  • A Joey Smallwood propaganda film made in the late 60's. An interesting look at St. John's and the province at that time. Scenes include the new Arts and Culture Centre and Avalon Mall as well as the building of Churchill Falls and the Long Harbour Phosphurus Plant.

Ah, yes. The Newfoundland Dream. To work hard just to give away the pay off. Got to love that island hospitality.

There isn't any mention of the CN railroad which would die about 15 years after this documentary. There isn't any mention of the water rights to the Upper Churchill being given to Quebec forever and untill the end of time . It's still a shame that the provinces resources are being sold off for next to nothing and that Ottawa screws us at every chance they can get .

I was gonna comment the same thing. Yes it’s a shame Ottawa has rights to the power plant this could be a lot more profitable for us if we had control over it . Probably a lot cheaper electricity bills too.

Joining confederation was a short sighted plan for Newfoundland. Independence must be secured to ensure a strong future

24:15 showing St.Patrick's Hall School having tryouts for the Track and Field school teams at Shamrock Field. Great memories of being part of our track team and we had really good teams. I was a member of two championship teams back then. Many school mates have now since passed on. God rest their souls. On this site now stands a Sobey's Supermarket. In the background to the left is Macpherson School and as the clip advances you see the back of Holy Heart of Mary High School and McAuley Hall.

It's shameful that we practically gave away the mighty Churchill to Quebec.

@@danncomminc I’m working on a docudrama/documentary about the 1961 Botwood Waterfront Fire event. I’m looking for as much footage as possible to make it as accurate as possible. I’ve already made a short one but it’s bad and I have much more needed information about it so I’m making it over again.

You can understand Smallwood's interest in Cuba and China--in the end Newfoundland wasn't so very different in its 1960s development. If Albania had been open for his inspection he probably would have had an interest in that as well.
