Our hive, which we just started this year, swarmed 3xs - each with a new queen, but the mother queen never left the hive. Instead, they replaced her after splitting into 4 hives.
What a crash course year we've had!

David when splitting a hive would you suggest introducing a new queen or letting them produce their own queen .thanks John

David, I ordered a knock-off Apymae because the price for 3 deeps was acceptable. I put a mated queen in two frames and the hive is growing and not affected by the recent cold weather. I bought this hive as a trial to avoid wrapping as it looks better than a poly hive.

Would it be advantageous to put a second entrance when using a Queen excluder, like drilling a 1/2 inch hole in the super, so the foragers don’t have to pass through the Queen excluder? I’ve seen it in another podcast. It sounds like it works. But they do close it off after they harvest the honey. That way they don’t have to worry about robbing.

I've got a queen like your black shiny one, that was very interesting, thank you.
She also is outstanding, i've had to work hard to keep her from leaving.

We just found 1 hive beetle in our healthiest hive yesterday. We found it after seeing larvae in the pollen patty. Curious how it gained access to our healthiest hive and missed the weaker hive?

I have a hive that has over-wintered and is already extremely populated (LOTS of bees covering the outside of the hive etc.
Worried about it being overcrowded already.
The frames are not all filled but I’m nervous they’re already looking to flee.
There’s a feeder on top currently as well.
Thoughts on whether they might already be looking to bail?

Ahh crud.. I laid a queen cell on it’s side to attach it to another frame in another hive 😩

What does it mean when your bees come out the entrance? Fall down to the ground when they come out and Walk away from the hive.

If your hive is brand new, foundations only , and you have a queen cell made with a small amount of drawing out of comb and a tiny white grub like is inside. And there is no actual queen .. is the swarm possible making a queen??

I have a frame with a long cell on it, but it's open on the end. Should I keep checking back to see if they close it? I couldn't see good enough to tell if there was a larva in it. I also didn't find the Queen but the hive has about doubled since my last inspection about two weeks ago.

Dave I started some new hives this year . One of my new hives have a couple of frames that are cross combed pretty good and have wonky comb that is full of larvae . Should I scrape it all off and let them start over or is there another option ?

I live in NW Mt, zone 5 and get about 4 ft of snow each winter with lowest temps around -15 (at worst) and normally right around the freezing mark most of the winter. My friend said I would have to move them in the winter? Help? I don’t have yet, but watched many of yours to now and see I could be feeding them…ideas welcome.I love bees…

Well, I recommend follow the lead of other beekeepers in your area who know it well and see what they do.

Our bees jeep making double-sided comb - no matter how we space the frames. How can we fix/precent this?
