For note, your head-canon suggests that the Barry is a 2mt tank engine and is numbered 78010. However, that number was used for a class 2 Tender engine built in 1951. The class 2’s are practically very similar to the Ivatt 2mt tender engine. The only thing you’d need to change about your head canon is the number.
In my head canon, Barry was a ivat 2mt tank engine waiting for the cutters torch on barry’s island. But sire topham hatt rescued him last second, and brought him to sodor. He was repainted to a crimson red with NWR lettering. He didn’t want to be called Barry, and it reminded him of bad times, so he changed it to Arthur, after his old driver on his old railway, and is now the railway’s dedicated rescue engine, and is always out rescuing breakdowns and things like that.
I wonder if barry inspired the creation of arthur and arthur was made as an apology to christopher for him never getting a chance to make the engine he wanted.
The reason everyone assumed Barry was a tender engine is that it was said he was a 2MT from Barry Island Scrapyard, and only the tender engine 2MTs were at Barry in real life.
@elredlidercorrentinoamigod4126 I honestly don't know maybe cause I'm used to him being an Ivatt Class 2. It feels better for him imo, but if you like the tank version that's definitely fine I'm just saying
here’s my idea for a story introducing barry. bear decides to go to other railway in search of a new engine he comes across a tank/tender engine that’s due for scrap however bear manages to sneaks him out and brings to sodor where he becomes an official member and is given a new name barry. before you ask yes this story acts as a rewrite to rusty to the rescue.
I like to think Barry was a tender engine, but when he was in service he used to have a tender, but when saved was rebuilt into a tank engine by the enthusiasts who had enough fund to afford the steel to make the tanks and bunker and of course the booeys wheels to make him a 2-6-2T
My headcanon is that Arthur IS Barry! Here's how I think it went: Barry was one of the 2MT tender engines built for British Railways and ran mostly in the Midlands, so he rarely saw the sea. Upon withdrawal from service, Barry was sent to Barry Island scrapyard and was there for a few years. By the time the fat controller visited the scrapyard in search of a steam engine for his railway, Barry's tender was already cut up. The fat controller took pity on Barry and bought him, converting him to a 2MT tank engine at Crovans Gate Works. The name "Barry" became painful for the engine due to the traumatizing nature of the scrapyard so he was allowed to pick a new name, that being Arthur. Arthur would be painted in an LMS Maroon, a colour he'd never had a chance to wear and had a liking for. And the rest is as it was in Series 7 and beyond!
My HC for Barry: Barry is 78059. (The 2-6-0 that is being turned into the 2-6-2T) He first came to sodor in 1964, and worked there untill 2009, when Barry went to the bluebell to be converted into 84013
Here’s my headcanon: Before Barry was rebuilt as a tank engine and given his name, he was sent to the scrapyard in Barry Island, Wales, during the Beeching Axe in the 1960s. He was left in a cold, damp siding, awaiting an uncertain fate. That was until 1982 when Sir Charles Topham II needed another engine to run the Norramby Branch Line to increase goods and passenger traffic. He visited the Barry Island Scrapyard and stumbled upon an engine that had been left to rust. Sir Charles purchased the engine and sent it to the works for restoration and a complete rebuild. A few months later, it was finally restored and rebuilt into a "Mickey Mouse Tank." Barry was repainted in British Rail black and maroon-red lining and given LMS lettering on his side tanks, along with the number 13 on his bunker. Sir Charles named the engine Barry, after the scrapyard where he was found, and the name stuck. Barry enjoyed his new life on Sodor and still operates today on the Norramby Branch Line.
I personally prefer the BR Standard Class 2 compared to Arthur's class for Barry. The BR Standard classes were never touched on and benefited heavily from Woodham Brothers.
Personally, I would have Barry start off as an LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T, and later be rebuilt into a BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 after a nasty accident.
Well if that's the case then you should definitely check out episode 1. Where I talk about a certain OC of yours. Who just so happens to be one of my favorites.
The whole “tender or no tender” thing reminds me of Bertram, supposed to be a tank engine but the show’s budget made him a darker brown Duke and thus a tender engine.
Yeah Bertram and Barry have somewhat the same backstory in my head canon. Both starting out as tank engines but then being converted into tender engines.
I personally prefer the tender engine version of barry because, well the tank engine overpopulation. Its always slightly bugged me hiw many tank engines were on the railway
I think barry the rescue engine was actually going to be a to friend character. If he was a 2mt tank engine, he was probably replaced by bell, which is a 2mt rescue tank engine.
Just so you know, none of those engines whose numbers begin with "78" are either Ivatt or LMS. They were designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways in 1952, 4 years after the LMS ceased existing!
i can see how barry and arthur is the same character, it comes from your point about being named after the scrap yard simply put barry was renamed and repainted to be arthur
Well in my au headcanon Barry is also a ivat 2mt tank engine also side Arthur as well plus I think Barry and Arthur are both related in my au as well and he also arrived on sodor with other engines as well after NWR separator there self form BR in 1968
Head cannon sth bought an ivatt 2mt tank engine but the seller again gave him a barry. Sth thought he got a good deal but he still needed a ivatt 2mt so he got arthur
For some reason yes it is confirmed he's like a tank engine LMS Ivatt class II people got it mixed up with the tender engine class and decided it looked better, I can agree because the actual tank engine design for barry isnt confirmed yet like the wellsworth and suddery engines and will never be.
I like Barry being a 2mt tender engine that is what he is in my cannon he is also a maintenance engine he is a cocky prick is also sorta lazy and he and James hate eachother Gordon Donald and Douglas also don't like him he even goy himself painted NW Red just to piss of James.
When I discovered Barry's actual basis i did headcanon the tank engine to tender engine conversion
In my head canon, Barry is a tender engine
Agreed
Yes who would replace Gordon
agreed! tank engine barry is mid imo, i love tender engine barry
Same
I agree and disagree in my head cannon there are two barrys on sodor and both of them are mixtraffic engines

Like I said it's not perfect.

Nice head canon
@@StephentrainboyRailfanbrony thx
Barry from a Tank Engine to a Tender Engine was really genius in my opinion, I wonder how he & Arthur would interact.
Thanks! Even though it is technically recycled for my head canon I have for Bertram, but it still works either way.
@@UsefulEngine11 I see

Nice video mate, best wishes from the UK as always. Hope you're doing well. 😊
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the tender engine idea came from wildnorwester
Like most things in the fandom lol.
TENDER because I don’t want to let Awdrey down since he was scraped
The reason everyone assumed Barry was a tender engine is that it was said he was a 2MT from Barry Island Scrapyard, and only the tender engine 2MTs were at Barry in real life.
That’s become a bit of a myth in the fandom. There were two Ivatt 2MT tanks at Barry and both are preserved.
@@TidmouthYard Interesting, thanks for telling me
I know Christopher Awdry confirmed Barry was a 2MT, in my head he would look more unique as a tank engine.
I definitely prefer Barry as a Tender engine. It's more fitting, the tank engine just feels wrong 😭
Why it feels wrong?
@elredlidercorrentinoamigod4126 I honestly don't know maybe cause I'm used to him being an Ivatt Class 2. It feels better for him imo, but if you like the tank version that's definitely fine I'm just saying
I Also Prefer Barry As A Tender Engine And I Hate The Idea Of Barry As A Tank Engine
@suepoutre1736 Yeah, tender engine is just better for him in my opinion
It Makes Sense Because Barry Sounds Like A Tender Engine Name
I made Barry's role to be used for Arthur in my AU as the engine number 41248, an engine that was scrapped there.
I personally like barry being a tender engine
Tender, I will die on this hill
here’s my idea for a story introducing barry.

before you ask yes this story acts as a rewrite to rusty to the rescue.
I got a similar story for my headcannon, but with Rosie instead of Barry. I do have a rewrite of Stepney Gets Lost for Barry though.
Oliver?
More like escape ngl
@@Jediah-s6p well that’s what rusty to the rescue was based off of.

I'll go with tender on engine 😊
When I heard that Barry was supost to be a tank engine I was like. " Looks like everyone is gonna have to fix their series or head cannons."
My headcanon is that Arthur IS Barry! Here's how I think it went:

It’s a shame that he was not in the rws book
Hmm well WildNorWester did have a few episodes where he had Barry have PTSD but he named himself after the area to remember those who weren't rescued.
To me Barry will always be a tender engine but there's nothing wrong with him being a tank engine not in the slightest
I’m going to have him be a tank engine, it will be easier to make a custom of him from the same basis as Arthur
I imagine/headcanon Barry as a LMS Fowler 4P 2-6-4T in SDJR Blue, that’s how he is in my AU
To be honest I’d rather have him be a tender engine, because I think it fits him pretty good
Here’s my headcanon:

It's a theme used by WildnorWester for his version of Barry.
