  • I needed some plates for my home gym but was not going to pay $2 per pound. So I decided to buy the Caveman Molds off eBay and made my own.

    Great advice for the paint! I didn't even know there was paint specifically for concrete, I'm definitely gonna buy some soon. To reinforce my 25 & 45 lbs weights, I put 4 thick steel nails inside the weights in a "tic-tac-toe" shape around the PVC piece.

    More or less all good but that PVC internal sleeve is coming right out since it has no nails, screws, wire or any other sort of retaining system and it was in the mould when the release agent was added meaning it got a light coating of oil over it further decreasing the chance it will stay in place. I've made a few and I used a thicker ABS pipe with screws in the side (I dremeled out any points that went through so they don't scratch the bar)

    • @DanZalinsky
      @DanZalinsky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I know what you mean with the pvc sleeve. If I got any oil on it I would wipe it right off. Good ideal with the screws though. I havent had an issue with the sleeves on my weights but anything to improve them is good. How many plates have you made?

    • @mrgordons5130
      @mrgordons5130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DanZalinsky I made a few kettlebells and gada Mace's (those swing around a lot so they have to be secure) I've got two 24kg plates curing and I used the same abs sleave on those. I went with thicker plates rather than the large diameter thinner ones. I think the solid block will be a bit more secure on the bar since I didn't use a mesh support. If I made some wider ones I'd think about adding a mesh netting as well.

    I need 300kg for powerlifting so if i buy 300kg it's gonna cost me a lot of money. so i decided to make my own plates... is it okay if i make 50kg plates? I mean one plate will be 50kg

    • @DanZalinsky
      @DanZalinsky  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a heavy plate. I dont know of plates that go about 45kgs. I dont know how easy it would be to find a mold that could support 50kg, and it would have to be an enormous mold too. Plus I think it would be easier getting to an exact weight by using a smaller mold.(20kg)

    You might want to not coat it until it's fully cured, after minimum 7 days.

      Some I painted after 24 hours and some a week later. Ive haven't seen any paint chip or peel from either of them yet. But ill keep you updated.

      @DanZalinsky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KaijuB9k Yeah after a few more molds in colder temps its better to wait about a week to use it. The plastic insert can still move around slightly which might throw off the plate itself.

    So these are not quite DIY plate. You need the die. The plastic die used to pour the concrete in are outragedly expensive Unless one wants to make many plates it is not worth.
    For the price of the die you can buy a plate.
