Hi there, I am Vietnamese, I've studied English for a long time, and recently I've been learning Chinese. It's such a beautiful but difficult tongue. It's been 2 years, I hope you got better your English.
As a Chinese learner, I also advise to start with the radicals then learn whole characters, because the radicals are the building blocks of every Chinese character so memorising them first helps you almost instantly remember any Chinese character you will meet. When I began learning Chinese, I started directly learning whole characters without knowing about the radicals so it was much harder that way, thats why I'm still so bad at writing in Chinese.
I am a Chinese student in the US. I 100% agree with what you said! When I was a child, I start the characters with radicals first in school. That is 100% great advice. I am also learning English now by trying to remember more prefixes and suffixes so that I can identify unfamiliar words. You can understand 80% of Chinese words if you remember Chinese radicals well. left the 20%, cause most Chinese don't even recognize them. Chinese started with pictographs, so remember what they look like when you memorize the radicals! You will be good!
@@chengbowen8264 This is not the only reason I'm not that good at writing Chinese.I use Chinese keyboard with Pinyin input so when I have to write in Chinese by hand I still forget the characters because I didn't have exercised handwriting enough, even though now I know the method of learning Chinese characters. On the other hand, that's right.Sometimes I'm surprised that I can guess the correct meaning and pronunciation of a character based on its radicals even though I never learned it before. It helps a lot with reading.

I found “Colloquial Chinese” by Qian Kan along with the audio. By lesson 6 I was starting to talk and understand Chinese with native speakers. I was truly impressed with how useful this course is. There’s also Colloquial Chinese 2 by the same author.
Totally agree on vocabulary and some grammar as very important first steps. One thing I would highly advise against is learning how to physically write Chinese words if you don’t find any joy in doing so. If you like it then more power to you. However it’s rare to write words in the time of online learning. I would instead recommend learning basic pinyin with the keyboard. It’s really useful and just takes repitition to become proficient.
Yea, but you still need to recognize the words first so might as well just write it all out as that's a good way to memorize their appearance and pinyin.
Indeed, I think it can be a little overwhelming to try to learn so many aspects (listening, reading, speaking, writing, pinyin, tones...) at first, as I'm a beginner I'm focusing more on the reading and hearing parts, but I try to draw the characters on a simplified version (你 becomes a 1 followed by a T with three dashes, lol).
I grew up learning chinese and can't imagine actually learning from scratch DAMN. It's a lot more challenging when you're older. There's a pinyin alphabet that Chinese school children learn before they learn characters. And pinyin is actually very iterative, once you learn the sounds, master the tones, I would say compared to English, there's a lot fewer sounds to practice. Hi. Like you, I am also self-studying Chinese, Japanese and Korean. But as of now, I just only know few basic words and phrases. I am so amazed that you managed to learn those three languages at the same time(?). I also wanted to be like you because since I was a kid, I already love to learn foreign languages. But when I tried to study those three languages at the same time, I got confused. I think I should study them one by one. Now, I am focusing on Chinese language. But I am having a difficulty in writing Chinese characters. It's so hard. Really. It's not as easy as learning Hangeul haha. I really wanted to learn more and improve. I hope that someday, I can also communicate in Chinese confidently like you :) Jiayou!
hey Lindie, I just wanted to let you know that your Chinese accent is quite good. What is especially impressive is that you have managed to learn so many languages, and hold yourself to high standards of pronunciation and proficiency. To be honest, Chinese is the only language I’ve seriously pursued and though I’d love to learn more languages I haven’t even become proficient in my second language (Chinese). Awesome channel and happy language learning! :)
I was stuck as a beginner in mandarin for years. I have made rapid progress since using a combination of Skritter (writing turned off), Standard HSK series of books and (most importantly) reading graded reader books on Pleco. Comprehensible input is the only way. I use an iTalki tutor for my output in making daily conversation. Working on HSK 5.
I have just discovered you and I love your videos; they are always a source of motivation. I am a language lover even though I don't speak many languages but I will definitely focus on this again. Thank you very much! :3
I‘m helping my friends learning Chinese now and I made some videos on my own. I fully agree you that you need to start with basic grammar and sentence structures, once you know some fundamental things, you have more confidence to continue learn, but pronunciation and tones are also very important in Chinese.
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I love all your videos 😍 it's really motivated me to keep learning language. I currently learning Mandarin but sometimes I feel lazy 😅 also I still practicing my English. can you make a video about "study with me for Mandarin" or "Mandarin notebook tour"? or any video for study Mandarin . I have try to search those kind of videos for Mandarin on TH-cam 😢 most people more interested to learn Korea and Japanese 😅 Thank you , from Malaysia 💕
I studied beginner korean course before I started studying mandarin. There are many korean words that are borrowed from chinese. It made my memozariation of many chinese words so much easier. The fact that not many foreigners study mandarin actually makes me motivated to learn it cuz I feel like it makes me unique or something.
I found Mandarin Corner channel youtube helping me to learn Mandarin from scratch. It's Indonesian channel but I think there's no much different from our language so you can understand it easily
Hi, I am Korean and I I study Chinese living in Toronto, Canada. I tried to help my son to learn Chinese so that he can introduce himself in Chinese. We are making some videos but not easy. Thanks for your great videos. 😀
I've been learning for about 5 months and have only done conversational (no writing!). I find that it's a lot less intimidating to start this way, as you can out off the characters for a bit, and when you do do them, you'll know exactly how to pronounce each word and thus will better be able to associate the character with the word!
An app that I find useful as well is DailyMandarin, you can write the word using pinyim or english and it teaches you how to draw the chinese character (with stroke order and everything).
Best way to start learning Chinese in my opinion is - - - - - drum roll please - - - - - Hello Chinese App - - - - for Android or Iphones. At least 1 million people who started with it would agree with this.... This is not a paid commercial, just sharing my enthusiasm.
Hello Chinese app, I have used before. About for several months. Yes really good. And new app that I try is Chinese Skill. Wow also good app! Recommended!
I am learning Chinese recently, and I think people should also know some Classical Chinese so that you could better understand native expressions. Like: I love three things in this world. Sun, moon and you. Sun for morning, moon for night, and you forever Means: 浮华三世,吾爱有三; 日、月、与卿; 日为朝,月为暮, 卿为朝朝暮暮 And if you read out, you could feel the rhymes.
I'm not learning chinese but after i learned korean and japanese i think i'm gonna start learning chinese :) thanks for ur video! It rlly inspired me to learn chinese!! ;*

Thanks for the tip Lindie! I started learning Mandarin in April 2019. Doing everything but lacking conversations with a person. 2020 will be that goal. 🙏🏼👍🏽
+exo legend nice to meet you! For pronunciation I think it's just important to listen to native speakers a lot and repeat what they say. Watching movies and tv is a good idea. Good luck!
Hi, nice to meet you. I watched your videos for the first time. I’m inspired your thinking how to study Chinese. I’m Chinese and English leaner. I’m so currently studying right now as well. It’s easy to talk your English and Chinese. Thanks a million.

But you need to come here and study with professionals if you want a workable level of Chinese. I appreciate your passion, please keep working on your Chinese.
Your pronunciation is kind of off but that’s probably bc you’re learning it now lol. This really motivated me try to learn Chinese again. I’ve tired before but gave up bc i felt too forced to do it. I might try again soon :)

I used to be fluent in Chinese, but then I got caught up in a lot of other languages, and I didn't practice for a while. Do you have any tips for regaining your skills?
Hi Lindie, I've started learning Mandarin(slowly but surely) and wanted to know where did you get your textbooks(in stores or online) I'm also South African so good language learning bookstore recommendations would really help. I've tried looking for Chinese artists, but haven't found any that I liked so far if you could give me some artist recommendations as well that would be great! Thank you for your inspirational videos💕
As a Chinese,I could recommend u some singers fomous in China. Why don't we help each other?i think you will learn Chinese easily.cus Chinese blood is flowing in your body.23333.
At Uni we're using Colloquial Chinese (T'ung & Pollard), it's 2 books - one focuses on grammar with explanations on each speech pattern or grammar point (only Pinyin, no characters), and the other book is all about writing and reading and shows the stroke order, meaning and pinyin of each characters. The books reflect eachother, the speech patterns you see in the character book is explained in detail in the grammar book along with the pinyin for the characters. There's also dialogues, sketches, etc. It's a great set of books and our 老师 considers it the best text books available. It gave me a great foundation.
Merci beaucoup c'est exactement la video dont j'avais besoin ! Et oui je me permets de te parler français maintenant que tu commences à avoir un bon niveau de langue ;)
I am currently learning Korean. Your videos have been very helpful, even though this a video about Chinese! Duo Lingo has helped me tremendously so far in helping me identify sentences ( Not advanced sentences, as Im an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER!) and help me with my pronunciation. I have also been using an app called Drops, which helped me learn Hangul and learn individual words. Anyways, I would like to say that you are doing a great job and keep it up!
+Carmelia Macpherson it depends on which one you're learning. Standard Mandarin used in mainland China is generally written in Simplified characters. Cantonese and Mandarin used in Taiwan is written in traditional. I use traditional because most people I talk to are from Taiwan, and the characters have much more meaning that's been taken away in simplified.
린디 Lindie Botes just one thing to correct. You can't really "write" Cantonese in a different way than mandarin. They both use the same characters. People in hk use traditional mandarin whereas people in canton (Guangdong) use simplified ones.
In my opinion, if a foreigner wants to be good at Chinese, the first thing is mastering tones. Everything else is secondary. Most Chinese people don't care how many hanzi you can write or vocabularies you control, but if your pronunciation is not normal, your Chinese level will be thought basic
For a Chinese show I would recommend Idol Producer. There's eng subs on the channel Idol Producer Subs #2. There's music in it so I printed out the lyric to up my vocab. It definitely motivated me to learn Chinese more

How’s it been going for you?
I am learning chinese, japanese and korean as well
你好琳迪! 我非常喜欢你的视频,你的建议和你给我们推荐的网站和应用都很有意思,我觉得对汉语学者很有帮助。我本人是希腊人,自从2009年因为很喜欢中文而当汉语老师。我一看见还有别人跟我一样喜欢汉语, 我就非常高兴!加油!
Hey can you be my friend? I am learning Chinese and I want someone to communicate with
Tandem is also a great alternative to HelloTalk . I've managed to filter my results and find people who live close to me to practice with!
+scottieglot good to know! Recently HT has been really laggy for me and I get too many unwanted chats, so maybe I'll try Tandem! 謝謝你
I started using Speaky. It's free and easy to filter out the creeps!
hey Lindie, I just wanted to let you know that your Chinese accent is quite good.
I'm a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese! 謝謝妳分享給大家很多學習語言的技巧!
I have try to search those kind of videos for Mandarin on TH-cam 😢 most people more interested to learn Korea and Japanese 😅
Thank you , from Malaysia 💕
idk. Hey! I’m a fellow kpop stan who is learning Chinese. If you like we can learn together! 😊
Here a thumbs up 👍 from me too.
I want to learn Chinese too !
your grammar and vocab is great but your intonation isn't very right but it's almost there !! 加油!💘💘

That means keep going right? Don't know read and right, I'm failure as a Chinese person.
@12345soccerguy definitely not haha
I've been learning for about 5 months and have only done conversational (no writing!). I find that it's a lot less intimidating to start this way, as you can out off the characters for a bit, and when you do do them, you'll know exactly how to pronounce each word and thus will better be able to associate the character with the word!
She’s so cute when she speaks in chinese 😊
I'm from Vietnam. It's really helpful but why I haven't known about your video until now. You're so friendly and excellent. ❤🤗
I'm a Chinese and I don't speak Chinese, I speak Viet 😅
i'm studying Korean, what am i doing here😂 xD
Same, but chinese is also cool, and the place where most of korean culture came from.
I'm learning both but I don't know what I'm doing so oops

@explorer thanks a million!
I am learning Chinese recently,
and I think people should also know some Classical Chinese so that you could better understand native expressions.
Like:
I love three things in this world.
Sun, moon and you.
Sun for morning, moon for night,
and you forever
Means:
浮华三世,吾爱有三;
日、月、与卿;
日为朝,月为暮,
卿为朝朝暮暮
And if you read out, you could feel the rhymes.

I’m so happy to find your channel 💓💓
Wish if u talked more about how to learn the pinyin and pronunciation ㅜㅜ

+exo legend nice to meet you! For pronunciation I think it's just important to listen to native speakers a lot and repeat what they say. Watching movies and tv is a good idea. Good luck!

If anyone is interested in improving their spoken Chinese and willing to help me with my English, feel free to contact me. We can either skype or meet in person if you're also in Tianjin. Also I'm learning Korean, and got great tips from this channel. Thanks Lindie!

Hi, I love your videos. you could do a self-study for japanese? ¡Please!. How did you increase your conversational level in Japanese?
+Anderson Steven Mendez Chipatecua hi! I have a video on tips to learn Japanese and they're all applicable to self studying, so please take a look at that! 💖

I also started self studying Chinese in the beginning, but found that it was so limiting when I came to live in China 8 years ago. I think it’s so cool that you love studying Chinese too. But you need to come here and study with professionals if you want a workable level of Chinese. I appreciate your passion, please keep working on your Chinese.
I'm definitely enjoying learning Chinese from native speakers around me. This is an old video. I live in Singapore now :)

Your pronunciation is kind of off but that’s probably bc you’re learning it now lol. This really motivated me try to learn Chinese again. I’ve tired before but gave up bc i felt too forced to do it. I might try again soon :)

Great tips and good luck with learning chinese! 😊 It's always difficult especially for beginners but with plenty of regular practice, you can do it 👍🏼
Hi Lindie, I've started learning Mandarin(slowly but surely) and wanted to know where did you get your textbooks(in stores or online) I'm also South African so good language learning bookstore recommendations would really help. Please do a video for learning korean!
+Tim I have one for how I learn Korean vocab, a few language lessons. Please take a look through my videos :)
妳的普通話說的還不賴~繼續加油吧
You got lovely Chinese characters in the end of video! You know what, your writing has a personality of seriousness and perseverance! 学霸! 👍 😀
Merci beaucoup c'est exactement la video dont j'avais besoin ! Et oui je me permets de te parler français maintenant que tu commences à avoir un bon niveau de langue ;)
Fabien Dane moi aussi, j’étudie le français 😃
I am currently learning Korean. Your videos have been very helpful, even though this a video about Chinese! Duo Lingo has helped me tremendously so far in helping me identify sentences ( Not advanced sentences, as Im an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER!) and help me with my pronunciation. I have also been using an app called Drops, which helped me learn Hangul and learn individual words. Anyways, I would like to say that you are doing a great job and keep it up!
For writing chinese characters in android keyboard, there is traditional and simplified chinese, which do I use?
+Carmelia Macpherson it depends on which one you're learning. Standard Mandarin used in mainland China is generally written in Simplified characters. Cantonese and Mandarin used in Taiwan is written in traditional. I use traditional because most people I talk to are from Taiwan, and the characters have much more meaning that's been taken away in simplified.
린디 Lindie Botes thanks Lindie!!!
린디 Lindie Botes just one thing to correct. You can't really "write" Cantonese in a different way than mandarin. They both use the same characters. People in hk use traditional mandarin whereas people in canton (Guangdong) use simplified ones.
TRADITIONAL PLEASE
Lindie Botes wait do Taiwanese use Cantonese? I thought only people from Guangdong and Hong Kong use it
In my opinion, if a foreigner wants to be good at Chinese, the first thing is mastering tones. Everything else is secondary. Most Chinese people don't care how many hanzi you can write or vocabularies you control, but if your pronunciation is not normal, your Chinese level will be thought basic
You are soooo smart! so cute😍😍😍
For a Chinese show I would recommend Idol Producer. There's eng subs on the channel Idol Producer Subs #2. There's music in it so I printed out the lyric to up my vocab. It definitely motivated me to learn Chinese more
I think it's really important to enjoy language learning process, another show I recommend is "Youth with you" it's really interesting (maybe not as interesting as idol producer 😩🥰) and to add Chinese dramas to the list
Thank you for telling me about LingoDeer. I just downloaded and am already learning lots of new things! Hopefully one day I can write this comment in Chinese!

Why do i need to learn how to write characters? I was told even Chinese people just type everything anyway.
as long as you can read chinese though you do not need to know the stroke orders. I usually will write a few times to make cue cards but aside from that i just use a pinyin keyboard
We still write the letters out when we are taking notes or writing letters and stuffs
