Malaysian here. When I saw people struggle with pronunciation, I always ask them to repeat the vowel for few minutes, like āáǎà for 2-3 minutes. It helps most of them increase the accuracy of tone, I hope it will help anyone who is interested in Mandarin.

I just started studying mandarin a month ago. I found a chrome add on that lets you watch mandarin subs with pinyin and English subs too. It’s getting more and more useful the more vocabulary I learn. I’m stressing out a little on the tones. So many people say to study them right up front but I don’t really know how to. I use SRS flashcards for vocabulary and if I grade myself wrong because I forgot the tone even if I remember the pinyin etc it’s too hard and my head will likely explode. I don’t want my head to explode so I need to be careful.

      Update? How are you going?
I've been studying mandarin for 3 weeks and tones have gotten easier for me to grasp (and I stopped stressing too much) after I started learning them by group and not individually (as recommended by a youtuber). What I do is I take a word or short phrase and learn how it sounds all together. I practice the right tones multiple times. Don't focus on the individual tones too much because you won't be saying each one individually in real life and the tone might change depending on the tone change rules/character next to it. But if you want to memorise it one by one, I recommend saying it out loud while "drawing" the tone level with your hand at the same time multiple times. But, practice saying the word/phrase out loud first as a group multiple times (to master the correct pronunciation as a whole and make it stick) and then break it down. Use pleco or yt to help guide you. Not only you will memorise how to say a phrase correctly, you will also be able to memorise the individual tones. Practice with long sentences too once you get comfortable :)

    I recommend watching donghias!
You could basically call them chinese anime, but it's better if you avoid the term because sometimes those circles can get quite messy if you don't respect the terminology - many of them are short (20 minutes long generally) so it helps if the one hour episode is initmaditing (I love dramas but I just cannot sit for so long and watch it straight in one viewing) .
If you watch it in their youtube channels (Tencent or bilibili) there are simplified chinese subs AND english subs! There is no pinyin though but it helps to recognize characters.
Finally, put down yours goals with Chinese - I want to read chinese content so jumping straight to characters is important but since caligraphy is not really urgent to me my written hanzi can look like chicken scribbles (I practice the strokes in apps because I hate writing them on paper). Also, when learning a new character SEARCH FOR SENTENCES WHICH HAVE IT. If you negate this you are going to end up knowing every single character and still not understanding what's going on.

Nobody use writing now especially Chinese. If I need use writing I use pin yin or spelling phonetic Chinese writing. Woa loa. Now I speak three languages fluently as Vietnamese, Chinese and English by this method.

big chinese media networks like tencent or bilibili have a lot of shows with english and chinese subtitles free on youtube! you should check them out, it really helps a lot.
right now i'm watching a few animes
    • "the king's avatar" -> about a retired esports star who plans a comeback with his own team
    • 天官赐福(if you don't have a chinese keyboard search for tgcf) -> a demon and a fallen god expose god's who have skeletons in the closet. they also flirt a lot. i love it A LOT.
    • soul land -> a fantasy adventure hero thingy, with lovely characters and spectacular fights. it's a 3d anime
    as for dramas
    • the untamed -> cultivation story, basically fantasy set in ancient china, also a lot of gay yearning
    • Dr. Qin -> a crime drama about a pathologist

Huh, that's an interesting video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

Tapi lagi2 aku stuck sama yg namanya tujuan.
Kalau boleh, sharing donk, apa sih yg jadi pendorong semangat seorang Jennifer Liem utk terus belajar bahasa mandarin?
    Terima kasih ya ^^

      你好,😀
I also recently started learning Chinese.
I had a very big challenge regarding where to start from
But now, I've gotten it right💃.
Remember, Chinese is divided into 6 HSKs. I recommend you start with HSK 1. I can say more if you're interested. Between late last month (March) and this now, I've been able to learn how to pronounce, read and write 50 HSK 1 characters and even how to use them in a sentence. Its really amazing 😊
And by the way, I also just started my TH-cam channel. It's all about arts, creativity, vlog and of course, I'd be sharing my Chinese Language learning journey on this space😊😀
      I'm so excited.
