I personally have the subscription for combat patrol. The way I justify it is "I dont drink, I dont smoke and I have very few friends so theres way worse things I could spend my money on" Although it could be argued there's better things to spend it on too haha

Totally agree. I justified it the same way....don't drink, don't smoke and I really really enjoy painting and collecting (sometimes a game).

I have subscribed, I get enjoyment from the building and painting and lore side of the hobby and not so much the wargaming so these magazines are ideal for me. Even with the paint issues, which I already have all the paint I need, it still works out cheaper than buying from discount retailers, especially the premium subscription. I could even paint up and sell a few of the combat patrols, get the enjoyment of building and painting them and subsidize the cost of the sub.

Additional tip for the magnets: use a paint marker or two to mark the end of the magnet that goes in the model. Magnet on the N/S tool > paint on the magnet > magnet into the model. That way if you see the color on the magnet you know it's flipped on you. Sometimes they get squirrelly when close to other magnets.

    • @DaronSchmit
      @DaronSchmit 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Additional tip: grab a model with flat torso/shoulders joints and magnetize it. Then use that as your standard reference model for the rest!
I did this with my old Veteran Deathwatch Kill Team models and they still serve as my magnetization aids. You can put the magnet on the torso, drill the hole in the arm, then put a spot of super glue in the hole, then press the arm on and slide off the torso. Same general idea for torsos, but backwards

Standing desk: Ikea Trotten. I have one for my 3d printers. It's a manual hand-crank to adjust the height, rather than electronic, but that keeps the price down which you'll want as the BIIIG one (160cm x 80cm) is a spenny £200

As a wee lad my mum bought into a series of wildlife encyclopaedia. Every week for almost 2 years I would get really excited to collect my book from the local shoo and look at all the plates of hand drawn animals. I still use these as resources for my students (art teacher) they’ve paid for themselves many times over.
As far as the mode publications go: £40 per month is a big old chunk to slice out of your hobby budget for something you may or may not want.

They're an amazing deal if you DON'T subscribe and have a Forbidden Planet or other retailer getting the whole run in nearby. Then you can just cherry pick the good issues or the things you want, and you can also get multiples of those issues if you need them. Like with Stormbringer, I got over 2,000pts of Sylvaneth for under £100 - 3 Treelords (you only need 4 issues to make all 3 variants), Arch Revenant, Branchych (which was £6 on sale), and 20 Tree/Spite Revenants. I got a Drycha for £20 off Ebay and my brother in law got me Kurnoth Hunters for my birthday, so £130 if we include the cost of those.
For combat Patrol I'm mainly just looking forward to the Votann stuff and the GSC for Necromunda vehicles. Possibly the chaos stuff.

I'm subscribed and planning to go the distance or until. I play Kill Team but have no other 40k stuff so getting 9 Combat Patrols is great for me as a slow intro. My friends generally are not interested so its going to be solohammer of some kind so I can roll to see who is fighting from the pool of 9 that time. On the rare occasion someone wants to join in I will have a load of options for them. And more than that, even if I never end up playing it, I like making and painting them and picking up some lore. If I had been into 40k for years I probably wouldn't bother because I would already have a lot of other options and existing teams. But I have no existing units so cherry-picking issues for units I know nothing about makes no sense for me vs being sent a pre-picked squad that compliment each other.
It's 90 issues and I'm doing the premium £12 version for the extra models. £1080 over almost 2 years is not bad for a weekend hobby of someone that is lucky enough to have a decent entertainment budget left after other obligations. Don't care about savings vs retail as long as it isn't much worse than buying them outright and these seem about break-even for me. I currently have Army Painter/Vallejo paint so not bothered about those so much but I'll give the Citadel ones a chance when they turn up

I don’t think you mentioned the two Age of Sigmar magazine runs, the first of which (Mortal Realms) is what got me back into the hobby, and ultimately led to me taking on commissions. During lockdown, the sound of the latest issue coming through the letterbox was a little bit of much needed joy. Ultimately however like many people I ended up with an overwhelming amount of sprues, many of which I still haven’t painted some four years on. Picking and choosing issues you actually want is definitely the way to go, but the excitement of the shiny new issue is still hard to resist! Bizarre painting guides in these btw - the first step being to paint straight from the pot onto the plastic! Be interested to hear your thoughts on that 😅

I think the sanguinary guard should come with more blood angel specific extra bits (and the wings/single engine jump packs of course) I personally think that the old guard minis come with too many chalices and other bits molded onto the minis making them all look uniform in a way that didn’t make them feel special to me but if those bits were seperate and molded so I could add them as I wanted I think it would be great for someone who really likes those bits tot add if they want and would be a nice source of bits for characters and other veteran blood angels in the army. If I was say trying to help distinguish a cohesive blood angel army I would be much more inclined to get them if I new that the bits would help me with that and would give me stuff I couldn’t get out of say the upgrade kits

Decals is something I've always advocated for with regards to time efficiency. Inexperienced hobbyists will look at decals as a whole different hill to climb and ignore it because they have their hands already full trying to figure out paint. Take 1 evening and prime + varnish some plasticard sheets and extra shoulder pads. Practice slapping decals on it all then seal it back up. The learning curve to achieve reasonable results is quite low. There are many youtube tutorials going over the process.
I never minded those magazine minis. In another year those minis often pop up on secondary markets for dirt cheap and often still on the sprue.

I think a valid point to raise here is it’s not always just about building/painting or even gaming but also about collecting. Personally I’ve subscribed and I just sell ones I don’t want, I want most of the models in this to paint at a later date. I inventory everything I buy and usually only buy box sets or these magazines where there are savings vs RRP. Worth remembering that without collectors people like James wouldn’t be able to buy old kits down the line.

I've been hmm-ing and haa-ing about the combat patrol magazine, but it's UK exclusive rn anyway. I don't think I've ever seen the previous magazine runs in any stores here in Canada.
Irt magnetizing models, i don't see the point in magnetizing infantry models. Even with space marines the arms get too fiddly and loose. If you're playing a game and have to pick up and move units, more often than not your sergeant loses an arm and you spend 5 mins trying to find it on the floor somewhere. And most models nowadays are monoposed, so you can't easily swap weapons/loadouts at all without some kind of conversion being done.
(No I'm not salty about paint my client's magnetized models, shut up)

I got Imperium and I've built I'd say about 60% of it. All of the Marines are done and I'd say 90% of those are undercoated. Looking back on it, I'm not sure they're all units I would have opted for if I was buying things separately so while I saved on the actual models, I'm not sure it's the value I'd want from it. The new magazine is not for me. The idea makes a kind of sense but I don't want that many different armies and usually without committing to a subscription it is very, very hard and/or expensive to find individual issues if you're not in the UK.
In terms of older magazines, I remember Ancestral Trail which was a cool fantasy story/game that was a partwork in the 90s. The artwork definitely primed me for Warhammer, it’s very grimdark and ominous and later turned into a sci-fi thing (when I jumped ship on it). Then there was one where you built a glow in the dark tarantula, and another T-Rex. They still do these sort of things with Batmobiles and old ships like the Beagle.

It’s weird this time round being 9 combat patrols because it’s a bit like, who is this for? Like, if you are new to the hobby you would rather have a whole army or 2 than a bunch of starter sets and if you already have armies there is gonna be stuff in there you don’t need because you already have.
I’m saying this as someone that had subscribed though even though 3 of the armies I don’t really have interest in so hopefully can just sell on.
The problem with individual issues is some of them sell out super quick. Hachette did post on their Facebook about their being more demand and about some delays so it might be harder to get single issues this time

I don't have room for a full 40k board but the Combat Patrol one fits on my desk so yes I want 9 Combat Patrols rather than a whole army or two. Also as I am new I want to try different factions out.

That’s cool and I think most people are in a similar position with gaming space and full board doesn’t fit most peoples tables, at least not in the U.K. that said you don’t have to play on the recommended sizes.
One thing to know is that games workshop have been changing out the contents of the boxes they sell as combat patrols as they release new army books and these models are the old combat patrols. So with genestealer cults and orks so far you get completely different models to what you get in this subscription. This is good and bad for new collectors - it’s good because if you wanna expand that army there is another discount box available ready to go. It’s bad if you want to play the combat patrol game with other people at a game store maybe because the latest rules for the combat patrol for that army are different and use different models.
The chaos one has a bit of crossover as you get a squad of space marines in both and the space marine and tyranid ones the magazine has the latest combat patrol models in.
If you like all the different armies and models in the magazine though then it’s still a good offer and building them up each month can be a fun way to collect

I bought the first 2 part works, useless a rules set because both part works finished as the new edition was released for 9th and 10th, which doesn't bode well for me if 11th is released, no longevity.
Most models you might never want, the models flood ebay after, and some models are no longer mainstream 40k. i broke up most of the mags for their hobby content, some of the models are just added to my pile of shame.
The first part works was good value, the second less so, i imagine the 3rd might be even less
I also am not a fan of the combat patrol idea where you're getting a broad mix of factions, especially since its highly likely that the patrol wont be released consecutively for each patrol type, if the second release is anything to go by ok purely as a painter maybe , but if you game it's just more models you might never use.
The subscription is purely lazy/convenience and a safeguard against missing an essential numbered mag, its also guards against potential 2 and 3 parter models getting sold out.
The paint and brush ed mags are pretty sucky, and better to miss out, but then as a gamer you`ll miss a section of rules potentially you used to be able to order mags direct from Hachette, i don't know if that still is a thing as i'm missing out this round
Lastly do people actually really understand the full price of the entire collection if you collect potentially 100 mags
the first ever part works i did early 90s was a magazine only publication called warmachine, detailed breakdowns of all military equipment with really good schematics and photos, something i really enjoyed in my early teens, where the only ancillary sale was a specialist tarty file binder

I don't think the entire magazine is worth it (unless you're that rare person that wants literally all of it), as to individual models, it depends on how many sprues they are. Iirc they come one sprue per magazine? In that case anything with one sprue (e.g. the farseer) is always worth it, 2 (such as the wraithlord), probably yes - that's £20 as opposed to £40 rrp (or £32 with a 20% discount from your flgs, that some offer, such as Alchemists workshops), 3 is a bit dicier, the guardians are three sprues which comes to £30, £37 rrp, but with 20% off is £29.60, so cheaper to get from a discount retailer.
And those cancellation stories would make me more hesitant to subscribe!
And for a bit of a rebuttal on the Death Company, yes I agree not as much detail makes it easier for newcomers, you can always add more detail, but in that case what's stopping you from just getting the generic assault intercessors and an upgrade pack (or 3d printed bits) and adding them yourself (since that's what these new death company are)? IMO these faction specific units should be more detailed than the standard units, if they're too detailed for you, then like I said before, you can just kitbash/convert your own custom ones. And I think freehanding is a bit much for beginners, just painting more detail is easier for new painters learning brush control.

Combat patrol blows. The armies are ridiculously unbalanced and the units are equipped in the stupidest manner possible. All by design to drive further purchases.

I did the Conquest magazine, and i really enjoyed most of the experience. Sure, it could have been better, but i got loads of models (of which around half are still in their packages!) and I actually really liked the breakdown of the lore and mini stories contained in the magazines. I have squared many of the magazines away into the binders and ill probably keep them for the rest of my life! I also really enjoyed the opening packages experience that you mentioned 😂
However I did the single issue route with Imperium, and I will do same thing for Combat Patrol because I don't feel like I want 75% of whats in it.

I had the complete opposite luck in finding issue 1 of combat patrol. I got 2 on the first day and gave one to a friend. 4 days later I saw the shop still had loads so got 2 more. A whole week later the Tesco nearest me still had copies left. Clearly not a hobby area!

9 Combat Patrol boxes (estimating £80 per combat patrol) will cost you £720. The Magazine subscription (standard not premium) will cost you a total of £892.10 for all 90 issues. Granted you're getting the magazine too but is that really worth £122? You decide.
