Love my 017 keeper, and this black version is the new one I will go with. Seiko is really killing it bringing back their past icons in such well done style with the likes of the 55th anniversary, this new alpinist and now the Navi timer.
That is one sharp looking watch! I’m not usually into most seiko models but this one has my attention. Your review was excellent as usual and the outdoors scenery was a perfect way to enhance the overall aesthetic of this being a tool watch. Well done!🥃
i was not really excited about this release, as i'm not the biggest alpinist fan, but boy oh boy, was i wrong. Night and day difference between this and the clasical spb121 for example. They made modifications in all the right places: dial and dial text, 3,6,9 indicies, bezel, no cyclops, new date window, etc... And it makes it so much more modern and cool. I traded my beloved seiko navigator reissue for this, it will be missed, but the alpi gmt makes that wound a lot easier to manage. GREAT PRODUCTION QUALITY as always my friend...
I work in the geological survey of Canada as a hydrologist. Have a sarb017. Large date is very useful for field notes for log days. The small date is useless. Don’t like watches with useless stuff in the wild.
Seiko needs a true GMT caliber to compete with Miyota. Then these will really be on another level. Great video. Also, I don't think a GMT with a rotating bezel can measure three timezones, certainly not at the same time. A GMT hand is actually "supposed" to be set to GMT time, hence the name. So the hand is at GMT-0. Then you use the bezel to set it to the time zone you want to track. Most people just leave the bezel where it is and set the GMT hand to their second time zone, and use the bezel as if it's fixed. So to track a third timezone, what you would have to do is figure out the difference between your second timezone, and the third, and then move the bezel accordingly and that would get kind of complicated. So a rotating GMT bezel really just let's you choose to measure a second time zone in two different ways. But you definitely can't track three timezones at once, that's for sure.
Nothing wrong with it, just depends on if you're a "caller" or "traveler." I love the quickset hour feature, personally. Very convenient.@@BraveBeaters
The 6R64 IS A TRUE GMT CALIBER . IN THE ALPINIST THEY USED 6R54. AND THE SHARP EDGE SERIES IN THE SAME PRICE RANGE ONLY 200$ DIFFERENCE. THEY NEED A SMALLER TRUE GMT CALIBER ,MUST BE THE REASON FOR NOT USING THE 6R64? OR IS IT A COST SHORTCUT?
You know what watch design you want for your adventures during summer, but it's hard to find the same for the winter season because very few has been able to nail the design down that gives you winter vibes. But Alpinist is like Black Bay Pro, Explorer 2, Sinn 856 utc, Damasko DK collection, Ball Outlier etc has really nailed down the winter vibes that makes them the one and only watch you need for the winter season. It's a rare thing these days to find watches that has a clear identity in what they are.
Great video, and one that helped me decide on my first "serious" watch. I ended up getting the green JDM version (SBEJ005). Worn it every day for the past 3 weeks, keeping great time so far, and it's so nice to look at.
A fabulous looking watch and great review. The Seiko of 2023 is now the business that most interestingly takes great historical designs from the company’s glory days, and transforms them into improved latter-day versions (a sapphire crystal!!!) and then applies the cripple hammer of disappointment letting us down with irritating sub-par execution; the unnecessary 13.6mm thickness (there’s really no need), to the poorly finished hands (QC issues have become the corporate trademark), the -15/+25 seconds per day stated accuracy (yes, sure it’s usually far better, but REALLY?), all for an eye-watering $1,150 + tax. I’m sad that the Seiko that brought out such brilliant designs in the first place now looks so cynically half-hearted.
Feels somehow more busy than the classic Alpinist sarb017. I do think that this one is definitely an upgrade, but the SARB017 is still my favourite. Thanks for the video.
Awesome review! I have non GMT SPB210 gold on green watch with brown calf leather and milked gold plated deployant clasp. It is a fantastic watch and tuned to COSC standard
I think they shpuld use the 6r64 on the Alpinist and the 6r54 on the Sharp Edge, considering Alpinists ideally are for travelers /adventurers and easier to adjust the local times, jumping time zones. Regardless, beautiful watch and thoroughly enjoyable review.
I've come to appreciate your content so much - there aren't many videos I look forward to more than yours. Your outdoor shots are fantastic - do you have any other non-watch channels out of curiosity?
Thank you very much! Kind words :) This is my only channel, I am trying to build more context around the watches and the experience to wear them, that's why I invest in this area a bit more, than other reviewers.
Really dumb question... Can someone explain how the compass works? Does it floating around like a normal compass or di you have to manually make it point north(which seems kind of useless)?
Great review Andrei. I’m really tempted to add this to my collection. I agreed that White dial somehow didn’t look right to me. Black dial is stunning🎉
It's a lovely watch, Alpinist was all about the color scheme - that amazing original green. No serious eve hiker will take this pure baby to the elements.
Your photos and shots are always great. This time I have to say I liked your photos better than the watch itself. Except for a few models (the Alpinist GMT is not one of them), Seiko always has the same variations of their watches. I have gone from being a big Seiko fan to an occasional Seiko fan. This model is also to blame - sorry
I think they should have used lumed numerical and baton indices, but it was a tradeoff for the classiness of the look during the day. Seiko is a dial design company before anything else.
I started lose my love for Seiko, since quality is not increasing with prices. This applies mainly to their movements and their QC. I'd love to add some Presages to my collection, but experience I had with Seiko movment regulation was awful. 6R54 in the aplinist is pretty much affected by the same flaws. Good luck with holding time after ~3-4y. They're impossible to regulate. I think more community pressure would be much desired.
A great watch to take on a vacation - take it to the pool, beach, restaurant, museum, city trips.. know the time back home and have enough power reserve and accuracy that you set it once for a 1-2 week vacation and forget about it.
I can't ever remember being on a hike and wondering, "What time is it is Lithuania?" Seiko Alpinist is an awesome, beautiful watch. The GMT is just a cash grab for collectors.
@@BraveBeaters thank you for sharing it! I must say the production quality of your videos is top notch! The music, photography and narration are absolutely beautiful! Good luck!!!
La mulți ani! Sa ai inspirație in tot ce faci! Currently enjoying my SPB197 Mountain Glacier. This GMT version looks lovely, but I keep wondering if perhaps a 12 / 24 hour inner bezel wouldn't have been more relevant on this variant. Awesome review as always!
Great looking watch the only thing that keeps me from the alps is the hand style and lume. Besides that I mean it would be my perfect watch. That pop of red on the dial looks amazing though.
Another great review! Thank you mate. You are the best. I must admit that you must be living in a great place, having this kind of a landscape around you.
I disagree. The current compass chapter ring which from an owners perspective is more than useless could have held the 24hr markers. The chapter ring could have been stepped and the crown screw down to lock the GMT markers. This would leave the polished watch bezel as originally designed, clean. It looks to me a compromise compared to my lovely original Alpinst.
Well said! Not only do I think it’s a messy design, why would you need a GMT on a hiking/mountaineering watch? Who’s walking between time zones? They should’ve improved the compass which was often misaligned and wiggly. We also have the technology to make it a pusher compass. Push and hold to automatically point north and release to lock it. And for over $1000?! Seiko dropped the ball. I already think the $700 alpinists are overpriced, but I really liked the original design. Small monochromatic date window is the only improvement I see.
It works great for me. A military pilot who appreciates field watches for obvious reasons and gmt or Zulu time with a fixed bezel because Zulu time does not change. (Pilots rely on Zulu time daily) Robust, understated and a useful tool for me. Great job Seiko.
Thought you used stock footage, quelle surprise when I saw you Andrei. Rugged footage for a rugged watch. The alpinist is just a timeless looking watch even with a gmt function, it makes it look even more toolish.

Haha! Exactly, logical and relevant upgrade to the classy Alpi!

Seiko does have a true gmt, it is on the presage sharp edge gmt.
You can use it for 3 timezones, I personally would have no use for that ans also find it confusing to work out the 3rd, but it can be done.
