Just finished doodling this design in a large size like I would on a quilt. I am so happy! Will get one of my lap quilts done this weekend using this. Thanks again, in Lakewood, WA.
The 2nd one you showed is my fav design of all I have seen so far! I could do this one. Have heard that beginners like me often find it more natural and easier to do plumes on one side as opposed to the other, left or right. For me, it is easier to do plumes coming UP the spine instead of down the spine as those are misshapen for me. But this kind would be easier. Thank you for showing these both as drawing and then sewn. Awesome!

This looks hard...keeping it all the same size and your symmetry is perfect. How long did it take for you obtain such perfection? I am a perfectionist and this would drive me crazy if I couldn’t get this within a short time. What kind of foot is it you are using? What kind of machine do are you using?
Thank you! I was using polyester embroidery thread in that video. I only quilt with polyesters (filament polyesters, not spun polyesters) and rayons because they have a wonderful sheen that draws the viewer's eye. The background fabric on that quilt is a cotton sateen and it also has a slight luster to it. Using the two fibers together really shows off the quilting.
I quilt using threads that have a sheen to them, so filament polyesters and rayons. The kinds of threads that are used for machine embroidery are wonderful quilting threads.
Beautiful design. I am trying FMQ right now to get out of doing straight-line quilting, so I am at the early learning stage; in other words, my designs are a bit wonky. I really like your technique. I noticed how freely your quilt moves along the surface of your machine. Do you use a silicone cover or maybe one of those special clear tables? Thanks! I have a Babylock Soprano.
It's moving freely because I'm using a suspension system. (That's the purple arm you see me clamping the quilt to.) This holds part of the quilt in the air so the quilt is literally weightless and there is no pulling or dragging against me. Well, I am using an 18"x18" practice sandwich, so I wasn't having issues with weight. I was having problems with traction, getting the sandwich to slide effectively. I had purchased that silicon cover that's supposed to help fabric slip and slide easier, but it kept slipping off (LOL) or curling under my fabric. I can see in your link that you use the Sew Steady table. Your suspension system looks very interesting, too, and I can understand how effective it can be to reduce pull. Brilliant idea! :-D
Using a silicone spray (only made for fabric/sewing), like Sullivans, helps keep the extension table surface slippery. I noticed you keep the speed of the machine the same, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference when you slow down moving the material. I have never tried free motion, but I want to being an artist I love your geometric designs, I could go crazy!
I actually DON'T keep the speed of the machine the same as I'm working. It looks that way because we had to speed the video way up to keep the length shorter. I am slowing down every time I need to back track or do something that requires "finesse."

They're not all the same size, so no need to worry about that at all! I'm stitching on a Babylock Destiny and using the open toe free motion foot.

It is cotton sateen fabric that I dyed and it is VERY soft! It's a yummy fabric to quilt.
