    A bank holiday weekend, really hot weather, a seaside town and Leeds are playing, needing a point to go up to the first division. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to see the potential for trouble. It didn’t help that it was played at Bournemouth as well which wasn’t the biggest ground, even back then. Which meant that Leeds were only allocated 2,000 tickets.

      I agree. Although when the fixtures were compiled for the 1989-90 season, the respective situations Leeds & Bournemouth found themselves in come the final day, obviously couldn't have been envisaged at the time. But still, in view of the other factors you stated, then the whole thing was in effect a power keg, just waiting for the fuse to be ignited.

"There's trouble" I said "where, there's no trouble"..! I said come in and keep calm or you're going to cause a problem.I opened the gates and they said "nick him, obstruction"..
    Great I was first one arrested and police got their wish,trouble =overtime..Just like the miners strike.

    Thought for the day - Bournemouth's last game of this season v Everton presents an interesting scenario, if Bournemouth lose Leeds United will be relegated - Just saying!

  • @andrewc4612
    @andrewc4612 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this game had all the ingredients not necessarily for disaster, but certainly trouble on a pretty large scale. The fact that Leeds needed a result in order to win the Div. 2 title/promotion, while Bournemouth were also in need of a result to try and avoid the drop, was surely always going to lead to a tense occasion. Although when the fixtures were compiled for the 1989-90 season, such a scenario couldn't obviously have been envisaged, when Bournemouth v Leeds was scheduled for the final day. But in view of how things actually panned out, & the fact the game was scheduled for a bank holiday weekend, also that Dean Court was a relatively small ground, what in relation to ticket allocation, and if you also add in alcohol, there was surely always going to be the potential for problems. And sadly it proved that way, & with English clubs about to re-enter Europe, it couldn't really have happened at a worse time. Though thankfully, our English representatives were still able to participate in European competition, in the following 1990-91 campaign.

      When I say heavy handed policing I mean what was going on around the town, for example I was talking to a group of Leeds fans on the seafront promenade who were playing football and a police van came at them head on and believe me there were many incidents like that. Riot police were throwing their weight around before there was any trouble and to Yorkshire people back then after the miners strike it must have been like red rag to a bull.

      I have little doubt there was provocation to a degree on both sides, but when 5000 fans travel to the south coast in Summer, without tickets for match, they are not going there for the sun bathing mate. The idiot minority had one thing in mind, and they did it, to the detriment of all the Leeds fans, and the people of Bournemouth.

    Saddoes, they are just pathetic. Interesting that the Police guy said that they understand that there are junior groups and then two levels above that, that they are going to stamp out but millions of years later Bradford City still have the 'Ointment' and under them the kids who are known as the 'Under 5's' so I don't think whatever the Police did has worked unless they were just looking at Leeds.
    Leeds has never been a club that anyone cares about other than a few in the Town and most see their fans as losers. I expect it is a blessing in disguise that when they have at last got to the Premier League the fans can't watch them. Pay back I guess because it's something they are going to miss out on and it is likely they will then be relegated back into abscurity.

      The police don’t want it to stop, it keeps them in a job, and a cushy job at that.
