I am Japanese. When I was a student, I did not expect my parents to be there to cheer me on at a sports club tournament. I found out later that my parents were watching behind my back. It was a thoughtful gesture so as not to put pressure on me. There are many such families in Japan. Tsukishima's brother must be exactly that type. Sometimes there are families like the Wakunan family, but we always see them with a smile. However, when they win and go to the finals or national competitions, they form a cheering squad among parents. Japanese people like to be in a group, so they will actively participate in such activities.
when I first watched the episode I interpreted it more as shock that it was just the family there to cheer them on instead of having a school cheer team or classmates like other schools
Yes, from what others have said it’s very normal in Japan for family/parents not being at games. The games usually take place during the school day, and most parents are at work during that time. Obviously there are exceptions, but by and large this appears to be the case.
I remember an interview of Nishida Yuji's parents saying they've never been to a single high school match of his. Iirc they didn't want him to feel unnecessary pressure because of their presence. I guess it's just a difference in family culture.
RIP, Daichi. Excellent reaction as always. I love that you went from the observation "the camera is on Shimada a few seconds longer than usual" to the conclusion "Yamaguchi's incoming"! You'll see ... it's a good match!

I am Japanese. This tournament is held on weekdays. As a bad custom in Japan, working people (especially fathers) do not bother to absent from work to watch their kids unless it's a big tournament. Decades ago, fathers avoided taking time off from work for their families, but the way of thinking is changing recently.
Glad to hear things are changing! Also thanks for sharing! As a fan of anime, sometimes it feels like I'm more invested in Japanese culture than I am on my own. But I have so little insight into what it's actually like so I really appreciate when Japanese people share things from their perspective with us here in the West!
Karasuno v Wakunan is actually my favorite of the smaller matches in Haikyuu, because it shows how important Daichi`s leadership and consistency is to the team. Even though he doesn`t make flashy plays like everyone else, he is essential in terms of foundation and basic volleyball, which is why the other flashy players can shine to begin with.
All those trolls in the comments 🤣 👏 Honestly, I was waiting for this episode. Sarah is such a huge Daichi fan. I need the next episode now, I'm expecting tears.
Have you ever watched Mitsuru Adachi’s work such as Cross Game or Touch? I am so used to his story telling since I was junior high. However, my son was so surprised the first time he watched his works because one of main character always died in less than 5 episodes in the 1st season.
Ah yeah... This is the episode I'd been dreading ever since we found out how much you fell in love with Papa Daichi. I remember binging this whole season for the first time, and I'd NEVER clicked on a next video faster than when I saw my poor boi getting hurt here... * sobs *
I love how a reactor like Sarah was picking up all those little details about Daichi being so important in this match only to get him injured in the end. Just as Furudate had planed it. Also... SPOILER! SPOILER! The match against Wakunan is the most nerve-wracking in the whole Haikyuu (manga included), especially the 3rd set, two episodes from now. Like they could actually lose the thing. I made appreciate the fate of pro athletes and circumstances more. You can lose a match "on your way to the championship" just because of unexpected circumstances. I can't wait for Sarah to react to that because it takes years of my life watching it every time.
When I taught in Japan, it was pretty common for only a few parents to be there at most games, but for big tournaments, they were usually there. I've never quite understood why the series doesn't focus more on the families, but it is a little unusual for so few family members to be there.
I think I read somewhere that the mangaka is not confident in his/her family dynamics plotline that they decided to not include much. Also as the comment below said- too many characters would be fighting for screentime.
I had seen a lot of anime before watching Haikyuu, so as soon as I saw Daichi getting more focus, I knew he would be demoted from Dadchi to Deadchi soon haha
I am a Japanese and now living in the US. Also my job is heavily involved any kind of high school sports, including Volleyball. Most of Japanese high schools athletes, especially male, don’t like their parents coming to the game. Parents cheering up front and so loud like Takeru’s, they don’t like it. They appreciate their support in their minds but hoping not so recognizable. Sarah, they are just too shy.
Interesting. I played sports in high school (in America), and I agree that hearing your parents cheer for you is kind of embarrassing. But when everyone's parents are there (like they generally are in the US), they just blend into the crowd. If my parents were the only ones there and I could hear them, that would be way more pressure.
I'm honestly impressed by how you went "No Tanaka! Is Daichi hurt???" before they even showed it, I was too focused on the ball. Just like Tanaka. Also omg it JUST hit me (and I've watched this show how many times now???) that it was fucking foreshadowed with Tanaka going "your body just kind of moves on it's own, I relate" like damn! 😱
12:34 I think it's a haikyuu thing, there is a baseball anime called Big Windup (this is one of the best sports stories in my opinion and is written by a middle-aged sports psychologist and mother) and the family members of the players are pretty involved with taking care of the team during tournaments and training!
Yes, Big Wind Up is a good example for showing how much the difference in between high school athletes and parents. Parents must be involved for financial reasons, especially those who are playing power house. However athletes, especially male athletes often show how much they are embarrassed if family members showed up for the games and cheering up front in Japan.
@@かいえ18 Yes, I think a majority of children of this age group feel embarrassed when their parents cheer loudly, teenagers generally don't like to get attention unless it's "cool"
Japanese people are all about work and discipline. And they work a lot to say the least. Even elementary school kids go to school by themselves, even on the trains you can see little kids commuting to school and back home on their own. Parents also teach kids to be independent from a very young age, they teach them how to do house chores and run small errands starting from grade school. So it is very rare to see parents supporting their kids during such events. Unless it is an event that specifically involves parents as well.

The thing you say about teams doing weird stuff being difficult sounds very much like a boxing coach I used to listen to here on youtube (I can't remember his name though), apparently for his fighters that were competing he would grab absolute newbies off the street and have them spar but because the newbies didn't know anything and were always super awkward with what they thought was good boxing...they'd end up being the most troublesome because they'd do the most unpredictable things rather than just jabs, straights and the textbook stuff that his fighters were used to. Even though the boxers could handle them. it was good training for them to get used to uncomfortable and unpredictable situations.
it's becoming less and less normal for families to not attend games at school. Previously, because games happened during working hours fathers would be at work and mothers would likely be taking care of housework or your siblings, and they would only attend big games, or if their child is going to do the sport professionally. but work culture is changing slowly so fathers are able to actually get time off and mothers aren't expected to have a perfect home all the time. 5 years ago, it was considered maybe a little weird for me to attend my older daughter's soccer games, but now it's very normal for me to be at soccer, or my younger daughter's track events, some might even say double weird for me since I'm an only mother. I personally only have two children, and I would say that's very normal for Tokyo, but in Miyagi and other more suburban or rural sections of Japan it's a bit more normal to have a bigger family
It's so funny how biased she gets, like when she gets upset about the other team's member laughing at a Karasuno guy while not reacting to Tsukishima smirking at his opponent just a bit later. LOL Anyways, a great watch as usual. Leaving my support as usual. Though I usually leave my personal opinions about some of the iffy translations, there actually weren't ones that really bothered me in this ep, so it's going to be REALLY about preference this time 'round. 8:53 「次からはケツ叩いてくれる奴はいないんだからな?」➔ "There's no one to whip your butts into shape anymore!". This is just fine (nice & short, too), but a more literal translation would be something like "'You know that there won't be anyone to whip your butts into shape from the next (game)". I just feel their line doesn't convey the nuance that the coach is emphasizing that this was THE last game for the manager that's present in the original line. 20:47 「和久南は、日向に対してとりあえず一人、コミットでブロック飛ばすけど、深追いはしないってスタンスかなぁ?」➔ "one blocker on Hinata for sure, but won't pursue, apparently" This is OK, but it kinda makes it sound like they're not gonna "pursue" at all with this phrasing. 深追い can be literally translated to "deep pursuit", & is used in battles, for instance, where a leader would say "Chase the enemy, sure, but don't go after them too deep/far", so it's not saying "don't pursue at all". Something more literal would be like "I wonder if Wakunan's stance is 'to keep 1 blocker on H at all times but don't get too hung up on blocking him at all costs'?".
I seen this in boxing. Someone who boxes with skill and talent gets to sparwith a newbie. They skilled boxer get flustered because they can’t “read” or are given the exact “cues” they would with another skilled boxer. And the newbie just does weird unpredictable things
I enjoyed watching your game at worlds! You might not be satisfied with the result, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy beach volleyball!
At the end of season two are you planning on doing a video on your all star team selection like you did for season one, if so can you add who your bench players would be and coach too.
My stomach dropped pressing the link for this next episode even though I wasn't nervous when last episode ended and I was looking through comments It's like that inner anxiety when you have to present, but usually it doesn't stab or cause me to grin until exactly [24:28] 20:17 21:55 23:42 ... :) 24:27 I'M GONNA BE HECKIN SICK IS THIS CLASSICAL CONDITIONING SUGA'S EYES AND AH *cough* _Tanaka nice kill_ It really is classical conditioning because the exact moment it's the solo shot of the ball flying that way i'm like OH MAN Idk if I grinned this time because i was handwriting my comments for later as I hunched my shoulders
One of the things that surprised me in the US when i lived there (I'm european) is the quite non existent amount of independance kids have compared to where i'm from. Like legit everyone i know when i was young would go on their own to practice even if it was far away, whereas in the US the parents have to bring their kids to every practice and do everything for them. I guess since the US is so car centric its logical that no kid can actually go anywhere without their parents, but i do find that depressing. In japan almost all kids and teens have clubs and/or sports activities after school and they mostly do those totally independantely. They all go to school on their own, they practice and take care of the school's infrastructure by themselves too. So it's pretty understandable that parents aren't as involved as US parents are. Because in general, Adults aren't that involved compared to americans. And i'd say it's quite similar in certain parts of europe too
Well something to keep in mind is that not everything that is depicted in anime are representative of the actual situation in real world, but Asia families from like one or two generation before definitely have a lot of children about 7 or 8 was common back then, especially in my country people believed more child more prosperity. Nowadays families usually have 2 or 3 children. p.s. Daichi best captain
Lived in Japan for awhile. Unfortunately it is very normal for the parents to have crazy working hours. So if one or both have jobs, they cant really take time to see regular games. If theres one that doesnt, its more usual to go to the big events with other parents rather than on their own.

I love how Daichi looks like such a supportive dad when he talks about Hinatas "ne special move ;) "
RIP Daichi
Great reaction as always. I loved the PINEAPPLE HEAD little cream 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We'll miss you, daichi
RIP Daichi, the only time I cannot say
"Tanaka, Nice Kill!!"
it's becoming less and less normal for families to not attend games at school.
LOL
Anyways, a great watch as usual.
Hey, Sarah!!! So happy to see a new video! And loving the new thumbnail design. 😍
RIP Daichi
🤣 Sarah is always the best!!!!
I just watched a few minutes of this reaction - I think I'm going back and watching your whole reaction series !
RIP Daichi. He was such a great captain.
I've only tuned in for two seconds and I have to comment to say
YESSS YESSS YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I seen this in boxing. Someone who boxes with skill and talent gets to sparwith a newbie. They skilled boxer get flustered because they can’t “read” or are given the exact “cues” they would with another skilled boxer. And the newbie just does weird unpredictable things
Woooo let’s gooooo I love these reactions
I can’t believe you managed to not watch the next episode immediately after. I’ve never hit next episode so fast.
Your thumbnail u and Daichi looking at each other 😊
One of my most favorite episodes coming up
I keep checking back in to see if there is another upload knowing there isn’t lol. From this episode on is so crazy. Also, rip
Tanaka nice kill
RIP Daichi, he was the best, I'm going to miss him so much
been waiting all season for this one :) now Sarah has to bite her nails till next week :) muahh
Wakunan match is def the most underrated match in Haikyuu
This match up is like Deadpool vs Taskmaster. I hope somebody understands this lol.
Obligatory “nice kill Tanaka!” Because you know we all had to do it. Poor Daichi.
I enjoyed watching your game at worlds! You might not be satisfied with the result, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy beach volleyball!
Oh man I’m so far ahead I forgot Daichi was their captain before he died RIP to the man
At the end of season two are you planning on doing a video on your all star team selection like you did for season one, if so can you add who your bench players would be and coach too.
My stomach dropped pressing the link for this next episode even though I wasn't nervous when last episode ended and I was looking through comments
It's like that inner anxiety when you have to present, but usually it doesn't stab or cause me to grin until exactly [24:28]
20:17
21:55
23:42 ... :)
24:27 I'M GONNA BE HECKIN SICK IS THIS CLASSICAL CONDITIONING
SUGA'S EYES AND AH
*cough*
_Tanaka nice kill_
It really is classical conditioning because the exact moment it's the solo shot of the ball flying that way i'm like OH MAN
Idk if I grinned this time because i was handwriting my comments for later as I hunched my shoulders
And i'd say it's quite similar in certain parts of europe too
still can't believe daichi died
Rest In Peace Captain
RIP Daichi, we will always remember you
Well something to keep in mind is that not everything that is depicted in anime are representative of the actual situation in real world, but Asia families from like one or two generation before definitely have a lot of children about 7 or 8 was common back then, especially in my country people believed more child more prosperity. Nowadays families usually have 2 or 3 children.
p.s. Daichi best captain
RIP Daichi, you truly were the best captain 🙏🏾
RIP Daichi , you were a great captain and we will miss you.
yay new vid !
Fun fact: The die in Die-chi, actually means Death!
Lived in Japan for awhile. Unfortunately it is very normal for the parents to have crazy working hours. So if one or both have jobs, they cant really take time to see regular games. If theres one that doesnt, its more usual to go to the big events with other parents rather than on their own.
Nicee kill Tanaka!!
Fly high Daichi 🕊
RIP Deadchi, you will be missed. Tanaka Nice Kill!
That's Why I Try Not To Get Attach With Characters,One Episode And They Are Gone.
Gonna Miss The Captain
