  • This video was taken from my brother's car while driving around Calgary. It lets you experience driving on a few of Calgary's main roads, about 50 years ago. I had just bought a new 1 to 10 zoom Super 8 movie camera, so was experimenting with it. The initial shots i took were jumpy, so for decades I have viewed this video as just garbage.
From 17 Avenue S.E., we drove south on Blackfoot Trail, west on Glenmore Trail (with a stop at a sailing club), and then north on Sarcee Trail.

Crazy how after nearly 50 years some things have changed dramatically, and others like Blackfoot Trail barely changed.

The wierd thing is seemingly Alberta especially Calgary does a really good job most of the time deleting old roads until theres no trace left except of whats still in use. Look around BC even the big cities and you can see the ruins of old roadbeds all over the place sticking off the side of modern highways.

1975 Having Flashbacks. Good ones. The next year I got my driver's license. My parents had a 1965 Mustang and a 1970 Mercury Cougar. All my friends drove muscle cars or various GMC sedans. We skied every weekend in the Mountains.
    Fond Memories. ✌️

Seeing what the "Yellow Pest" plates looked like on actual cars is cool. They actually really look good on the cars of the era.

Prior to the yellows, Alberta plates were blue with orange numbers..

Very cool. There's an inherent charm to old super 8 film that's very unique. This was about 15 years before I was born, and it's clear that Glenmore and Sarcee didn't change much between then and when I was a little kid.

That's all I took on that day. At the time I was disappointed in how it all turned out.
I do have a similar video called Edmonton 1969 (Super 8 Film), posted 3 years ago.

Reminds me of when Highway 1A west of town (towards Cochrane and Canmore) and east of town (towards Chestermere Lake) had that retro looking narrow, uneven and rough pavement (from what I have been told actually dates from 1946).

Was life better back then in Calgary? To me I wish it was like that now but maybe that’s just because I wasn’t around then.

In most ways life was “better”…… less political corruption, less dept and inflation, stronger purchasing power power, less toxin build up in the environment however during the 70’s 80’s and 90’s our government was hiring and funding universities and hospitals to work on MK Ultra in partnership with CIA which developed horrific methods of mind control which are widely utilized today

I still find it hard to believe (from someone who arrived in Calgary in 1991) Blackfoot Trail used to be Highway 2. By 1981, Deerfoot was still under construction from Blackfoot to Glenmore.

@@goldenhourkodak That's your opinion. My neighborhood is 35 to 40 years old. We have a lake, Fish Creek Park, all schools, LRT, shopping,.
Medical, dentist, optometrist all within walking distance . The best part it's not downtown. Three blocks away to freeway access and 35 min to Bragg Creek.
      You're a neighborhood snob.
