous betrayal from beginning and he is better suited as main antagonist rather than Jimmy P whom we dont even meet till towards the end of the game
Also losing Roman is much more emotional and tragic than Katie who doesnt even have much conversation with Niko unless we call her for Hangout

Brucie was mostly a joke character throughout the game, but there's something about his phone call at the end that's even more sad and depressing than the others. It's similar to the feeling of sadness you would get hearing a child or a mentally challenged person talk about losing someone. I usually thought Brucie was over the top and annoying, but hearing that phone call casts him in a whole new light.
I hated him until I met his brother in TBoGT, then I realized who the real douche was.
