Re-energising a Generator with an Angle Grinder.

  • So my generator had packed up. Engines fine but no output. Got a new AVR as that was obviously blown but that did not fix the generator. All the continuity tests and outputs seemed to be as should be. Just no proper output. I had read somewhere you could re-energise a generator with a drill. Something about the residual magnetism being lost. The output generated by spinning the power tool being enough to create the initial field in order fire the power output up again. So I thought I would give it a go. Angle grinder seemed easier as I could spin it along the ground. Worked a treat.
    Just be careful if you try it as the moment the generator starts output, the power tool will be powered.

    The angle grinder method worked like a charm! I've used a drill and turned it backwards before and it worked but not this time so I tried the grinder. Thanks!

    This is astounding ! I'm thinking it's the best way to get it to work. It doesn't get any simpler than that. Thanks for the insight.

    Amazing trick worked 100% for me. I had no grinder so I used drill machine.

    Only works if it's a shunted type generator. On other models you have to remove the AVR. ( Or you'll damage the AVR) If it's an inverter type generator then that method doesn't work. Older generators ones more lucky with. Provided that the Stator is in good order. If the grinder works, however the voltage or output drops off after 10 seconds or the grinder or drill just dies under load, then circuits in the AVR are bad or your stator has a short in it. Certain stators aren't that easy fixable anymore. By the way. Trick does not work with brushless motor drills or grinders.

    Great job! Unfortunately, i gave away my corded drill about a year ago thinking i no longer needed it ( id only kept it around for flashing the field of my generator). Then recently needed my gen and lo and behold the damn thing wont put out any power. Ive been doing a mental inventory of all the corded items in my home trying to figure out a solution. I narrowed it down to the grinder and my sewing machine, but have been hesitant to try either of them. How would i do it with the sewing machine anyway? Stand out there with the foot pedal and everything? So glad you posted this video!😅

    That's a slick trick. I've always thought you "flash" the exciter field by putting 12VDC across the brushes. Lucky break for me I happen to have a Ridgid generator that's currently taking a dirt nap only putting out 60VAC. I think my AVR is toast and field is Ok. So, I don't think your trick will work it's magic in my current case. Tell you what though, I'll definitely give this a go when I have a generator putting out zero voltage. It's just too slick a trick not to try. Thanks for sharing your approach!

    Your video (and others like it) should be a lesson to everyone. Before turning a screw, try flashing the field with a corded tool. Saves money by not shotgunning parts replacement if that's the problem. I presume the tool has to be a brush type motor. I wonder if backfeeding a 6vdc or 12vdc battery through the AC outlet would accomplish the same thing without blowing the AVR. Connect the negative to the AC neutral, positive to the AC hot for a very brief (

    my generator has been sitting for awhile it produces 110 fine but when switched to 220 nothing any ideas?

    • @CuriousAdventures
      @CuriousAdventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two sets of winding's that normally join together to make 220. Two lots of 110. You should be able to see which is which and check the output. If the two readings are different then there is your fault.
      Maybe you can get a rewind? The problem could also be in the regulator, but the output should point you in the right direction.

      @petersack5074 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CuriousAdventures Right, Mostly 2 black wires = one 110 volt winding. Usually 2 white wires = 110 volts, = = joined in series, get 220 volts out.

    That didnt work for mine. Are they Avons on the SV.

    • @CuriousAdventures
      @CuriousAdventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changed the regulator first and went through all the wiring. Have you checked all that? If the engine is running then there is not a lot else to go wrong. Possibly a brake in a winding somewhere?

      I have run Avons but not recently. I currently use Conti Motions on the ZRX as well as Jaynes SV. They are good all road tyres. To be honest, most radials are far better than the cross ply's I used to run on for many years.

    • @CuriousAdventures
      @CuriousAdventures  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the AVR is designed to act as a fuse so you might find it needed changing anyway?
      When I made this video I had already changed it as the old one had blown.

      Or lock the trigger and try it both ways till it works, like I did in the clip! :-)

      Bit late now! I was a little worried about the angle grinder starting up and cutting a finger off or something, didn't even know if the trick was going to work. Thought I would set the camera up just in case, so nothing was planned.
