Before buying the NAD M23 for $3749, be sure to investigate the Buckeye "Purifi 1ET7040SA Amplifier, Monoblock, V2", which are priced at $950 each ($1900 for two) and use the newer improved module.

Hey Steve, I heard you mention that you own many phono cartridges. I'd love to see a video where you briefly go though them and summarize their characteristics. I just recently purchased an Ortofon Cadenza Blue, which form me is about twice the price of most carts I've ever owned. I felt a bit assured of my purchase just knowing that you had one that appeared on your table in several photos, but I've never heard you talk about it. I like it very much, and very happy with my purchase!

    Hi Steve!
I do agree on those Kef's mentioned above.
I do have the Kef R11 Meta hooked up on a Rogue Audio Cronus magnum iii.
They really do sing. The soundstage that it gives is really big. The vocals are so good. I think it is a very good contender for Speaker of the Year.

As a $1500-$2000 alternative to the Kef R7 Meta, I tried Kef LS50 Meta speakers stacked on vintage tower speakers in good condition. Find the right towers for your room and taste and the result is stunning.

Sooooooo dam expensive. My ears couldn't tell the difference until I went from bookshelves to Wharfey 4.3, and that was pretty nice. The electronics don't seem to make that much of a difference to me (3 years on an aircraft carrier), so maybe I'm missing some of the delicious and luscious and wide space and vertical presentation and sweetness that audiofolks go on about.
When you start to work on driving speakers more than it takes to drive a car...well, I'm happy fer'ya!

    • @peterlarkin762
      @peterlarkin762 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The 4.3's are really good, I love mine. Huge amount of value for money. I highly recommend replacing the binding post links with speaker cable. Also, raising them up a a few inches is helpful I think. The depth and soundstage you mention has a lot to do with the source component (dac etc.). P.S. I used to spend huge amounts of time working on cars and, and now build DIY hifi as a hobby instead!

That System of the Day by Alan is a nice room. What nobody in America knows about Glasgow in the UK is that it's one of those those 20 minute places where we can get every brand in Audio within twenty minutes of every other Audio store. The UK city is like living on a postage stamp compared to the USA and the cars there all have very small motors. The USA is different.

Steve thanks, as always a good review!!. Just saying, I'm guessing that 50% ++ of your audience have budgets of $1K to $5K for equipment, with small (12'x12' +/- ish & medium-sized 15'x15 + ish) listening rooms where speakers & equipment "can't" be perfectly placed, and can't be played loud, only at low to moderate levels. With that in mind, it would be interesting to know what equipment would work best for this scenario ("for example" what's the benefit of spending $3K to $10+++++K on a Speaker, if ya can only place it 6 inches to 1' from the back wall etc.?

Hi Steve I love. Your reviews. Thanks so much. I am retired now. So have more time to play and listen to music. I was going to buy a turntable but decided to stay with CD,s because I have found great scouces for audiofile CD,s. So I have an entry level system .a Marantz cd5005 CD player, a Marantz pm6007 int amp. And Monitor bronze 2 bookshelf speakers. And every thing sounds good. But I'm thinking of getting the modi multibit 2 with the Vale + 2 headphone amp with tube for that warm sound.. does sound like a good combination for my entry level system? I would love to eventually get the Denafrips ares 2 dac but with my system do you think I will have to update my speakers ,amp etc for that dac.
Thanks for all the great reviews and advice Bo Davis

Hi BellaR648: May I suggest that you listen to the Kanto YU6 powered speakers plus Sub8 sub (I highly recommend the sub if you can swing it). This combo has served as my home office sound system for nearly three years, and I remain very pleased with its sound reproduction both for contemporary pop / rock / electronics / dance as well as a wide spectrum of classical music.
Inputs are very versatile, including optical (provided by my CalDigit TS3) and Bluetooth Aptx (both use the Kantos’ decent built-in DAC). There’s even a built-in phono pre if you have a turntable.
Perhaps you can score a good discount, now that we’re in the early hours of day 1 of Prime Days one and two….
I have older Sonos Play:1 speakers and IMO they sound dull and lifeless compared to the Kantos. (FWIW my reference system consists of an Audiobyte Hydra* stack -> ModWright LS100 pre -> FirstWatt J2 amp -> Zu Audio Druid V loudspeakers + REL G1 sub-bass.)

4:39 The medrange will not be subjected to the Dopler effect as much, to give you clearer and more concise medrange...unlike some of the older KEF floorstander speakers I saw on TH-cam. In a demo I saw the med driver pumping exactly the same excurtions as the two woofers in the box. What? All KEF had to do is put a 100 mf CAP on the med driver on the coaxial driver. At least with this new KEF model there is no treble and med wobbling out with the bass excursions (for that "still" sound). Nothing like it after dealing with single driver speakers for so long.

I don't really get the "warm and sweet" thing. Higher rez can be a little biting on compressed and bad recordings, but without the neutral detail you lose the "sweet" nuance in the more detailed and extended roll off. I'm basing this on my JC1 mono blocks system, so I might prefer a warmer amp if it isn't so smooth, but the "sweetness" is still lost in my opinion. You need the detail, extension and nuance to really hear the "sweetness". I just don't think "warm" and "sweet" are the same and go together. Unless you are referring to poor recordings that are inherently harsh, thus muffling it with "warmness" would be "sweeter". Neutral sweetness doesn't need to be warmed up and would only see "sweet" losses if attempted.

Maybe this idea to spend less on speakers comes from Tiefenbrun conviction. He said in interveiws: ....They said the turntable didn't matter; I said it was critical. They said the speaker was the most important thing; I said it was the last thing to worry about. .. This is not my conviction: souces are as equal importent like speakers, like everything.
