Great video sam. An amazing piece of rolling stock. Really enjoyed the holiday on the model. Really interesting detail. Great to see the model running with the 08 shunter a great combination. Can not wait to see more videos like this.
Not a bad model to get things started with. I like the fact that you have split up the ranking system! Looking forward to seeing more O Gauge videos! Hope you’re well!

Certainly nice and detailed, right down to the nuts and bolts on the drop side mechanism. Think that coupling should of had a small split pin in it, that was a shame.

Sam: holds box upside down in main shoot. Sam: shoots new close ups of the wagon in box, the right way round. The yellow/grey livery was introduced in the mid 70s on engineering department wagons to replace the old olive green, and was adopted by BR engineering sector locos in the early 80s, dubbed Dutch livery because of its similarity to the Dutch "Nederlandse Spoorwegen" livery of the time. And the image you dropped in is actually a Salmon, used for track carrying (most engineering department wagons had fish names, hence Salmon, Turbot, Grampus, Seacow, Sealion, Whale, Shark (brake van), Clam, Rudd, Trout, Tope, etc), the bolster Es were shorter. The bolster Es were too short for their intended use (vs other designs such as the Salmons), so were rebuilt to carry spoil. A shame about the couplings, but most people who model in 0 gauge do some sort of kit building, so fitting new couplings is a minor issue (see hattons' latest update with their 0 gauge teaks...). The underframe on the 00 models are just as detailed, albeit plus NEM pockets for the couplings. A bit surprising that the lamp irons on the ends are moulded and not separately fitted, considering the rest of the model's specs. Too modern for me (in 0, anyway. I have the 00 version which is fantastic), but I will be investing in a Bolster E when they come out. Although, I do have a lot of preorders due this year (one of the imminent dapol TPE 68s, rails/heljan 18000, a rake of accurascale mk5as, accurascale deltics x2 (alycidon with sound, gordon highlander dcc ready), accurascale 92, kr models consett iron ore wagons x9), and I have been kit building a load of parkside 0 gauge wagons to pass some time too (averaging about 1 every 2 months). How about a dapol pannier to review? My next 0 gauge loco will be a 57xx/8750.
Sam have you seen dapol are bringing out a class 66 and at the moment rails are suggesting it will be around £280 sounds amazing for an o gauge loco of that size!!
Excellent video review of the Dapol Taubot wagon Sam 👍 It annoying that the spring from the coupling was broken of, but fortunately it not as bad anyway.
Hi; The doors look like they are held shut by the springs under the body....Also thought that I saw hinges. Obviously you've checked that.....(Ive been caught out before having delusions of operating springs....) Great review as always! Cheers
3.53 Clearly an Instanter coupling -- as it should be on a vacuum-braked wagon -- so you can up your game with your shunter's pole. Couple up with the middle link in the 'long' position, then twitch it to the 'short position with the pole for running. Very authentic. In theory at least, it should test the effectiveness of coupling and buffer springing too, especially on curves. However, that Instanter link itself looks suspiciously like plastic to me, so I have to wonder how well it would stand up in service. Excellent review, though, as always.
Nice review as per Sam, come on Dapol sort out the quality niggles! I thought for a second you were going to come a cropper with the shuttle system running, I couldn’t remember how much room you left at the end of the track (with the diode) to allow for a wagon behind the loco....
The packaging is obviously so that when the "window" is on the top ( and the wagon is therefore on its wheels) then the "DAPOL" is the right way up on both sides. The window is "above" the wagon so that's the orientation they have used.
Hi Sam. On the side of the Turbot is printed "This wagon must not be worked around curves of less than 3 meters radius". Given that the distance between the bogie centers on the real thing was 6.86 m it means that it should be able to turn on its own axis. Umm....
Very interesting. The trucks/bogies seem to be of a Bettendorf design (very common in the US), but the wheels have cutouts, which just isn't done over here. What era were these wagons used?
Thanks for sharing Andrew, that's an interesting point - these were introduced in the 70s I believe, though they're rebuilds from earlier designs! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Thanks a lot Ben - haha yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to get into the eaves :( I need the gap above the heater, so that the heat can escape! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i motion that now on every open vagon has to pass the bowman test, Sure it looks nice, but can it carry a Bowman or his O Gauge counterpart. It sounds more like a kit that they assembled rather than finished product, with the semi-finished coupling and inoperable door (given the state of that coupling i would not want to see what would door be like)
I don't know - it's fitting it - even with the pin, it'd be so difficult to get the coupling in because of the frames surrounding it. I even wonder whether they fit the coupling before/during assembly! of the underframe! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A great wagon with a superb amount of detail. Puzzling why after including all the detail beneath the wagon Dapol could not stretch to including a scale lamp bracket at both ends. Instead they chose to have moulded lamp brackets, got to ask WHY Dapol???
Nice review on the Turbot Wagon! Nice addition to your O Gauge rolling stock! It would’ve been nice if you have 2! But overall, it looks pretty good! I’ll give it a B-.
Hello Sam nice model i know what you mean with Dapol models id had to send a lot of dapol stuff back as bits missing and bad paintwork but it hasent stoped me from modeling o gauge its not just dapol as heljan and a few other manufactures i have bought some are just the same.

I was always amused at the name - what is it with naming rolling stock after fish? And very unglamorous fish, at that. Seriously, though, it's a very nice looking wagon.
Hi Brian, BR policy was pretty much standard in naming all engineering wagons after marine life. Made it easier for staff in the field to know what wagons were in a train consist. Hope that helps. Cheers Gaz
Dapol and crappy couplers, a love story in 3 gauges, available in N, OO and O... I know for the two first, if you want to change for better ones, it's a very powerfull incitative ! For O, I think you can have brass 3-links couplers for a reasonable price. I will try my new HO Roco couplers on Dapol wagons for the OO, you can guess why... That's a pity because the wagon is overall very good.
@@SamsTrains Don't say it too loud, but the unreliability of the couplers is one of the main reason why I left N gauge more than one year ago to go full OO ! I had bought then a rake of Mk III Dapol coaches in N and the train I made with them and a class 50 at the head was not able to do a simple round-run on a basic oval track without splitting itself in two or three parts ! This was the final nail in the coffin for my N gauge experience, and I sold off everything at Hatton's and bought OO instead (and italian HO recently too). Sincerely, if I would have to start from scratch now, maybe british O would have his chance.
I have to say that I prefer OO gauge in general as it takes a lot less space and price is more affordable. As such I don't have much interrest in O gauge. However, O gauge is a lot better for details then OO gauge.
When you showed the box at first I thought there was nothing in there

Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam can you get one of these in 00 gauge
Thanks James! Yeah totally - it'd be awesome to compare them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
18:18 look its Chonk!
haha yeah!! xD
A nice wagon, I have 4 in OO👍
Nice review Sam
Cheers John B😷
Oh nice John - how are the OO models?? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What if you reviewed some of Lionel’s O gauge stuff?
I would love to one day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great 0 gauge item. Still need to add some little bridges over the gaps between the shelves on your layout.
Thanks a lot Ben - haha yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to get into the eaves :(
I need the gap above the heater, so that the heat can escape!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review. Out off curiosity, what is the largest O gauge Locomotive you can run on your layout?
Thank you! Good question - I don't think I've found it yet... though the 08 or the 14xx is the largest I currently have!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Im super curious as to how well a Dapol Class 08 would work with the Lionel Legacy system. Also can Dapol O scale be fitted with knuckle couplers?
Is Lionel legacy a two rail twelve volt DC system with near RP25 wheel and track standards? That is what Dapol locomotives need to work.
Yeah that'd be my question too John - I thought all Lionel was 3 rail, but I could be wrong!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Well can Dapol O scale be fitted with knuckle couplers?
Do you use discord?
I don't unfortunately! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cool video Sam! Love the videos,
-Nick
Thanks very much Nick! :D
That looks nice Sam
Which loco do you pull it with I really would like a massive o gadge layout that would be nice
Thx Ben :)
Thanks a lot Ben - I've been using the 08 to pull mine! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Will you be reviewing the Bachmann 94xx?
I'm hoping to Harry, they sound good! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i motion that now on every open vagon has to pass the bowman test,
Sure it looks nice, but can it carry a Bowman or his O Gauge counterpart.
It sounds more like a kit that they assembled rather than finished product, with the semi-finished coupling and inoperable door (given the state of that coupling i would not want to see what would door be like)
haha I agree - sounds like the perfect test to me! Yep, this one was a bit of a kit! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes you should do an O Gauge loco maybe another diesel
I agree - that would be fun! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think you should build a huge O gauge layout for 100k subscribers. They’re too cool
haha that would be epic - I just don't have the room :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video
Thanks Red! :D
Can't dupol just have a link to the video and pop a coupling in post. Surely it won't be difficult for them to do?
I don't know - it's fitting it - even with the pin, it'd be so difficult to get the coupling in because of the frames surrounding it. I even wonder whether they fit the coupling before/during assembly! of the underframe!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
yes
Yes!
YeS
A great wagon with a superb amount of detail. Puzzling why after including all the detail beneath the wagon Dapol could not stretch to including a scale lamp bracket at both ends. Instead they chose to have moulded lamp brackets, got to ask WHY Dapol???
Nice review on the Turbot Wagon! Nice addition to your O Gauge rolling stock! It would’ve been nice if you have 2! But overall, it looks pretty good! I’ll give it a B-.
Thanks so much - maybe I will get more one day, could be cool to have a rake! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A very nice wagon Sam, apart from the couplings. Love the O gauge Bullman too!
Thanks Pete - haha yeah, he's right at home now! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hello Sam nice wagon could you review the bachmann Johnson 3f?
Hello! Yeah I have reviewed that - it was in the Midland Marvel train set review! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hang on when did I miss the class 08 review?
It was before Christmas! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hello Sam nice model i know what you mean with Dapol models id had to send a lot of dapol stuff back as bits missing and bad paintwork but it hasent stoped me from modeling o gauge its not just dapol as heljan and a few other manufactures i have bought some are just the same.
Thanks a lot Aaron, sorry to hear that - they're good when they get it right... they just seem to have quality issues! Heljan are even worse, you're right!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Your most welcome Sam stay safe and take care of yourself
Will expand your O gauge layout
I don't think so - there's nowhere else for it to go :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I’d like to see you review a larger O gauge locomotive if possible. A pacific would be good if it would go round your curve. Best wishes Adrian
I'd like to Adrian - I'll look out for one, got to be cost effective for me though, so don't hold your breath!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, Is this Nice or what, Goes nice with the 08 Fantastic, All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks a lot Brian - yeah it looks great with the 08 doesn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
😮what O gauge model will you do next too bad you probably can’t do Lionel
I'm hoping for a brakevan - Lionel would be good, but it's all 3 rail :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam how do you know what is the normal way around on the packaging?🤩👍Thanks for the great reviews that you have.
haha - because almost none of the thousands of other boxes I've seen are printed like that! xD
Appreciate it mate - glad you like them!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thoughts on Hornby dublo? Because I have it
And my grandad has a lot more than me he has about 30 locos and the layout takes half of his garage up
They're pretty fantastic - very high quality and virtually bullet-proof models!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains if you wanna see my models you should look at my tiktok account it’s called hornby dublo modeller but it’s entirely up to you you don’t have to
I was always amused at the name - what is it with naming rolling stock after fish? And very unglamorous fish, at that.
Seriously, though, it's a very nice looking wagon.
Hi Brian, BR policy was pretty much standard in naming all engineering wagons after marine life. Made it easier for staff in the field to know what wagons were in a train consist. Hope that helps. Cheers Gaz
haha yeah that's true actually - I never thought about that before!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@GaryNumeroUno - Thank you. It's always bugged me a bit.
That's a pity because the wagon is overall very good.
haha is that so?? I can vouch for O and OO, but N gauge too?! Yeah agreed, overall a decent wagon for sure! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice wagon Sam
Thanks a lot Nick! :D
I have to say that I prefer OO gauge in general as it takes a lot less space and price is more affordable. As such I don't have much interrest in O gauge. However, O gauge is a lot better for details then OO gauge.
Yes those are definitely advantages of OO - good point! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
