My first dog would get his legs wet and would watch other dogs retrieving in a pond. It was obvious he wanted to. One day, he was walking in the water and stepped into a deep spot. He taught himself the rest. I now have two 10-month-old pups. My pitty followed his doggy friends into the same pond and copied them. My big pup just gets his legs wet. Older dogs are the best teachers. Monkey see, monkey do.
I’m a new owner of pocket American bully and would love to see more videos on them esp as they become more popular! He will be going to training as a service dog for my multiple sclerosis and our family guard dog! Wish y’all were closer to us!

My husky just jumped into the water behind one of his dog friends one day last summer & swam like he had done it his whole life 😂 my older, heavier dog used to love water but hated swimming. Not sure how the new puppy will do but definitely will take your tips into the first session in the summer!

I rescued an abandoned and abused shepherd about a month ago. She is about 8 months old now. She has fallen into our pool twice now and does not want anything to do with it. We want to teach her how to safely get to the steps if she falls in again. The first time she fell in, she was hanging on for her life on the edge and I saved her. I slowly guided her to the step but not sure she paid attention. She had panic written all over her face and was grateful I saved her. The second time was after it rained, she fell in again right in front of me. I guided her to the other step on the other side of the pool. Same thing, a panic look and was grateful. I bought a kiddie pool hoping she would get into it and she has no interest. Its just a huge water bowl for her. Lol. So now when we let her out, we have to stay outside just in case she falls in. The first exposure to a pool is so very important. Be careful with your dogs if you have a pool no matter their age. They get a bad taste and want nothing to do with the pool if it is not a good experience for them.
Thank you Garret for this informative video. It has helped me to teach my terrified 8 month old Dobermann bitch how to swim and learn how to get out of the pool. I had to use my Son's pool, which does not have dog friendly steps like your pool steps. Living in SWF will allow me to continue her pool lessons. My puppy plays with the garden hose etc he’s not water scared but went to the beach just yesterday and the waves were too much for him to get wet, so I think I will go to my daughters house and teach him pool first like you showed here, thank you
I work with dogs and many enjoy swimming, some don't, and some splash around in their own face like they've been electrocuted! But my previous dog, who was only 16kg, and not heavy for his breed (he was a mix) Literally went into the water, it got deep and he couldn't touch the bottom and I was waiting for him to start to try to paddle...nope. It was the only time I've seen a dog literally sink. There was zero attempts from him to even doggy paddle, he sunk! Thankfully my brother was with me and he held onto a tree and lowered be down enough to grab hold of his harness, which was a little lightweight one with visibility strips on. So definitely didn't weigh him down. Couldn't believe he just sunk!
My husband just said: Gee, I wish Diesel enjoyed water. Our GSD mix just just hopped into the water and SANK for a second like a stone and then swam and waggled towards us like he is having the time of his life 😂😂😂 so that's one thing that was easy for us

My dog loves dunking her head in the water, stepping in with her front feet. I try to convince her to get those back feet in too but she isn't getting it. I tried to help her one time but she was terrified and panicked. I don't know how to get those back feet in voluntarily. I think if she could get all four feet into the spa she could be coaxed into swimming. Hopefully to transfer to pool but our first step is very small and narrow, so we are practicing in the spa.

Hello I have a 1.5 year old chow chow and I’m just curious how to help him out with water he has a big fear of water, he does a great job when it comes to baths but overall hates water what can I do do get my pup into it so he can have fun with my boys when then decide to play with what we or in kitty pools?
I got a huge problem with my familys dog, my parents wont allow any kind of prong collar or nothing like that but still complains when he drags like crazy. We have a neck collar atleast, but whats the best thing i can do to keep him walking nicely without any extra tools?
Hi I have a beagle x staffie, he was a stray we think he was abused in that time. We have had him for ten years now and he is extremely high strung, we think that because of his past he is a lot more prone to picking up on stress and other emotions and cannot regulate himself. He tries very hard but simply cannot get himself to calm down. It doesn’t help that we have another dog that specifically likes winding him up. Any advice on getting him to stay calm and self regulate
Please do a video on how to keep your dogs out of the pool after they fall in love with the water. I watched this video when my Golden Retriever was 8 weeks and it helped me teach it to swim. Now all he wants to do is swim and I have a hard time keeping him out of the pool when off leash.

If you know he isn’t a good swimmer to begin with why don’t you help him learn with a life jacket first? He is obviously not a good swimmer, he was panic swimming each time.

I use life jackets so they cant reallY panic swim. They feel supported and start to natural swim
But what happens when you don’t have that life jacket?? You cannot rely on those when training them. It could just cause more stress.
