  • Beekeeping has a sharp learning curve and many new beekeepers cannot last through the first year or two. Discouragement and failure will take them out. They wind up wasting hundreds of dollars and countless hours because of these avoidable mistakes.

I first check outside of hive. I start on the ground. I look for dead bees and hive beetles in the ground. Hive beetles reproduce in the ground. Then look at stand make sure no chew marks or trails of pest. Then I look for claw marks or fur on hives in the nail boards. Then I knock 3 times before unscrewing cover. My hives face east for morning sun because woods to west. Once open I check langstroph honey frames to right of brood. The honey frames don't touch and if lots of bees they get misted with sugar water/thymol mix. Then move to Lazutin brood frames. Got magnifying glass to look for pest, fungus, deformities, and for egg laying. Making sure floor is dry and clean and floor entrances clear of obstructions. I end with checking the 2 Lazutin frames of resources left of brood. Then find queen or check for queen in a hand full of bees and do powdered sugar test. treat if needed. After I seal it back up. I then will cast brassica and thyme seeds this year around hive. Also brasica mix for deer too. I made a mistake and built a swarm trap out of rough cut oak. It weights as much as my 15 frame 2 by lazutin hives. Trying to catch another early swarm so built another swarm trap. Figure healthier colonies swarm first. Later swarms seem smaller. Lots of old growth around and remote so I let them swarm. I am interested to see how my 2 colony lazutin hive did this winter. Will check on the mustang hive soon only down state hive I have. The bees were removed from mustang trunk.

Hi David, from another David in New Zealand :D I'm super stoked to have found your channel...I really appreciated your clear and easy to understand explanations and the depth of knowledge that you are incredibly kind to share. I've recently (i.e. this year) returned to beekeping and am navigating a very steep learning curve...I previously kept bees for a number of years in Australia, and really had it easy...mild temperatures all year round, no nasty diseases/pests/mites, hundreds of acres of mixed bush that flowered in every part of the year...really easy. Returning to NZ, after 13 years I've decided to get back into it and am now faced with wintering down (and we're just entering winter now down here), limited foraging seasons, varroa, AFB etc...but having a wealth of knowledge available from my local bee club and experts such as yourself have made it so much easier than ever before. I think of this as a continual learning exercise and even with the massive amount of new knowledge and experience I need to build up, I'm thoroughly enjoying it all even more than before. So again, thank you, and I look forward to working my way through your back catalogue and keeping up with your posts.

My wives grandfather, raised in Arkansas, each summer, would go to a pond. He would wait, watching for bees. Follow the directions they came. Eventually he would find a hive each spring. He would harvest a colony each spring but he never wintered his bees. I guess he didn’t know about winter bee kind boards haha

I don’t understand what went wrong but I lost two hives over this winter so I guess I’m gonna start out from scratch again, I don’t know if it was from Mites or did I lose the queen because it didn’t look like there was much brewed in there Charlie , PA great lifestream tonight, David
