Unrelated, but in ark today I had a "only on ark" moment. I lost a high level spino in a fight 3 days ago. I set it to aggressive and it chased away an attacker into the wild blue yonder. I tried to find it, but gave it up for lost after hours searching. Anyways, 3 days go by and suddenly I start getting kill notices on some bobs. On the opposite side of the island. Turns out this absolute unit rampages its way across the entire map before totally wiping some thatch beach boxes and the terrified newbies cowering within. I showed up, whistled him off, and gave them the contents of his inventory for accidentally helping me find him. He had a lot of metal tools and resources when he ran off so it made thier day (after very definitively ruining it) and mine cuz I hadn't expected to ever see him again.
I had an "only on ark" moment about a week ago. I was taming a therizinosaur from a cliff when it was at the bottom, so I spent about 50 tranq arrows on this level 135 beauty, and when he fell, he clipped completely into the cliff and was gone.
I made my own modification of the classic argy trap, all you need to do is replace the back gate (not gate frame) and replace it with 3-4 double door frames on a fence foundation inside the final gate frame, and it's small enough that griffins and argies can't fly through, but snow owls, pteranodons, and pelegornis can. So all you do when trapping the animal have the first gate open, then fly through on your owl/pt/pelegornis and dismount and close the gate, trapping the griffin/argy.
Thank you for posting! I can't wait to try these out. I've always been a shoot-and-run tamer and let me tell you, the success rate sucks. Its time for me to... evolve 😉
Hey great tutorial ! I mainly use the gate and pitfall traps myself. The only problem I've had is by the time I build the trap the dinos have all left the area so word of advise "have all your trap materials on hand before you begin to build". Here is another tip concerning traps utilizing gates. After you build the trap don't install the gate but put some pillars in the center of the end gate frame. Now put the gate on your hot bar. When you agro your target into the trap run past the pillars and turn, select the gate and snap it in behind the creature. This way you don't have to worry about the animal following you out of the trap when you try to run around to shut the door. When building a gate frame trap I like to use 6 or 8 frames with the pillars between the center gates. I have successfully trapped multiple Dinos at the same time using the hot bar method on several occasions.
For basically all medium sized dinos I use a 2x2 stone foundation with stone door frames 2 high, stone stairs leading up one side and I add an extra 2 door frames to the side opposite from the stairs to prevent it from overshooting the pit. This trap has worked all the time for things like Theris, Megatheriums, Baryonyxs, Carnos, Allos, etc. Really cheap to make as well. Additionally, you can tame Rexs with a 16 pillar trap, though it’s hard to describe you can find videos of it here on yt.
Im 100% an Ark noob, I have less than 100hrs played and just started 3 weeks ago, your videos have been the only ones that have made a lick of sense lol Thanks man!
I like to mesh together some of your designs. Put a ramp on one side, put a behemoth gate on the other and you can easily lead any dino in but also get them out through the gate afterwards. It's a bit more expensive up front, but absolutely reusable apart from the ramps that will have to be replaced every now and then. An added benefit is that they can't fly over the ramp because they'll bump into the massively high door.
There are only 2 traps I use, just a simple 2x2 with doorframes either 1 tall or 2 tall with ramps, or the argy trap you showed. The argy trap works for pretty much anything up to as big as a yutyrannus. Both of the traps are relatively cheap and don’t weight much, so they’re perfect for carrying around
I like the ol "4 gates in a U shape, a bear trap lure the dino with a flier then while its stuck on the bear trap BAM place a dinosaur gateway behind it"
Man I am 100% new to ark and I have been doing nothing but watching your how to vids and I tell ya what I am teaching my experienced friends things. Thank you man a serious help.
with the raft trap, you can lower foundations to make it near flush with raft, and its easy to snap a dino gate using a fence foundation to make it more reusable
The raft design is pretty good because you can move the dino back to your base, but captain fatdog has made much cheaper and more efficient traps for the argy and griffin
Thank you so much! I am a long-time Ark player but took a break for a year b/c of corona and forgot pretty much every beginner thing ever! So this helps alot
By the way, I never said thank you for being so very wholesome and helpful and supportive. It's not really something youd expect from what you hear about this game. You're the best
You forgot about the giga trap, I used 4 metal dino gates and about 10 giant bear traps and I would lure the giga into the trap afterwards. It'd take me several times and several sets of armor for when it went around the trap or when the bear trap broke before I placed the gate down.
@@xstorm_8_shadowx the bear traps would sometimes run out before I placed the gate because I ran to far away as a precaution in case the giga went around the trap like it sometimes does, or it'd bite the gates and knock me back when I'd try to place the 4th gate
The argy and Griffin trap I like to use most of the time is one Dino gate, four stone foundations, four stone ceilings, twelve stone double door frames, and of course the stone gateway. The double doors are wide enough for a pteradon to fly through, but small enough not to let an argy or Griffin through, so kite the flyer of your choice into the trap through the Dino gate, fly through the back of the cage on your pteradon, land and dismount and quickly run around the cage to close the Dino gate.
Very good tips for beginners. The 4th, cheap trap, was pretty much my goto for all dino taming. They just fall down inside the trap and cant get out, I always found the need to close gates to be not always 100% working. Plus, argy trap works with all fliers including wyvern. One thing I would have liked to see are advanced traps for creatures like Karkinos, reapers and Gate spaming for Magna's. Oh, and, you make me want to play on the center again.
Ah, I still remember when I started to play ark, I used to watch all these videos in the internet of how to build a trap for whichever dino I was about to tame. Nowadays I just use the 4 gateway 2 gate trap for anything that can fit inside, even griffins. It's super easy to use with tapejaras because you can fly in the trap, let the griffin (or any flyier really) follow you in, then just pull back with reverse, fly to the other side of the trap, land and run and close the gate. If it's something big I'm taming, I just make U shape out of 3 stone gateways (metal if it's giga), leave a large bear trap in the middle to make it look like a mousetrap. It holds even a giga in place just long enough so you can run behind it and set 4th metal gateway there, and you got yourself a helpless dino. Special mention should go to baryonyx, as I usually just bola them and then build a cage around it during the 30 second timer. 4 foundations and 8 doorframes. This always causes the barys eyes to turn cold and lifeless, like a dead fish, all the while the poor dinos soul is leaving it's body and slipping into oblivion, as it realises what is happening.
I usually use the argi traps on griffins too, works very well. You can capture owls there too but you need some ceilings on top because they somehow fit through the top
Hey you are the best, I now have a really good understanding of the game, but it would be nice if you would do a video about mutatiations . 👍KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK👍
With the argentavis trap, put down 3 - 4 fence foundations snapped to each other in a strait line, then snap one side of the dino gates to the foundations. The spacing allows a pteranodon to pass through the gaps, but not an argentavis. You can build door ways 3 high on one side of the back end of the trap as they are cheaper then the 2nd dino gate.
I have a yuty trap that always works for me. Put 4 stone dinosaur gateways in a square with enough space to walk through. Lead the yuty through and close the gate. It also helps if one of the gates is s+ so it closes automatically.
I never thought of building little buildings to tame dinos! I just thought you had to be super fast or something. No wonder I was having 0 luck and kept getting straight up murdered lol. Thanks for the guides man.
Dude thanks so much for the well explained and well thought out guides. They are so great because they make sure to explain everything well but they are also succinct. Not 17 minutes talking about useless information lol.
Tip for the cheap carnivore trap You could put a behemoth gate on the opposite side of where the ramps are. You can't fly off and you can walk the dinos out once tamed. You still don't need to open it to get the dino in if you have ramps.
The first trap: you can do those without a door on the other side. drop a couple of pillars just outside the doorways on one side of the trap, and place ramps. wooden ones are fine. aggro the dino from the top of the ramp and when it comes for you, walk backwards off it. the dino chases you up the ramp, you back out of the door, and the dino falls into the pen. it does mean replacing two of the walls each time, but if you're on public server, you don't want to be leaving your taming pens up anyway... Edit: I usually make the smaller pens with fence foundations instead of full sized ones.
I just started replaying Ark couple days ago. I love raft base, so I made one with dino pen(2x3). Then a Spino spawned near my raft. Then some how it climbed on my raft then got itself trap partially in the raft's dino pen. I hit it with some tranqs, when it got out of pen, it ran for couple of steps before got knocked out. Now I have a Spino to protect my other dinos lol.
If you use ceiling on the wall you can walk Rex's right out cheaper than breaking the wall and rebuilding it. 2-3 should do. Basically make stairs. Remember to remove them for the next tame. Can be built on the fly most locations.
Awesome! can you make a video on building tricks? like I was yesterday-years-old when I found out I could make a bridge with pillars that dont need to reach all the way to the ceilings, but just along the ground beneath said ceilings, also could you do a breakdown on the weight distribution on platform saddles? I had an anky and a dodec, farming metal, but it seems that their weight reduction is less than normal while on the platform (their total weight in their inventory screen is not reflect what my quetz is carrying). Just some ideas, keep up the great work!
@@coryOO7halo2 Anky has a 75% weight reduction on metal, the quetz could be calculating the full weight without that reduction. Except I've carried them with argentavis before and this wasn't happening, was he in the platform saddle or being carried underneath?

You know, when you are tired of your job, go for radio speaker or dubbing, you got the voice for it... 😍 As for content, you are among the best, too, IMO. 1) info : noise ratio is superb 2) solid info as stepping stone for southern beach folks. Keep up the good work! Love your vids... That said, I cover my rudder with a hatch frame, and even trap door at times as long as it is wooden raft. And ramps for critters are out of stone with me... maybe I am the only one that manages to get them stuck on the ramp, clobbering away at it.... 😅 My trapper raft is by far my most used trap, so it is worth the investment, IMO. Therefore, it has the basic crafting stations, and a bed, too.
For the first trap, I usually have the Dino gate frame already placed down and the Dino gate in my quick bar . That way as soon as the Dino runs in, I place the gate down quickly and don’t have to worry about the Dino escaping as the door’s closing
Hay man im sorry I haven’t been able to catch the streams i have been real busy with school and other activities. Just keep up the amazing work you are doing amazing and are the best streamer and content creator for ark hands down keep up the grind!😃
The Ramp Traps are the best and you dont have to destroy the doorframes as you said you can just cryopod the Dino after taming. This is by far the Best way. Its an total waste of resources to build traps with Behemoth Gates.
I am a pro at this game I know just about everything about this awesome game but I just still like to look at survival hand books they make me feel new
For all of your traps, regarding larger creatures, the solution to having to break it down,to let them out,is admittedly expensive, yet eloquently simple. Simply use a large Dino gate and door. That way,no need to break anything down, only to rebuild it later. Another adaptation I use is to have a regular sized door in all traps leading down a tunnel to a centralized hub. The hub is just big enough, for a motar and pestle,a cooking station,a storage box,a bed, and myself. Lastly The "Hub", is connected to all of my traps, including my modified passive tame trap. It works for me and ensures that I can easily access, and allow my tames out.
I really don’t know how I got here, lol. But, I’m sure glad I did. I just finished a second video and sub’d. Excellent content, great delivery! I have to go back and start from the first video and catch up. This should be fun!
hey Pterafier! i absolutely love your vids and this is by far the best one, but, im about to start a brand new pvp server on Crystal Isles, sooo maybe you could do a video covering crystal isles pvp eventually?idk up to you obviously, Love your content, keep up the great work!
Will there be a guide how to make the most efficient/cheap custom recipes? I think i will use traps more often, i hate it when a thery runs away but then randomly attacks. Whats also good for middle sized creatures are large signs to surround them, for rexes/gigas etc the metal dino gates with a bear trap. You could also do another trap video in the future, maybe for specific dinos like managarmr or wyverns. Again, great video as always, continue! (I changed my name from P.P. to Pepone)
I use 4 metal dino gateways/gates (if needed) for literally everything on this game. It's the universal pen. Trap anything from a raptor up to a giga with it.
You can tame almost anything with wooden billboards and a bear trap. 3 billboards shaped as a U and bear trap in the middle, lead it into the bear trap and once caught put the billboard behind to trap
I would suggest if you want to tame a trike or creatures like a trike I would at least lvl up your speed to 130% or more and get a crossbow and get at least 70 tranq arrows and just shoot your trike and run back a bit and reload and shoot and repeat and when you knock it out id use mejoberrys to tame because at is easy to collect and quick to get and it’s a good herbivore taming food hope this is helpful and have a good day❤️
great video like usual, could u do an advanced tips video? Like idk, processes an advanced player should use (pve or solo) for taming, hunting, finding dinos, advanced bases, etc.
For the argy instead of closing the gate just put the doors on ur horbar and place it itll close the gap a lot faster so nothing will get out while ur gate is closing
Tbh, you don't need traps too big, i always use the 2x2 foundations + 2 floors of door gateways + 4 stairs. Just hit the dino for the agro, run to your trap, get over the stairs then jump over the trap (always on the middle), the dino is going to follow you falling inside the trap then is fully traped, it works for almost with any dino. (except gigas, brontos, titanos and flyers), you can use it for gigas, but build all of it with metal, or try to build it and a partner can hit and agro the giga, so it wont hit your building.
A better trap for flying tames is the same as your first trap with a roof you use a pteranadon and have whatever chasing you come directly head on them you fly behind the trap and land, the wild Dino will come at you as if there's no trap between you, it's less risky if your not a good flyer
Ramp traps are also good atleast for me because other players can use your trap it might be a pain I guess but someone built an extremely convenient ramp trap which I actually used to tame my 130 female megatherium.
Very cheap, but somewhat dangerous giga trap, 4 metal dinosaur gateways and a large animal trap, place 3 gateways down like your making a square with the bear trap in the middle and place the last metal gateway behind the giga after you lead it in
There is an easier trap for griffins 2X2 stone foundations 2 high stone doorframes on all sides but one 2X2 stone ceilings Stone dino gateframe with gate on the side without doorframes Demolish one of the stone doorframes on the bottom Aggro the griffin with pteradon the flie through the demolished doorframe jump off and close the gate
I like to craft multiple bolas. Raptors usually travel in pairs. Bola both of em and tranq em before they get out. But it is risky 😬 I'm just lazy to gather the stone to make a trap lol
Unrelated, but in ark today I had a "only on ark" moment. I lost a high level spino in a fight 3 days ago. I set it to aggressive and it chased away an attacker into the wild blue yonder. He goes on a different server
Oh my gosh thank you! All of these traps were so helpful!
Happy to help!
Here's a burger 🍔
Thanks to both of you
When you already tame a griffin with a different trap: 👁👄👁
This was my first hearted comment 😊
I tamed a griffin with the argy trap 😆
For the argy trap I only use 3 gates and works perfectly fine as well as with gryffins, wyverns, and managarmr
Talking about cheap trap, I remember AdmiralBulldog videos
Thanks for the kind words!
For the first trap, I usually have the Dino gate frame already placed down and the Dino gate in my quick bar . That way as soon as the Dino runs in, I place the gate down quickly and don’t have to worry about the Dino escaping as the door’s closing
Genius
Hay man im sorry I haven’t been able to catch the streams i have been real busy with school and other activities. Just keep up the amazing work you are doing amazing and are the best streamer and content creator for ark hands down keep up the grind!😃
No worries max! You got a whole life lol thanks for the support
The Ramp Traps are the best and you dont have to destroy the doorframes as you said you can just cryopod the Dino after taming. This is by far the Best way. Its an total waste of resources to build traps with Behemoth Gates.
6:30 off topic THAT SARCO IS GORGEOUS
Glad you're enjoying! Welcome to the community :)
4:18 you can have this trap only be a 3by3 and it still works fine, you just need to be a bit more precise
You can also put door frames on the other opposite end of the ramp to stop the Dino's from going over
You can also do a quetzal trap on the back of another quetzal by making a small box on the platform saddle
You can make a working argentavis trap with only two dino gates and gate frames, you just need good placement, but its not hard.
hey Pterafier! i absolutely love your vids and this is by far the best one, but, im about to start a brand new pvp server on Crystal Isles, sooo maybe you could do a video covering crystal isles pvp eventually?idk up to you obviously, Love your content, keep up the great work!
(I changed my name from P.P. to Pepone)
There will be! Lots of good ideas here, thank you!
TH-cam egagment.
Also, I agree. I'd love to see a video by you on custom recipes. I just hit level 100 and am finally ready to make the best ones.
Thanks so much this’s so helpful...💜🙏🏼
❤
These handbooks are amazing maybe you should make a book about it
Not a bad idea
Handbook book for book overlook
My brain is GAINING SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE. seriously this series is great
3:10 for spinos you should go 4 high cause spinos can climb 3 or less
I use 4 metal dino gateways/gates (if needed) for literally everything on this game. It's the universal pen. Trap anything from a raptor up to a giga with it.
You can tame almost anything with wooden billboards and a bear trap. 3 billboards shaped as a U and bear trap in the middle, lead it into the bear trap and once caught put the billboard behind to trap
Best series ever
Too kind 😲
Thanks, this helped me a lot with taming
Happy to help!
I can't think of anymore original replies I'm pterafied.
I got 2 griffins and an argy from that trap, thanks ptera
Happy to help:)
I would suggest if you want to tame a trike or creatures like a trike I would at least lvl up your speed to 130% or more and get a crossbow and get at least 70 tranq arrows and just shoot your trike and run back a bit and reload and shoot and repeat and when you knock it out id use mejoberrys to tame because at is easy to collect and quick to get and it’s a good herbivore taming food hope this is helpful and have a good day❤️
On the traps with a dino gate, set gate to open outwards not in to the trap. Way easier to shut from the outside and your less likely to get hit.
great video like usual, could u do an advanced tips video? Like idk, processes an advanced player should use (pve or solo) for taming, hunting, finding dinos, advanced bases, etc.
For the trap at 4:50, you can get them out without destroying it. You just need to place ramps to the top. (It worked for me)
thank you for the vid, I just started playing and your vid really helped me
I really needed the Rex trap thanks so much dude
Happy to help!

Everyone should subscribe to you for Great content
Three by three one high walls higher if you want. get a flyer pick up the dino and drop it in the pen
Liam Thomas unless you’re taming a rex
Some ppl play pve and you cant pick up wild tames on pve....
Hey love ur vids last time i chenked u had 1 k subscribers wow ur growing fast!
For the Griffin you can also use double door frames instead of pillars if you want to je can’t fly trough that but a pte can
A better trap for flying tames is the same as your first trap with a roof you use a pteranadon and have whatever chasing you come directly head on them you fly behind the trap and land, the wild Dino will come at you as if there's no trap between you, it's less risky if your not a good flyer
For the carnivore trap you can just make it with a behemoth gateway and gate it’s easier and less cheaper if your doing it your way multiple times
I use the argy trap for griffins too. I mean, it's hard to get them in, but it's easier to make.
Same traps I use, except I rarely use gates. I always do the ramp version. With Cryopods, you don’t need to demo anything afterwards.
LMAO i always forget about cryopods 🤦
Ramp trap works universally. Only hate if they dinos are moving around too much or if it is too wooden and forested.
Ramp traps are also good atleast for me because other players can use your trap it might be a pain I guess but someone built an extremely convenient ramp trap which I actually used to tame my 130 female megatherium.
Very cheap, but somewhat dangerous giga trap, 4 metal dinosaur gateways and a large animal trap, place 3 gateways down like your making a square with the bear trap in the middle and place the last metal gateway behind the giga after you lead it in
There is an easier trap for griffins
2X2 stone foundations
2 high stone doorframes on all sides but one
2X2 stone ceilings
Stone dino gateframe with gate on the side without doorframes
Demolish one of the stone doorframes on the bottom
Aggro the griffin with pteradon the flie through the demolished doorframe jump off and close the gate
That sarco was badass
Thank u for the tips really use ful
I like to craft multiple bolas. Raptors usually travel in pairs. Bola both of em and tranq em before they get out. But it is risky 😬 I'm just lazy to gather the stone to make a trap lol
I tend to use that argy trap for Griffins. Its makes it 100% easier
If you put a gate opposite the ramps it's helps stop Dino's flying over
Dude this really helped me out to tame some swamp creatures i was scared at first
Solid my dude
For the those simple traps you don’t have break anything just make use of a handy dandy cryopod
A chain of large bear traps has always worked for me.
you can use cryo podes to get dinos out of the Cheap Carnivore Trap
