  • Hope you're all ok. Earlier this year, I visited the wonderful Falls of Shin Salmon viewing platform, near Lairg in the Scottish Highlands, and also explored the local nature reserve which was just beautiful. The community visitor centre was closed at the time of my visit but has an excellent, restaurant, gift shop and exhibition. The Falls of Shin are just a fifteen-minute drive from Lairg up the Achany Glen and are a must-see in the area.
The Falls of Shin are one of the best places in the Scottish Highlands to see Atlantic Salmon leaping upstream to spawn. Sadly, I didn't see any on this occasion, but it is a wonderful thing to see when they're running. The best time to see Salmon tackling the falls is between May and September.
Aside from the amazing Salmon viewing platform, there are beautiful woodland trails (I took the yellow trail), a mini-golf course and a children's playground. The car park (free) is a good size, but it can get busy in peak season. After enjoying the woodland trail, I drove back along the River Shin to have a bite to eat at the Pier Cafe in Lairg, which is one of my favourite restaurants in the area. Really hope you enjoy the video :-)

Hope you're all OK and enjoy my visit to the majestic Falls of Shin earlier this year. I can thoroughly recommend visiting at any time of year, but your best chance to see Salmon leaping is between May and September. Have a lovely weekend and a huge thanks to everyone who's subscribed, it's hugely appreciated. If you have any questions about visiting please don't hesitate to ask :-)

Awww... thanks so much Mike, that's really lifted my spirits as I do worry about the quality and whether people enjoy my videos. I think I'm on a long journey to discover myself as a film-maker and I really hope that I can raise my game next year. Thanks for all your encouragement and support, it really fuels me to keep going. Hope you have a lovely week, all the best, David :-)

Great to see you doing more to camera David. You’re a natural! Loved the hoop throwing! That looked difficult! The falls were beautiful. Did you see any salmon jumping? Hope you had a good trip.

Hi Romana & Ewan, yes I managed to force myself in front of the camera and overcome my shyness for a change! I always want what I film, from the beauty of the trees, flowers and lochs, to the shadows on a hillside and a windswept sky to be the real star. I'm inconsequential when faced with all the beauty and wonder around me. Anyway - that's me rambling! It's something I'd really like to improve on next year by partnering with someone and really raising my game, as I'm really keen to improve the quality. Yes, the games around the trail were really good, but I was a bit rubbish lol! Sadly I didn't see any Salmon that time, but I have seen them in the past and it's amazing! Hope you guys are OK. Hope to see you soon and can't wait for your next video. All the best, David :-)

David, thanks for introducing me to the Falls of Shin. That's now on my wish list for future visits! I've not commented on the music in your videos recently - if ever. You do a great job of selecting and incorporating music. Sometimes it's easy to forget the great contribution that music makes to a video! Maybe I've just missed credits in your videos, but I'm interested in the source your music and the artists you feature. I think I do remember you mentioning one female artist - perhaps the one on this video? Lovely voice and recording!

Hi Leon, so glad you're enjoying the music. It's actually quite a challenge, as it's hard to find music I can afford to licence and you always worry that people won't like it, but I just do what I can. I'm a big fan of Jessie Villa who sings under the name 'Emorie' and I've been fortunate enough to feature her in quite a few of my videos. You should be able to find her on apple music or the other big music sites. TH-cam favours quantity over quality and I'm hoping that next year I can start producing films of more quality. Shooting 'one-takes' on the run is fine, but I'm starting to get a bit unfulfilled and feel myself craving to do much better work. I guess everybody feels this, but it'd be nice to start producing work I can really be proud of. Anyway, that's me blethering! Thanks for all your support Leon, it's hugely appreciated. All the best, David :-)

Thank you so much for this video. Lairg is one of my favourite places in the worls. Have you seen the tiny house on the lake?

Hi Ars, many thanks for taking the time to comment - it's much appreciated. I absolutely love the region and Lairg is often my base for exploring Sutherland & Caithness. So glad you like it too. There's something wonderful about the land in that region and I would describe it as a 'thin place' where the gap between the world of man and the spirits is super thin. Yes, the 'wee hoose' is so cute! Friends used to own 'Lochview B&B' and I had the pleasure of rowing around it for a closer look a few years ago. Thanks again for commenting and subscribing. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Hi Alan, please accept my apologies for the delay in replying. Yes, I think I may have been a little early to see any leaping, but I'll go back some day and hopefully film them in full action. I'm normally quite good at practical games - I think I might have got stage fright lol! Hope you're having a good week and thanks again for taking the time to comment :-) Ps I have a new wee video coming out soon in the next 24hrs which I hope you'll enjoy too :-)
