I did my first ever cave accidentally as I was exploring the southern area of the island. But after I got the artifact at the end I felt very clever.

Dude. You forgot the #1 tip. With the introduction of cryopods, you can bring tames into all the caves now. The Theri and Thyla are most useful, but the boss of the caves has to be the Megatherium, with its bug buff. You don’t need any ammo or weapons, just a few good tames.

Unless you dont want to play the game with all that high tek stuff, which imo makes the game far more fun.
Most fun ive had in the game was playing to the point of not having electricity or anything technologically past the simple shotgun or pistol (no longneck either), harder tames (not longer times) and no flyers. Its a wholly different game and gives it way more of the survival feel.

Beelzebufo is surprisingly useful in the Island swamp cave as you can shred the swarms of Meganeura.
I use a high stat Baryonyx with asc saddle. Doesn't have any problems in most caves on the island (apart artifact of the strong).

In my 5k hours ive been in all the caves , if u want tricks I can help ya. For the Island caves (mainly them for Broodmother) I recommend going with a lot of hooks and a yellow shotgun. You can take a baryonix too to help

How to cave like a pro:
- Tame high level baryonyx, sabertooth, ravager, or thyla
- Kill anything that gets in your way
But if you're gonna do this on foot, this is a good guide.
There's really only two things I'd add:
1) Bring lesser antidote. Bats and megalania have the ability to infect you with mega rabies, which drains your health and stamina. Once infected, you either cure it with an antidote or you WILL die.
2) If you can, get your hands on a nice set of hide armor. While it won't give you as much protection as higher tier armors (chitin, flak, riot, tek), you CAN repair it in your personal inventory (bring hide and fiber, too), which you cannot do with the higher tier armors.
pro tip to make this entire video useless: carry 50+ sleeping bags and run really fast.
I had to read a long way before I got to the number 1 thing. All of those items he was talking about would be gone for ever with out a sleeping bag.

Arthroplura are actually really amazing for base raiding. They can eat metal bases with the acid blood spit so just get a flyer that can grab them or one that has a platform saddle and fly around looking for bases. Whistle them to eat a door and watch them work if you don't have c4. Really good for early/mid game looting.
Guillie can be combined with bug repellant and cactus broth for the bypass method of caving as well!

the otter pretty much negates extreme temperature effects as well. making it a perfect shoulder pet for the lava and ice caves. i pretty much always have my otter with me as i play solo. i used it to carry an extra artifact but i didn't know it could carry multiple. thanks for the tip if it hasn't been patched out yet
It won't be patched out, it's a the only creature that can carry an Artifact, otters were created for that with that ability.

arthro's are easy af to tame, pick them up with argy/wyvern drop into water and feed them. They won't aggro u underwater. They break any structures and are so worth it for pvp. As for AR's while they're fun af and surprisingly effective with shadow steaks, they're not smart to use as ARB goes in turrets and your ammo is so much better used for turrets than an AR.

Handy enough... I always bring my otter with me for the insulation. LOL... And it also carries my dino gates I use to trap creatures that I tame.

On mobile, yes, you can't use otters for ultimate artifact storage, but you can tribute them at obelisks for some really special rewards... an even better way of getting loot than loot crates!

Of all the tips, the only one I haven't broken completely was the knowledge I'd a tame, that can carry multiple artifacts, AND insulates you while riding on your shoulder.
I liked the otter for its special insulation and cuteness, now love it for it's Artifact Buff-ness. Just remember to bring fish for your fuzzy wet boyo.
Haha that bug repellent will def help with lava golem cave f the bats, good looks🙌
For other Ark mobile players you should tame an arthro or a Areneo, cause there's a glitch where every creature is passive to you when your riding them and would make caving a lot easier.
Also the Megalosaurus in mobile is another dino that when you ride it every dino is passive to you unless if you encounter a Rex or a Giga.

I honestly completely forgot about bug repellant. I hate those centipede things so much. This will definitely be handy as I usually just want to get in then back out

My favorite cave strategy is bringing a small army of beefed up dimorphodons with me. They're like my ark guardian angels.

Plus combat bows with metal arrows may be one of the best things I've ever used in a cave personally, two taps most things.
Why you are so underrated
Can't take multiple dinos with you and have each of them carry an artifact? Also thank you for the tips, I was too scared to enter a cave, but now I'll give a try after I get all the preparations for it.
Otter was the best tip for me.
Just sucks I've only ran into 2. One I accidentally killed while on a spino and the other slipped away into the the swamp. Have not seen another since and I have searched and searched 😓

Thanks for the tips. I actually use melee weapons in caves. A sword and shield works great for me. I do have diseases turned off though so the bats infecting me is not an issue. I also bring a shotgun but I don't find it effective on bats.
I'm not sure if it's my timing but I find the shield to be of little use when fighting scorpions.
I just used bug repellent today for the first time. It's very handy when you want to run through a cave to get an artefact. You should warn everyone that as soon as you use the 3 or so artefacts at the obelisk that you need to be ready to go fight. I didn't know that. I thought you made a portal at the obelisk that you can open anywhere and any time you wanted. That's why I'm running back through the caves. I didn't realize that an artefact can only be used once.
I took with me 9 good stats Raptors and came out with 3. I don’t feel ready for caves lmao

This video has good advices for going solo on foot, but honestly most caves can be done riding a creature, especially now that you can have cryopods early on the hame and this way you don't need like half the things this video mentions bc you won't be the one taking hits and such, the creatures I suggest are Baryonyx, Thylacoleo, Megatherium and I really like Yuttyrannus for caves like the Snow cave from the Island that is full of Purlovias lol but for that you'll definetely need crypod
This way you pretry much don't have to worry about what gear/weapons you bring except for the cave of the Skylord and the cave of the Immune full of toxic gas from the Island, I would still take antidotes, health brews and grappling hooks just in case and why not any sort of fire arm, chances are you might have a decent one already that you take everywhere anyways
When mentioning the cave creatures, you forgot the Pulmonoscorpius, the Megalania, the Rubble Golem on Scorched Earth and the Deathworms on Ragnarok.
Mele with a pike (while mounted on a cave dino) can be quite good vs. Onyc which kinda force melee-distance interaction.
It depends on your mount, but bats like to fly around the player and are often 'above' the attack areas of many mounts. So if you can poke them with a pike, it can be quite helpful.
This doesn't work well with a basic pike and no melee stat. But with say a 200% pike, and 200% melee... bats die like crazy. Pikes give less potential DPS on a target dummy than a sword, but they have reach, and actually do a small AoE, so they're great vs. hard to hit targets like bats.
Rockets are best to initiate against bats (and most other cave habitants). A sniper rifle is 'good', but a rocket is 'really good'. Don't use rockets if you have a dingus in your party who can't sit still and will walk in front of someone pointing a rocket launcher. Or just leave the dingus back at base. Rockets should only be used against stationary targets to initiate a fight. Once aggro occurs, put it away!
Lesser Antidote: don't go caving without it. I've tried making this with Rhino horns... it's a miserable grind. Instead take a Theri into the swamp and hunt leeches. Leech blood is vastly easier to gather in bulk. 4 hours of rhino hunting made a few lesser antidotes for me. But 2 hours in the swamp got over 300 leech blood. Alternatively, the snow cave on Rag is a good source of horns.
Bug repellent is helpful, but unless you know a cave's layout pretty thoroughly, I would be cautious about leaving enemies alive, which you might accidentally aggro later as you move forward. Getting aggro from multiple groups of enemies at once is no bueno. Instead, I'd use bug repellent to help ensure you are able to initiate combat from range, without drawing aggro first. Rockets are only good against stationary targets at the start of a fight.
C-4... you can actually really F-up some bugs/bats/snakes with C-4 if you plan your attack well. Use repellent to place the C-4, then fall back & pull enemies into it. Also, in the 'hard' snow cave, you can do truly amazing things with C-4 and grappling hooks.
Custom recipes: mind-wipe to make 1000%+ crafting skill custom foods. The healing from custom foods is kinda slow, but it can offset any environmental temperature damage (apart from the "murder snow" on ragnarok). Also the slow heal of a custom recipe when combined with medical brews noticeably speeds up the health regen, so put them next to each other on the hot bar. Never mind-wipe for crafting skill if you're max level and your server doesn't allow infinite mind-wipes. These can also easily offset the penalties of popping lots of stimulant. Look up "custom consumable" on the ark wiki to find a helpful interactive box to plan good recipes (element dust, rare mushroom, crops, and cooked prime/mutton are the most attractive ingredients overall)
Grappling hooks: don't go caving without grappling hooks. They allow you to limit the types of creatures which can hit you, and they get you over sketchy leaps far safer. And if the ceiling is high enough, you can do terrible, terrible things to enemies with C-4.
Riot Shield: Not the most strictly necessary item for caving, but they can come in pretty handy in certain caves (vs. say ice worms or yeti). A mid to high quality riot shield is well worth the 15 weight in certain caves.
Extra armor/repairable armor: In easier caves, centipedes are the major threat due to their armor breaking spit. Having good hide armor BP's can work really well. Just bring some lightweight hide & fiber into the cave with you, and you can repair your armor on the fly. Also, consider a beaver (casteroides) as a cave mount, since it's a mobile smithy and you can repair your flak armor in it's inventory. It's also very compact, and an excellent swimmer. Plus it has very similar damage compared to a sabertooth, but better health. I'd rate it as equal to a wolf in combat with a primitive beaver saddle, and superior to a wolf if you have any saddle above primitive. Also the game tends to throw 'good' beaver saddles at you (not as much as paracer and gali saddles, but it's fairly common in the loot tables).
Mounts: best? depends on the cave! Sabertooths & wolves are classics, but I'd argue that a beaver bests them both in combat, swims better, and is a mobile smithy. A Bari is very good for a cave with a lot of water. Thyla's are very nice in caves with a lot of jumps. Megatherium are god-mode in the 'hard' swamp cave on the island. Mounts work best in caves with few jumps and few tight passages which would require cryo-ing your mount often. A troodon pack can be strong in some caves, if leading a group of dinos is feasible without them getting stuck every 5 seconds. And in every cave except the hard ice cave on the island and the ice worm cave on rag... a dimorphodon swarm (or vulture, etc) can be absolutely devastating (dimo's don't do well against enemies with very large AoE attacks with knock-back). With breeding, a lot of mount options are viable, but these are the stand-out tames I've seen more often.
Sleeping bags: Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but these can really help. Consider a box with some gear next to it as well.
I use a cryoed megatherium for the 2 easiest caves. For cave of the massive might use a deer. Got some pretty high level ones.
Arthropleura are a super easy tame with a Karkinos. Put the Karkinos on passive, pick up the arthro and go some place safe. Dismount the crab, put on Ghillie and eat bug repellent and cactus broth and go out of render. Come back to the crab, walk down it's claw and tame the arthro. This is also the way for Mantis, gorillas, light pets - most passive tames. Edit: Oh, and you can tame titan boa in a similar way, just throw an egg on the ground and hover the snake over it while it sits in the karkinos claw.
As far as caves go, when you can, wear good ghillie because most caves contain the resources to repair it on the fly.
Good Video, however would have added a few things. If you only want the Artifacts and Not the Challenge, u should bring a Thyla with a Cryod Baryonix for the Water-Paths as you can use your Firearms on the back of both mounts . (Except the cave of the Skylord on TI where it’s probably best to bring a Rex and an Allo.)On that note, in the Swamp Cave for example, you will Need an Oxygen-Tank with Ghillie-Armor. So if you want to do it without further Knowledge of the Cave cause you want the extra-Challenge definitely bring one. For Armor, surely on foot taking your best and spare is the way to go, but mounted I would take higher Tier leather Armor and Fiber as u get enough hide in the cave and therefore u can easily repair it on the go. Lastly about the Otter. The Otter is not only capable of Holding Artifacts, but also adds Insulation to yourself based on its MeleeDamage. If you don’t have any good armor to keep yourself warm and are freezing just pump up your otters MeleeDamage.
And well for Underwater-Caves actually just bring extra Oxygen-Tanks and a high Level Basilosaurus and u should be fine. I wouldn’t recommend trying them without a Mount and the Basilo is clearly the best one for it‘s immunity against Cnidaria, it’s large Health-Pool and decent MeleeDamage.
Orrrr just tame a Megatherium and use a cryopod to get it into some caves and collect all that sweet sweet Chitin all at the same time lol

also... cryopods, which allow very strong dinos that do not normally fit in caves naturally, to be transported inside caves beyond the narrow entry.
If you have access to Cryopod, use a Megatherium! They are great in caves and they look cool too.
i did the ice cave on the island today and just one polarbear already killed my dire bear mount. ended up with having to grapple through the cave and pump shooting the dinos while getting stunned by purlovias 3 times. gonna do it with a yuty and fear roaring next time.

Don't forget Arthros are useful to break enemy structures, especially early game in PVP to save on explosives!
Spiders are mountable, and arthopleuras are one of the few Dino’s to damage metal stuctures.
I use a 216 tamed thylacoleo with a mastercraft saddle good polymer armor and a light pet. In cold caves its riot armor with some fur pieces

I'd recommend against using boas for an egg farm. It's not that they're bad for it....it's that they fall through the map sometimes in my experience and it's just a pain to keep them because of it.
What Do you think is necessary for doing alpha?
1: Pump shotgun
2: Crossbows
3: Zip line anchors
4: Zip Line Motor on metal pants
5: Profit on your zippy boy.
Note: You forget to mention any of the many hazards in caves such as:
Radiation
Pit falls
Poison Gas
And the worst of them all...
Glitches.
