In my headcanon, that engine is gordon. He hasn't been painted into the North Western Blue, yet. It's why he's so boastful in Gordon and Edward. He's just been painted blue, and he thinks that means he'll be the new express engine, and assumes as such.

in my HC, 87547 is Crovan's Original Number before he was purchased in 1925 was given NWR 34
and yes I do know that Crovan is T1E2H3's take on 87546 but since there might've been some loaned engines that went from 98460-98469, 87540-87549, 76620-76629, 65340-65349, the list goes on

You know what is probably true, Dalby just didn't know the timeline and just drew Henry in the illustration. I mean he's face is exactly Henry's.
He needed five bigger engines, three of which probably were pre determined by Awdry, so Dalby just decided to put the other big engine in the series as of then.

But, yet again, The Sad Story Of Henry in my universe takes place in 1923, because someone said the Three Railway Engines takes place in 1923. March 3rd of 1923 to specific.
So, I guess I unknowingly fixed this mistake in this illustration by mixing up the years they happen in. Edward's Day Out in 1922 and The Sad Story Of Henry - 1923.
But I also have Thomas arrive on Sodor in February of 1923, so I can explain his appearance in my remake....so yeah, Problem solving in its purest.

No dude, there was no Sodor when the book was illustrated, Awdry came up with all of the lore decades after TRRE was published. There was no timeline, the engines didn't even have any basis to them at the time, just inspiration, this is the reason why Percy doesn't have a basis, and why so many engines have so many differences from their basis.

Honestly, I've known this for awhile.
When Dalby drew up the illustrations for the Three Railway Engines, there are many back ground engines, all not based on anything in particular, just added to fill in the scenes and make Sodor feel more like a real place with an actual railway.
It should be noted that when Dalby drew the Green Engine in the sheds, he had Henry in mind. However, timeline wise it doesn't make sense for Henry to be there. A similar thing happened to the red engine that attempted to push Henry out the tunnel. It was based of James even though James wasn't supposed to be there.
These characters are now left to the fans to develop. I like to think the Green Engine was a GWR Castle Class. It could add a new dynamic between her and Gordon, the LNER A1. That's just my AU of course.

I already agree with you, ScorchZane. It's clearly stated in the Railway Series Timeline that Edward's Day Out takes place between The Sad Story of Henry and Edward, Gordon & Henry, which means Edward's Day Out takes place while Henry is locked in the tunnel. So therefore, the green engine can't be Henry.

With the tunnel supposed to be one bore according to the lore, Edward himself shouldn’t even be present in the Sad Story of Henry illustrations, as there was no tunnel for him to go through opposite to Henry’s. So I would scratch that out, however I see it likely Edward was indeed sidelined briefly for Henry, and finally for Gordon, and another engine leased from the Mainland to take Henry’s goods duties. Henry was meant for the express but that was given to Gordon.
So with his green paint, it’s likely this green engine could’ve came from either the Great Central, Great Northern, North Eastern, or even the Glasgow & South Western Railway in Scotland! The latter was absorbed by the LMS in 1923, and had a nice selection of green 2-6-0’s and 4-6-0’s that could’ve been leased to the NWR on trial. I see the engine likely being either a Manson 4-6-0, or an GSWR Austrian Goods, as Awdry himself had a model of it on his layout, which he briefly used as the basis for James. You can explain the Austrian Good’s existence by having him as the green engine, despite the illustration showing him to be a inside-cylinder 4-6-0, just say the wheel configuration was another Dalby error, as he once did with James in “Paint Pots & Queens.”

In my canon I have three green engines.
The 1st one was a G&SWR 403 class named Ozzy. A kind enough fellow, but one who met a brutal date when he was ordered to take a certain terrier to the scrapyard...
The 2nd one is named Kenneth Mc.Harris, (Officially named Highland Chief) who is an LNER C11 Atlantic, and the green engine in the illustration. Cocky, smooth brained, and loud, he gained the nickname of Calliope.
The 3rd engine is called Edo and he's, well, a one off Pacific from an off shore railway company who used old discarded GCR engine designs to make him. He's often described as a silent type who's willing to lend a buffer if necessary. But, it's best not to piss off the gingerly nicknamed "Frankenstein's steamer"...

  • @comicfan1324

I’ll admit, I personally prefer the idea of the three railway engines taking place in chronological order:
    1. Edward’s Day Out
    2. Edward & Gordon
    3. Sad Story of Henry
    4. Edward, Gordon, & Henry
Because that’s just how I interpreted the story when I read the book.
But I also can’t deny for a second that it makes more sense for the sad story of Henry to take place first. If Gordon was on the railway at the time, then why wouldn’t the controller have his strongest engine push out? Having Gordon come right after Henry’s protest makes the most sense.
The green engine in Edwards day out could just be one of the loaned engines or a visiting engine from another railway. And I for one will not complain about having more railway series characters for us to imagine stories for.

  • @SudrianRailFan
    @SudrianRailFan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Stopping to think about it, it really makes sense. The green engine that is illustrated in Edward's Day Out cannot be Henry, since in the timeline, Henry is still in the tunnel. But in fact the green engine has the same issues as 98462 and 87546, "unknown class". But up close the green engine looks like a 4-6-0 or 4-4-0 locomotive, like atlantic Robinsons C4 and B4 (or another one).

    • @pizzaplanettruck9761
      @pizzaplanettruck9761 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

It COULD be Henry. Look at the engine next to Gordon, and you'll see he has no outside cylinders. In the next two he does. The first one was probably before the day Edward was let out, as Henry would've had to have just been bricked up, if that was why Edward was let out.

I think it's most likely that the "5 other engines" line (and by extension "the Green Engine") have long been retconned. I doubt Awdry had a whole timeline in mind, and Henry wasn't even meant to be on the same railway as Edward and Gordon at first. Plus, Awdry does say that the illustrations are inaccurate to the actual stories, so I think all of that rules out any and all possibility of there being another green engine.

  • @jaanshersaeed4541
    @jaanshersaeed4541 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

I can assume both Middleton when asked to illustrate and Dalby to re-illustrate The Three Railway Engines just figured since Henry already existed he’d just be one of the big engines at the sheds in the first story along with Gordon making fun of Edward. Awdry of course didn’t have a set timeline for these stories yet and figured Henry stopping in the tunnel would be set the same year he decided for his arrival (1922) but didn’t realize it wasn’t correlating with when he decided the rest of the stories took place (1923) forgetting Henry was illustrated in Edward’s Day Out; that’s all I can think of really.

My thoughts on what happened with the early background engines:
-Green Engine (Raven A2 #2400 City of Newcastle “Harry”): Came to help with passengers on the mainline from the LNER in 1923 but when Henry was let out of the tunnel that year he returned
-1st Red Engine (Bridget, LNWR Claughton): Also came to help with mainline passengers in 1923 from the LMS (the red) but due to her size STH I felt she’d be too expensive to keep so in 1925 she left and James arrived in her place
-2nd Red Engine (Winston “Eagle”): Leased from Furness Railway in 1915 and helped on mainline goods but when the bigger engines came he returned to what was now the LMS in 1923
All three are now in a railway museum in Vicarstown
-87546 (Robert “Rob”) and 98462 (Howard “Howie”): Came on trial from LNER and were on goods because they weren’t trusted on passengers and they caused James’ wooden brake blocks to catch on fire with Edward and Henry finding out so they were sent away; they escaped scrap but rather than finding a home they just wander around Great Britain still screwing around and causing trouble
-The Little Blue Tank Engine (Tom): Leased from Midland Railway in 1915 and stayed a while shunting at Tidmouth but after James arrived he was purchased in 1925 and also got extended side tanks like Thomas but then the Aluminum Works purchased him in 1926 which is why he disappeared; he still shunts there to this day

Taking some creative liberties, the green engine in the background was no other than GCR 506, Butler Henderson, or Henderson for short. He was originally supposed to be on a ten year loan from 1923 to 1933 but when the Great Depression hit Britain, his loan was terminated early. You don't even have to use UnluckyTug's video as evidence for this, it was clearly stated in the IoS book (which was written by Awdry) that TSSOH took place in '22, and EDO took place in '23.
And yeah, Edward wasn't "retired" until after TSSOH, he was still working on the railway alongside Thomas and a few other engines (including W&S 1-4) when Henry was brought on.
It's baffling how so many people disregard the IoS book, because pretty much all of the necessary lore information for the RWS can be found in this book.
I absolutely agree with your second theory, well, part of it. We know there were five other engines in the shed in EDO, *but* the only ones we have any information about are Gordon, 98462 and 87546. And you're right, the illustrations aren't accurate, Awdry made this clear before. We don't even know if the "green" engine actually wore a green livery, he could've been a Midland Railway engine. I do think Dalby just used Henry as reference for this engine, but no, it's not actually Henry.

My idea of the loaned engines is as follows.
In 1922, the NWR was in danger of being absorbed into the LMS. The LNER, who were very much against this, daughter to prevent it by providing the railway with a series of locomotives on loan to help the railway out of its locomotive crisis. The engines loaned consisted of…
    1. Molly (GER Claud Hamilton)
    2. Alice (GNR class C1)
    3. Alled Greedy (LNER class B4)
    4. Alfred (LNER class B12)(Different from 98462)
    5. Crovan (LNER class B16)(Different from 87546)
    6. The Other Green Engine (LNER class B17)
The Thugs that had built Henry and his brothers, the infamous 98462 & 87546, got wind of this and loaned their engines as well, even going as far as unloading their “White Elephant” design on the Fat Director. We all know how it went from there.

Theory 1 makes sense, but I do think that’s what Awdry meant by two Henrys in 1922. Henry’s Flying Kipper crash and rebuild at Crewe happened in 1935. I think that similarly to how some people have the same names which sparks confusion, this Shed Henry was actually named Henry. But he was nicknamed Henry II because Henry I (the future NWR No. 3) arrived on Sodor and was likely built first, and also to not confuse anyone. He was sent away likely because to not be confused with Henry I. This is a loose theory with some holes and contradictions like: “Henry I or II could’ve had their names changed like how Lord Harry’s name was changed to Patrick.” But I still believe this and hope to change it to make more sense.

I think I know the truth about that green steam engine.
If you go to the TTTE wiki and look on the page about “The Three Railway Engines” They bring up the possibility that the green engine IS Henry and that the illustration depicting him with the other engines takes place before the sad story of Henry. The story “Edward’s Day Out” claims that Edward had not been out for a long time. He hadn’t left the shed back when henry hadn’t been walled in the tunnel. Edward’s appearance in “The Sad Story Of Henry” isn’t canon because there was only one tunnel at that time and the illustration is inaccurate. So in conclusion “Edward’s Day Out” happens after “The Sad Story Of Henry” but the first illustration takes place before Henry stayed in the tunnel and Edward still hadn’t left the shed after it happened.

To me, this mysterious would be a Highland Railway Castle class 4-6-0. If I were to pick which one, I would say HR No. 26 (soon to be LMS No. 14675) 'Taymouth Castle' as while built in 1919 and being the class leader, he has something of a superiority complex due to proving better than the HR's 4-4-0s, explaining his attitude towards Edward. As for what happened post-Sodor, he was scrapped in 1947.
Reason I picked a Highland Railway engine was because because of the livery, while darker than the one shown in the illustration but how many companies painted running boards proper red over Indian Red? 'Taymouth Castle' would be repainted into LMS Crimson Lake upon being returned.

that could just be that LNER fanmade number 3 apple green engine called Alfred, or 98642 because back in sodors history Alfred was first painted green and not blue so that other blue engine could be 87546 since when 87546 was built his hybrid was designed as a prototype and his livery was built in blue, the regular NWR livery, meanwhile Alfred kept his Green Apple LNER livery as a B12 but then got his blue paint done after him doing a serious accident which has done enough and broke his chances, but then if you think about it Alfred may had cylinders when he was built but got an overhaul by that accident (which was him crashing into the sea). So they removed his cylinders and made him get a normal side rod overhaul built. It is a fact that engines DO stay awake in their overhaul built as we see the blue engine called "the overhauled engine" which was getting one in one of awdrys books, and then later in their future they had to use a substance to make the engine fall asleep even though they don't feel pain by getting an overhaul. And don't get me straight and say "there's two blue unnamed engines tho!!" well one of them is 87546 or crovan, we for sure don't know if the other one is Alfred since he didn't get his livery changed yet, that could be another blue engine that was sent on sodor from the mainland, or here's a theory, it could be that overhauled engine even tho they seemed nice and peaceful at first but probably had a backlash sad backstory where he used to bully other engines like Edward and Gordon, and that red engine that tried pulling Henry out the tunnel could've been Eagle or Johnson.

I feel like it's just an illustration thing like it always tends to be with Dalby. That's the simplest explanation. Henry, Gordon, and Edward are the three main characters of the book, and are all shown in the illustration along with Middleton's randoms. It'd be like saying the character in the first illustration of Thomas the Tank Engine isn't Thomas, and is some similar engine due to some random technicality. Using Awdry's logic, they're real events that happened, and the books are just books made as adaptations of those events, with some liberties. Certain stations apparently don't look as they're illustrated, so it's just as likely that *is* Henry and someone goofed, or changed something later.

Ok seriously I get what your saying, but I personally don’t think this is Henry due to the sad story of Henry taking place before Edward’s day out

Alfred is a fan creation. He came out 64 years after Edward's Day out in Sodor Dark Times. Upon closer inspection that Green Engine might be an LNER A1/A3

Hello ScorchZane, How are you? Loved this analysis video, and a lot of your videos are pretty great. I assume you've already checked out some of my videos from your past comments on my videos, and i was wondering if you could ever do a review/analysis on my series/channel for a future video as im very curious on what people think of my content and if you do ever do a video like that i could if you want give you some information on how and why i started a series, what direction im planning to take it and a insight about future episodes and whatnot, again this is just an idea i had you don't need to do it i just thought it would be a good video idea
