  • In my latest art tutorial video, I dive deep into the world of white art supplies, comparing over 40 different products to determine which ones excel in opacity and mark-making over watercolor and acrylic paints. From white paint pens to markers, pastels, and pencils, I test each product to uncover the top performers for artists seeking clarity and vibrancy in their work. Join me as I share my insights and reveal the clear favorites, including the Posca Pen, Archer & Olive Acrylograph pens, Copic Opaque white, Bleed proof white, Liquitex professional heavy body white, Mungyo Oil pastel, and the Blick matte white paint. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just starting out, this comprehensive guide will help you choose the best white art supplies for your creative endeavors.

Thanks, Denise! You saved all of us a lot of $ by going through your stash and comparing all the white products. I was laughing as you reached off camera for yet another set and then saying you probably had more white stuff in your art room somewhere.

I've seen other white pencil comparisons and the Derwent Drawing white is also very opaque. Derwent has SO many lines of pencils I can understand not having/knowing them. (I'm sure it also doesn't help that the name could be confusing for search engines. Would probably want to put quotation marks around the name so it knows they need to be right next to each other, in that order.) I like the other muted, earthy tones in that line as well. I hope I've enabled you to add to your art supplies 😊
Oh, and the Caran d'Ache Luminance. 😅

Hi Denise !!!! I use color pencils a lot and the very best two really opaque White are : 1. Chinese White, Derwent drawing 2. White Caran D'Ache.
The Derwent one is absolutely fantastic !

Kuretake white ink is amazing. It stays white, easy to control, doesn’t fade like Bleed-proof does.

I also keep my white china marker close, writes on anything. Bleed proof is definitely a fave, because i can thin out for more transparency, if needed. Also my signa uni ball pen. Thank you for doing this!!! Was always curious, but didn't want to purchase a bunch just to test. You're awesome!!!!

What a great video! I remember when I first started art journaling many years ago having the same question. I ordered a combo pack of white markers from jet pens to start out with. I don’t even remember what was included. Posca has always been my go to. The Uni Ball Signo is one of my favorites as well. I remember also liking my Arteza, but I always seem to forget about it. Sarah Renae Clark, the creator of the color cube, has done a bunch of these videos over the years. Also very helpful. Thank you.

After watching this video, I watched a Sarah Renae Clark (Color Cube) video which she did last year on the same subject. Her top choice was Artistro white pens. So I went to Amazon and purchased a set of five different sizes. I just tried them. They are so wonderfully white!

I’ve also noticed that it depends what you’re mark making on and if it is completely dry. I have heard that it takes about 3 days for acrylic paint to dry completely.

I pulled out a few whites myself because you compelled me to. Here's what I found Sennelier's Abstract Matt White rocks as well as Pebeo Matt Pub White,; Nova's Titanium White Acrylic paint; Liquitex Concentrated Medium Viscosity Artist Color Acrylic Titanium White; So Golden Pop Flat Matte Acrylic Titanium White; Kuretake White Ink 30;; Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 White 880 Pencil and lastly Dr. Oh. Martin's Bleed Proof White . These were a few of the whites at arms leanth that I tried. Oh another good one that I forgot to add at the top was Golden Acrylic Gesso..
Like you, I have a plethora of whites, but thought I might add some you hadn't tried during your presentation.
    You Rock Denise!
We're all so much more informed and free in our creative pursuits because of your style of teaching and guidance.
I know I have so many more fun things to work with because of you even though you say to use what we have. I can't help but experiment with new and yummy mediums.
I'm a mixed media fan that's my rationalization. Do we have any other juicy rationalizations out there? I can't seem to live without them😁

Dotting tools are used mainly in the nail care industry, and equally in manuals painting. One does not get dots in clay persy as they would be more like indentations in the clay.

LOL I’ve been so bummed out to have to come back to my pieces and re-do the dots when they have sunk into the paper! I’m going to try the Pitt pencil and the ink. I wonder if it’s too thick for a fountain pen….perhaps with a stub nib? Hmmm…..maybe worth a try. Re-dipping every few dots would probably drive me insane! Thanks again!!!!!!! You’re the best!!!!!

Thank you for this! I love playing with different opacities of white! Sometimes I’m wanting to mix a few different ones, such as with stars (some are “brighter” than others, some are farther away), or to create some visual texture. I see some new ones I’ll need to try!
I do have a question: I recently got some “matte gel medium” to experiment with. I’ve had fun making my acrylic paints a little more transparent (for more subtle stenciling), but I am so very new at this. Have you played with this medium? Opinions, thoughts, ideas?

Posca does not work that way all the time even when new. I've tried it on many paints (WC) and it is not consistent . Need your various products; maybe its the paper; is your drawing dry. Hard to tell. Thank you for this video.

Yeah - you'll just have to experiment to see what works for you! These are just some of what I had on hand to test out and see what I liked. 😊
